Asmon is right, Blizzard should add a group-board. Like how Monster Hunter has it: a physical thing in game you walk up to and interact with that brings up a list of groups you can join. And each one can have a description in the listing so you know what the goal of the group is gonna be.

We never shipped to the north to fight arthas because we where fighting things in the old world(maybe the LK’s undead and protecting the city’s). What I would envision for a world PvP zone is the following: A tug of war with a lot of towns between two capital cities. The towns will have PvE quests, the cities will have the PvP quests to take over the towns. Additionally the fewer towns one side posses the easier it is for the 'losing side' to build up PvE forces to send counter attacks to push back. So as an example if one side has zero towns, they'll have PvE quests to build up an NPC army to push the other faction potentially all the way back to the other city for a brief moment (allowing them access to the PvE quests in those towns for a short period).
Done cleverly the PvP zone could act as a gold sink if the PvE quests use crafting materials or crafted items as turn ins: Players building armor and weapons for the NPCs to fight with.
To break things up a 3rd NPC faction could occasionally lay siege to all of the towns, basically resetting things back to zero now and then.

By far, the best experience I've ever had in classic (that's by the way, not there in retail at fucking all) is teaming up with a random player in the open world to do a difficult quest together somewhere in the middle of who knows fucking where. That shit feels like an actual adventure, immense fun.
They succeeded on that in SoD with certain runes that required you to climb a tower with elites in the middle of an opposite faction zone with no flight masters.
Whispering randoms from /who that were attempting the same thing and going on an adventure together with them, fighting off alliance players and strategizing on how to get to the top of the tower together, inviting a third guy, coming up with solutions and emerging successful at the end. That was the best shit ever, I loved it. I want more of that. Maybe, introduce more elite hard quests that require you to go far away from the nearest flight master. Quests that yield something important other than xp, something desirable. Incentivise players teaming up with each other out in the open world to go on an adventure together. That's important. That's what RPG's are all about, aren't they? Nothing comes close to experiencing things like that in this game.
Classic had that, SoD devs noticed it and further improved on it successfully, huge props to them for it. Legends. I hope to see even more of it down the line.

I have two new friends who've never played wow before. We are playing classic. You really only need like two add-ons. The mechanics are less complicated for beginners. There is not as much bloat with tons and tons of spells and moves and the rotations are a bit more simplistic. As long as you install the add-on that shows you the quest markers and turn in points it's pretty beginner friendly.

I know not everyone will agree, but to me that is the quintessential world pvp experience, followed 2nd by organizing big city raids and battling with the opposing faction in the heart of their city

By teaming with the right classes in the BGs, you could really steamroll people and help secure the win. There was a fair amount of strategy, and not everyone in the PVP group needed to be on the same page. I played in the beta, and until I realized Mythic had given up on it. Think Wintergraps was the closest to an engaging pvp event. The vehicles and attack defence style forces people to engage. Any style that allows both attack and defence ultimately will fail because the min maxing nature of players just breaks it within a week. But if they find a way to have a perpetual attack and defend style zone that would be the holygrail but I think that’s impossible, people will always find ways to cheese.

BRD Should be a 20 man raid, but it should be tuned as an enormous 5 man dungeon. What I mean is you only need a 5 man group to do everything in the raid up to the bar, but you attach a super tight time limit to reaching the bar before security shuts the city down. So you enter the raid with 4 groups, and each group has to complete one section of the early part of the dungeon then get to the bar with their macguffin for going further in. Like 1 group hits the prison (bosses 2-5), 1 group hits the armory (bosses 6, 12, 13, 14), 1 group clears the caverns (bosses 1, 7, 10, 11), and 1 group clears the trade area (8, 9, 15). In ancient times, around 45-50 people was the max number of people that could typically group together for a common goal and achieve it without a loss of efficiency. Coincidentally, a few studies were done showing this is also the maximum amount of people you can have in a WoW raid before the effort loses a certain amount of coherency. Beating a 40 (or hell, perhaps even 50 man) raid at-level is literally a max-level exercise in a groups ability to achieve a common goal as well as a raid leader's ability to lead that group.

