    I would clean out the existing chicken coop. Already existing and easy to clean out. Also, they would be safe from predators. Just need an outside fencing area, for them to come out and enjoy the sun.

    oh Dave… I used to love messing about in the old sheds on the farm when I was a child. Memories are flooding back⭐️
    I love this idea of the cask as a hen house, but you will need to have good access to the inside to be able to keep it clean. Yes for nesting boxes too but you have a big space to keep clean in there.. maybe the nest boxes on the back and you actually put a full door on the front.
    Your little hole can stay in the door, but you just need access.
    Now as to the residue in the bottom of the barrel, it’s just dehydrated wine and all you need to do is add it to water, strain and bottle it and you have your first vintage…
    🤣🤪🤣🤪🤣🦘🦘

    When I watch the video, you can clean out the old hen house and keep the chickens there, great place for them there and easier for you to clean the hen house, you can fit many hens there, put up some perches for them and the nest has you already there😊👍

  • @darbylongoria8737
    @darbylongoria8737 2 дня назад +6

    To far from your house. You have to go feed them every day. It's really wet there. Put them in the small pen in the barn, and move the boxes in there. It's dry, and you're only using it for dry boards. Less work and a much safer place for them. Easy to clean also.

    • @escapetothequinta
      @escapetothequinta  2 дня назад +1

      The barn is just as far away. I think I may build a roof over the whole thing so they have a roof too. I don't want them too close as I dont want to smell them haha. Luckily I go up there every morning to get an orange and I can't wait to spend time with them and hopefully long term it'll be closer to the main house. Do you have any recommendations for trees I can grow in the fenced area for them. Thanks for watching 🤗🤗🤗

    You could use the smaller barrel as a nesting box. Cut it in half, length ways and add some shelves. Maybe add it across the back so you can cut a hole in the back so they can get in and out. You could put a a hinge and fastener on the top half so you can get into it for the eggs. Just a thought.

  • @maregrobler1960
    @maregrobler1960 2 дня назад +5

    Please remember chickens need 12 hour of light to lay eggs. I think your barrel will be too dark. quinta de Jara also said that chickens do not like darkness. Maybe you can watch Baileys Homestead before you start with your coop. I agree you must use what you,ve got. Granny South Africa❤

    • @escapetothequinta

      They will have a whole fenced area they won't stay just in the barrell that's just from dusk until dawn like all other coops there outside area will be about 40m2 and then I will also let them free range 🤗🤗🤗

    That room in the barn is already set up for the chickens, even has the nesting boxes. Just clean out the mess that you’ve just left everywhere. That cleanup should be number one!! The wine barrel needs the whole top off and even then not enough room for more than 2-3 birds nowhere for them to nest at all

    I would recommend to put the chicken coop at the other end of your orchard. Because that corner is too far away from the house, which is more inviting for predators and more walking for you.

    Please don’t use the wine barrel. You need a structure that you can get into to clear the chicken poop. There’s plenty of wood lying around to build a nice little rustic chicken cottage or use the existing or. Ut just needs a clean.

    • @escapetothequinta
      @escapetothequinta  2 дня назад

      The plan is to make a big door in the back which hinges open so I can scrap any mess into a bucket if that makes sense. It's one of those projects where there is definitely an easier option but I need to work around the obstacles of the barrel and I'm sure we can make it work especially with all the advice from good people like you. I don't know if you already have this stuff worked out, but some ideas for "furnishing" the chicken coop from things found in the barn:
    - Would the kegs/small barrels seen to the left of the coop-barrel ruclips.net/video/TUxhJZvWDV0/видео.htmlsi=G6Ibsh3uE21ZJa5e&t=80 serve as nesting boxes if cut in half?
    - Right about ruclips.net/video/TUxhJZvWDV0/видео.htmlsi=8e_WXuX9mpE1vaDR&t=470, there's a little bent wooden thing with rungs that might make a good chicken ladder for them to get in & out of the coop/barrel ("coop-errel"? 🤣)
    - if the chair behind the water pump gubbins at ruclips.net/video/TUxhJZvWDV0/видео.htmlsi=5Mw2j-4pi13_k0zK&t=680 seems like it might not be useful as a chair anymore; but, turned on its front like that, it might make a fun perching structure/jungle gym in the chicken yard.

    Agree with others. Too small and too dark for chickens. Besides you will not be able to accommodate more than 2 or 3. Too close to your neighbors. You have to respect their space and the noise they make. You have tons of land. I suggest you build between old house and new dwelling so when you move from one place to another it will be close to both. Check the ordinance. And forecast for free range and building a much bigger space. You already have the nesting boxes. Just cut one layer. Sorry for the long comment but as I am passionate about my chickens you need to accommodate their needs. Lots of love from Florida.

    • @escapetothequinta
      @escapetothequinta  2 дня назад +1

      Really appreciate the comment but I don't understand when you say too dark for chickens, I am going to add some holes with mesh for airflow and they will be let out into a huge area every morning. Every coop I've seen is a small wooden structure am I missing something? Also luckily the house next door is abandoned and is only used for storage for the orchard next door so that's one less problem haha. I'm building a the coop where it is because I want it to be close to where I will eventually be living and by the pond I will be digging but please any suggestions send them across. If you are on Instagram send me a picture of your setup I would love to see it 😀
