    I've been working on my pond for a couple years now and it's looking great. I recommend, if you can, cutting back as many trees as possible from the ponds edge to reduce the amount of leaves that enter the pond each fall adding excess nutrients to the pond and also making the beneficial bacteria treatments more effective.

    Doc, I really enjoyed this video. As a teen, we lived on a 3-4 acre residential pond. My Dad was one of the three neighborhood men that took care of the lake. They fought many of the same battles as do you. I remember one year they drained the lake. That was a lot of fun for the kids seining fish out of the deeper pools. They drained it to put lime on the bottom. One day I looked out into the lake bed and down at the dam, my Dad had a bulk load of lime in the back of his white 1964 Ford Pickup spreading it with a shovel. He did the whole lake bed that way. When they filled the lake again, him and his buddies rowed bag after bag of fertilizer out onto the lake and spread them throughout the lake. They probably did more, this is what I recall. He said the lime would keep the bottom firm and the fertilizer would keep the lake green so the algae and "seaweed" would not take over. Afterwords, they had it stocked with small mouth bass, bream, and silver channel cats. You talk about a fun fish to catch, those catfish would weigh from four-to-six pounds after a year or two. You get out there early in the morning when its cool and catch one or two those. Man they put up a good fight! One year some kids dumped a few crappies into the lake that were caught elsewhere. MAN! He was mad, exclaiming, "crappie will eat the other fish's [bass or bream] eggs!" Finally, we had to remove several tall pines off the dam for the same reason, "when the trees die, they leave holes in your dam." Doc, you have a dammed good time out there and best of luck. Keep us posted.

    Help please I am trying to find out what type of grass I have. I live in Ohio
    During the season it’s thick and green. So thick no weeds grow in it. In the fall it turns brown and it will stay brown until the weather warms up. I have had someone tell me it’s centipede someone said it’s “Florida grass”.
    It has some runners I have photos but don’t know how to put them up.

    We do everything you’re recommending after finding many variegated pond weeds and under invasive grasses. We have issues with backfilling for our overflow that is eventually connected to a farm tile.

      With killlers like copper sulfate you do part of the pond per label instruction. Dye is dye, just add it. If you have aeration, use it when killing the algae and muck because those products deplete the available oxygen for the wildlife in the water.

      Alligator snapping turtles are not endangered. They are endemic to ponds and rivers in the U.S. They live to be about 45 years old in the wild and have been known to severe people's fingers with their strong bite.
      If you trap and release squirrels far from your house, you are killing them. They are very territorial and other squirrels will attack them and they will die of starvation or from predators.

      No but it will reduce the light if the pond is heavy in the algae. But that's the job of the dye. Reduce the light as algae needs sunlight to live.

    Hi Doc...(from Michigan)
    Question. Our one acre pond is always so clear after WINTER come April. Then, June thru November is cloudy.
    Does this sound like a Plankton type algae that's treatable with Copper Sulfate like "Cutrine Plus"??
    Directions say .6 of a gallon for a One Acre pond. Does that jive with the amount you use on your pond?
    Also, HOW OFTEN DO YOU REAPPLY?
    Thanks Doc for any word.

    Does the fountains bring cold water from below and warm the pond

    • @JamesBrown-fd1nv
      @JamesBrown-fd1nv 6 месяцев назад

      Fountains are floating and suck water from the top few feet of the pond. Aerators that sit on bases just above the bottom help mix the thermocline. A thermocline (also known as the thermal layer or the metalimnion in lakes) is a distinct layer based on temperature within a large body of fluid (e.g. water, as in an ocean or lake; or air, e.g. an atmosphere) with a high gradient of distinct temperature differences associated with depth.
      Aeration is much better if you must choose one or the other because this allows the fish access to more of the pond and it increases oxygen from the water adjitation.

  • @garysteffen8113
    @garysteffen8113 Год назад

    When you started aeration, did you start slowing. I've seen horror stories of fish kills when starting aeration.

    • @JamesBrown-fd1nv
      @JamesBrown-fd1nv 6 месяцев назад

      I don't see how aeration can kill anything, it is just air passing through air stones like you see in an aquarium.

    • @casman9635
      @casman9635 6 месяцев назад

      @@JamesBrown-fd1nvIt will kill your fish if you install it and then run it continuously. You have to gradually increase it day by day. The older the pond, the more careful you need to be. Rule of thumb is start at 30 mins day one, 1hr day two, 2hr day three, and doubling until continuous use. Google can explain better. But yes, it will kill your fish.

    • @Smoshylife
      @Smoshylife 4 месяца назад +1

      @@JamesBrown-fd1nvaerators bring up ammonia to the surface that was settled at the bottom due to density differences. So you shouldn’t just stick an aerator in and call it a day. You gotta slowly over time run it for longer and longer periods until you reach 24/7
