Electric cars companies are lying to you: their products aren't even close to being zero emissions. But hey, aren't these new "environmentally friendly" vehicles supposed to help us save the planet? Well, I'm not so sure.
Of course, in many ways electric cars are better than gasoline-powered ones. In most nations, an electric car puts out less carbon than a gas car per mile or kilometre. But most of the time, the carbon and cost to our planet of manufacturing electric cars and the waste they produce aren't factored in. And neither is the cost of human lives, especially in cobalt mining.
Of course, a lot of these facts are glossed over, or buried via PR and shady marketing tactics, just so that Telsla, and other electric car manufacturers can peddle the "zero emission" lie, in order to make a lot of money.

I bought a first generation Nissan Leaf in 2012. Great car. Saved me a fortune on gas, oil changes, etc. However, now, 10 years later, the battery has "worn" to the point that the range (which was only a fraction of a gasoline-powered vehicle to begin with) is now about 2/3 of what it was new. As the car has aged, I've found more and more places that I'm afraid to go. Range anxiety is not only a factor at initial purchase, it's a cancer that steadily gets worse as the car ages. So why not replace the batteries? The current estimate for new batteries for my Leaf is about $7500. Not only is this more than the value of the car, it more than offsets ALL of the savings during the last 10 years.

Additionally, saying that batteries will need to be replaced after 100k miles or anything close to that is bs and old news. New EVs will be outlived by their batteries. Also batteries are incredibly easy to recycle, at least compared to mining and refining all that material instead. EVs are the future and have been proven to be a lot more environmentally friendly than ICE cars. Is walking, biking and public transportation even more environmentally friendly? Totally. If you need to buy a new car, however, EVs are definitely the way to go. This video just seemed like she already came to the conclusion and then researched a couple of points to discredit EVs. How clean is the grid where you live. Best case scenario you have solar panels and a power wall, worst case you live in West Virginia that relies on coal. These things are undeniable. An electric vehicle has very very few moving parts. It does not rely on igniting a fuel for energy. There is far less heat and no exhaust. It does not rely on nearly as many fluids to keep it functioning reliably. There are so many things that can go wrong in an internal combustion engine. They are amazing in their complexity. They are also totally unnecessary. Most electric vehicles do not even have a transmission. There is little reason that an electric motor can run a million miles. the original Hummer H1 emits a whopping 889 grams of CO2 per mile. That's more than double compared to the EV version. Let's compare a huge truck 9 ton hummer EV against a sedan and not the old Hummer. It's a 60% reduction

  • @jsleeorl
    @jsleeorl Год назад +4

You are absolutely right saying electricity is not green. However, there is no better alternative currently. Fuel cell, hydrogen is very hard to distribute, and the cost of a charging station is prohibitively expensive. You can generate hydrogen ok, but to store enough of it, it has to be highly pressurized into very strong storage, not to mention hydrogen in gas form leaks very easily. In many Asian countries they do have LNG charging stations, but adding hydrogen storage is not trivial. EV is an interim solution to earn some time before a better solution becomes available. Green or blue(?) liquified hydrogen is also not entirely green because it's a byproduct of oil production. The only way to save Earth from overheating is a drastic reduction in human activities if it's not already too late. Building massive amounts of nuclear power plants everywhere, which they are seriously considering. Or nuclear fusion becomes commercial-ready. Why do you think that Elon or Jeff invest so much money in a maned spaceship for years without profit? It might have been their backup plan but now looks more like the only plan.

Please don't stop at this very superficial analysis.
And do remember that petrol doesn't come out of the ground magically without any environmental damage, production of diesel/petrol cars is not free of emissions either, and most of all, the fact we produce energy from petrol now does not mean we will do so tomorrow.
Also slavery is NOT necessary to produce cobalt, we can change that.
And losing a third of the range on your car does NOT mean that you MUST suddenly throw your batteries away.
The fact the batteries are not fully design to be recycled now does NOT mean they won't be in the future.
And no one ever said "electric cars will save the world".
What we know is that we MUST stop using fossil fuels or we WILL be fucked.