Here is an idea: when you enter a pvp zone like STV (not all pvp flagged areas) have a notice that pops up asking if you want to participate in world pvp event, if you select yes your position is displayed on the map and you have a bounty assigned to you. the more you kill or the higher rank you are the more you are worth to enemies. Also if you join this as a party it will display your party size. This then balances it out for the people who are going there for the pvp event and people who are going there for questing. Separate rewards for this should be made available and max party size is set to 5. This is easy to implement I think but also gives a great twist on how we can integrate world pvp without a dedicated BG. consideration: how interaction between people who select yes and people who select no - possible to kill people who are not participating in the event but zero reward so less reason to do it, I dunno just throwing that out there

  • @dieselp87
    @dieselp87 8 месяцев назад +3

@3:18 While PvP was a grind in classic, you have to be aware of what it achieved.
It was an alternative way of getting gear for solo players and small groups.
If you wanted to have the good gear, you needed to have a guild and play in a fixed schedule.
PvP allowed you to work towards good gear aswell without the need to rely on other players.
That was the core difference back in the day and why you'd do one over the other. That changed with TBC of course, when gear started to get more divided in general.
Raiding with random people was just not that common for most people back then, because you didn't want to rely on them.
These days, the biggest problem is that everything is too accessible for everyone. It's easy to get into a raid, even when you don't know anybody. And because of that, raiding is simply the most effective way of getting equipment. You don't have to raid with a guild for 3-4 weeks before being considered a "regular" that's allowed to get loot. There's no social effort anymore that would replace the grinding effort of PvP. The community optimized all the social requirements out of raiding.
PvP was supposed to fill exactly that role. You fight among a lot of strangers for a common goal. You didn't have to wait for anybody and you could do it whenever you wanted. That was the unique aspect of PvP. Of course it has some other perks, but this was the main divider for most people.
So the solution to the problem is not really trying to "fix" PvP, but rather to adjust PvE to make it more exclusive again.
PvE is too easy, when you can get any random group of 40 people together and are guarantueed to kill all the bosses after 2-4 hours.
The true "classic experience" also involves wiping on Kael'Thas for 2-3 months with the same people without any real gain... just to potentially get to Hyjal eventually.
Having a guild was the most optimal way of getting to that content (and gear) at the time. Also because of how many "bad" players existed back then. If you were accepted into a guild after multiple test raids, it meant you were good enough for a raid (which is funny to think about these days)
If you want PvP to have a place in WoW, you need to change PvE.
Adjust PvE to the point, where being in a guild is the most optimal way to progress:
    * Make fights harder
    * Make fights require more communication
    * Reward players for sticking together for multiple raids

Having some sort of faction wide buff that you get from "controlling" territory would be a cool way to incentivize pvp. It doesn't have to be a crazy buff even, just like +20% swim speed or something.
A buff that would be fun to have, but wouldn't swing faction balance one way or another on a server.

Asmon has talked about dead server issues many times, instead of trying to make some complex system to allow cross-server raids just make server transfers free with a 1 month timer. People shouldn't be punished for playing on a dead server, they shouldnt be punished for wanting to move to a server with a new/old friend, its just insanely unhealthy for the long-term health of the game. I'm almost certain they would make more money in continued subscriptions over server xfers. I know blizzard wants to sell everyone the solution to their game's problems but if enough people beat the drum in unison on this issue I think they could make it happen. It would still preserve all of the benefits of a server community while not locking people out of the game for picking the wrong server.

If they moved the objective around people would just zerg it in raids. But if people in the zone got 1 of 10 objectives to do we would see alot more "natural" world pvp as the ran to the objective and less congestion in one area

I think ideally every raid/dungeon should have something that never becomes obsolete, so that even max tier characters have a reason to return. For these people it will be much easier, but because of that they will be more inclined to bring on lower tier people without too much hassle. I think of it as a dynamic way for new players to (or players that came later)progress faster to the latest tiers without having to do hard resets.
I don't have the solution on how to implement this, but I am very fond of this idea that every character/player more or less gets a fulfilled journey through the world and not skipping too much content that is actually cool, but not played because min/max and new content made it obsolete.

Real Guilds (the majority) trying to roster 40 players every week for months is a nightmare. That shit sucked in 2019 & sucks now. Nope, no shot. I'm out when that becomes a thing again. Make all level 60 raids 20-25 man or it is over. Classic + (this is a beta test for) max raid size should be 15-20. Less is more in this case.

I understand they wanted to make other professions have a reason to be picked up but in reality it just means you need a miner/gatherer alt so you can have engi+armor crafting on your main. If anyone's interested, the reason I'm using a Fishing Pole as a weapon on rogue is the poison rune and the fact classic poles are oddly OP in some aspects. Your 'attack rating' with fishing poles as a weapon is directly your fishing profession level, including baubles/bait and other fishing bonuses. A level 10 character can have up to 230 AR when level 25s have about 125 AR. Also for every 100 fishing, you gain 4% crit with a pole equipped. Hoping future runes are usable without a melee weapon requirement.

