    This is an Ebay purchased Atari 2600 with missing colour fault so we take a look at the service guide to restore colour and then replace the power regulator, large cap and the connection between the main board and switch board. I clean up the case following the excellent video from Neil and Mark over at RMC, they go into more details of the cleaning process.
    • Restoration of a Bucke...
    I then try to fit an S-Video mod, make a mess of that, fix the actual mod board and try again. Have problems with the 1084S RCA sockets off camera and eventually get it all working.
    The S-Video mod on ebay has sold out and the seller is no longer listing any items.

      it does have two custom chips that are quite complicated, no video ram and no on board rom so missing features the other would have. When you think this was one of the first it's a very good design and actually very clever design for video.

    I see this has a few thumbs down compared to my other videos, if you did dislike what part of this video don't you like, this would help me for future videos. My channel is very mixed and I said this from the start, so programming, retro restorations, 3d printing and kit builds, basically all the stuff I do at my workshop, If you do not like any of these topics just watch something else.

    Great video! I ran into a similar issue a few months back on an Atari heavy sixer.
    As usual I also followed the service manual flow chart with no success. I found an amendment page that spoke of the crystal that controls the TIA chip. Sure enough that was the culprit. That was a first for me.

    I commend you on programming your logo to display on the 2600. I have the same model and when one of the foam dust protector discs crumbled in my fingers I wondered where to get new ones, but apparently the answer is to laser-cut your own :D Also Decathalon is a great game but unfortunately playing it ends up destroying elderly joysticks.

      I used 8bit workshop and after trying to code the logo myself I found it had a built in graphic conversion tool. While learning a bit about how to program the 2600 I have nothing but respect for anyone who wrote games for the system no matter how rubbish.

      @@GazMarshall Programming the 2600 is hard and you really need to know how to squeeze every cycle out of the 6502. I think it was Ben Heck that talked about seeing the black lines on the side of Space Invaders was due to the code taking longer than the blank section of the tv signal.

  • @Hologhoul
    @Hologhoul Год назад

    My VCS goes into a modern TV and most colours look sharp and solid, but a few, such as some greens and especially grey, are kind of flickery like they have their own little snowstorm going on. Wiggling the cable near the TV input made a slight difference so I tried a new aerial cable, only for that to result in a totally poor picture with weird white spots in a grid-like pattern and nothing solid at all (not sure if new cable is faulty?) It's the same with a second TV, an old LCD - identical colour issues. Does this point to any particular capacitor or can both these (quite different but non-CRT) tellies be the reason, rather than a console fault?

    • @leesmithsworkshop
      @leesmithsworkshop  Год назад

      any new tv will have to convert the analogue signal to digital so it depends how good the timing signals are from the VCS compared to the tv. you could try adjusting the colour pot and tuning to one tv, but I can't really offer a fix, this is the only atari I worked on so I am not an expert in these matters.

      @@leesmithsworkshop Thanks for your thoughts, I will try a few more things, maybe I can source a CRT to test, or a second VCS/2600. It's not a big problem, just an irritant!