4:49 You're totally right about designing for an intrinsically exciting experience. Rewards are at their best when they are a ~reflection~ of the player you are, of the gameplay, and opening up new gameplay. They're just a way to show the player, and to show others, who you have become as a player. Getting that BiS raid or PvP gear is exciting because it means you're a BiS level player.
So what about PvP itself is fun? I enjoy the process of mastering my class, of applying my knowledge, of reacting quickly, communicating, etc. Having rewards that mark and measure that progress based on how much I do that is totally fine. The issue people are having isn't so much the reward system, it's their own reasons for doing it. They aren't really pursuing the top gear, they are pursuing the success and prestige of being the best. If the motivation is to be the best, having a gear system based on rank or rating is a perfect match to that. Whatever the reward system is, they will pursue it at the cost of their own enjoyment to get to the top and show other people they are the best. It's the players that aren't intrinsically motivated to do PvP -- they are doing it to get to the top, not to enjoy the fight itself. They depend on winning and losing to have their fun. "The grind" is the same thing on a bigger scale.
To solve this you have to rethink your reason to do PvP fundamentally. Can you really take the "beating other people as the goal" out of PvP? I think anyone who continues to enjoy it realizes it's more about those moments during match. It's those clutch plays where you took your gameplay to a new level, especially in comms with your friends. How then, can rewards reflect these experiences, instead of the outcome of many victories? I think ideally, the rewards of gameplay is actually more gameplay. Instead of thinking of rewards as badges that measure you compared to other players, think of them as ways to unlock new and bigger ways of doing more cool shit. Maybe could unlock new talents and talent points and have ongoing character progress that way. Maybe a certain amount of victories unlocks a new PvP event with RP significance. Whatever rewards mean "more of the ~experience~ of PvP" and just don't give out rewards based on being at the top of some kind of ladder.
Nothing wrong with pursuing the top of a ladder. If that's what you want and you're still struggling, then the simple solution is that you need to enjoy your own progress and improvement rather than the outcome of it.

The best pvp system in my opinion was isle of quel'danas dailies, where a money insentive of farming dailies put hordes and alliance in the same zone fighting for mob tags. I dont like pvp insentives above fighting for mob tags because it insentives grinding or griefing, and while mob tags do the same it does so in a rather limited degree shaped by the requirements of the quest.
Farming honer for gear was never a system i liked personally, however the arena gearing system i found to be rather good, aswell as farming certain items from pve to mix with your pvp gear I found to be an interesting dynamic.
In my opinion honor should be completely removed and instead economically insentives throught dailies, and competetion for these dailies should drive player competition, pvp gear should be optained through Arena (if it is a part of the expansion), raids and quests.
in a perfect world these dailies or whatever time locked limits blizzard desides to put on these economical insentives should be a more lucrative than grinding gold in any other way, which could be done by nerfing the economical gain from mobs.

Like good for you go play another game and cancel your subscription till phase 2.
Also for stv, bounty system, Ear collection, sell them for gold or redeem for gear/consumables, incentivizes pvp for pretty much everyone, cap gold to like 20-40 gold a week so you don't have bots just farming eachother for gold.

I understand the why Bilz thinks they should have catch up dungeons or raids in classic. The player base gate keeps based on gear and if you don't have the gear needed for the raid you can't get into a group.

I think Vanilla players wouldn't mind hard content, one of the biggest criticism for retail was the fact that open world and dungeon difficulty was a joke, there was no need for CC and everything was just a steamroll with tanks pulling multiple packs of mobs for aoe. It was brain dead content.

Asmongold: Raiding is stupid. Also the game is easy. One-shot mechanics that one-shot people and groups are stupid and easy and bad
Also Asmongold: Naxx was a guildbreaker because it was so hard. It was hard because of bosses like Thadd with punishing mechanics. I love that. I love that design. That's good design and I'd like to see more of that design

You clear Uldaman in a time frame, and then you go to Uldum and kill a singular boss where the platinum disc quest leads you. Drops fat loot obv.

I reckon this is the TRUE beginning for the end of WoW, I reckon Season of Discovery will be the TRUE beginning of the end.
P.S. - I like and play SoD but I still can't shake this eerie thought...Like we shouldn't be here, we shouldn't be doing this....

I'd bet, Seaon of Discovery does so well that it starts at 8 phases and extends to something like a 10-12 phases.

They should incentivize it by consummables, something that can be used up unlike gear. That would make it perpetually valuable.

He likes 40 man raid ls because he masterloots all gear to himself which means he gets more chances per week of what he wants dropping

How would 20 lvl 60 phases work without massive power scaling issues

My one and only complaint so far is the resilience helm in WSG. It's like they're testing the waters for resilience gear. That helm now makes all other helms irrelevant for WSG. Even at 60, the best helm you can get in a raid wont compete with that helm in WSG. I quit because of resilience, and I will quit again if they put it in classic.