This argument I have heard from so many other people. In my case when I decide to go electric it would have nothing to do at all environmental concerns. Don't get me wrong I think anybody with common sence would agree that we always should do more to have a cleaner environment. To me the idea of not having to go ever again to a gas station (other than do a chaging stop or get a snack) appeals to me, lower maintanece cost and charging at home with solar or power grid. But at the same time I belive that if we did our part as individuals we could be much more effective for the environment and other areas than we realize. And all doing actions at our own level and of course the actions of the energy sector and goverment. But the energy sector and goverment are entities that are out of my immediate control, so any little control I have is located at my level in my personal life and within my personal resposanbility also my fellow neighbor which it coud be done for example with me not supporting certain products, voting against certain laws, policies and even changin my own personal habits etc. But back to the subject of the video, it would be not eve of me not to think that with humans there is always the posibility of the "evil self gratification" over the good of man kind. Lets be honest, the greater the power a single human gets the greater the temptation would be. Is in our nature. We all need good guard rails for that reason. But at the same time we cannot assume everyone has an "evil" agenda until they show their true colors with what they do with that power. This subject has so many fast moving parts and so many people involved that is hard to trully make any judgment as to what to make of it. We are yet to realize how society and its effects would look like in the next few dacades. As we all see, things seem to be moving towards the electrification of cars and the fate of the gas cars seem to be going in the same direction as photo film industry went through when the digital photography took over gradually weather we wanted it or not as one example. This and many other arguments could take us into and endless waitsful rabbit hole....Do people that currently have an electric car care about where the electricity comes from now? If they do, how would they trully insure the electricity at charging station comes from renewal sources? If there was a way to know, would they have to skip many charging stations and risk been stranded? Would we stop buying an electric car because we can never know where the electricity come from at different locations? Should we scrap the whole electric car idea and stick to gas then? We can go on and on waisting our own sanity. Any significant change in human endeavor demands sacrifice, otherwise is not a real sacrifice. Let's also be vigilant of what is happening around us of course. As in anything in this life, are there going to be challenges? YES! Is there going to be people taking advantage of others? YES! since people exited, should we stop doing everthing because it rains or a disaster visited us? NO! Let's pick our own battles wisely at our level , don't sweat the small stuff, and lets take responsability for our own actions and take good care of youself, your loves ones and your neighbor as yourself. What would this world would looked like if we all made even a small effort to focus on that........?

While the greater parts of the EV industry is strict in getting their resources from as ethical sources as possible, those who make rechargeable electric and electronic gadgets do not follow such an ethical philosophy for their production. So if the creation of battery packs and the use of child labor is something that really concerns you, doing something about the lifespan of your cell phones, laptops and rechargeable tools and gadgets should be top priority - and trying to cut down on as many of them as possible something you should invest time and effort in.

I love petrol vehicles. The ICE is a masterpiece of engineering for its time. I was raised by a mechanic/farmer. Some of my earliest memories are of going to the Cummins shop to visit my dad working on 18 wheelers. Every time I smell diesel, I remember. But I also love electric vehicles. I even build them now. They're so much fun to drive, and I love charging up at home at my convenience instead of going out of my way to visit a gas pump every other day. They're as convenient as a cordless tool, which I also appreciate as much as my petrol equipment and hand tools. The fuel savings are enormous - 22¢/kWh vs 66¢/kWh for gas (currently) after eff is accounted for. I LOVE it. I have 5 now, but only because I build my own for a fraction of the cost. I couldn't afford to buy a Tesla or any new car for that matter LOL. But I don't see why it's got to be one or the other unless a person's being an overzealous partisan twit flirting with authoritarianism. When I got involved in building ev's and re in general, I was being influenced by my conservative and libertarian peers - the prepper type. We had loads of fun building lots of different things to help us live as independent from big brother and the increasingly 'subscriber based' corporate world as we could. But when liberals started preaching more about it and co-opted the tech as a partisan patch for their virtue signaling, the right immediately hated everything about it. I've since lost most conservative friends to the madness because I choose to be one of those 'fence sitting' centrists who pisses everyone off no matter what he does. It's ridiculous. Tribal thinking isn't going to help us at this point. Never has, never will. That should be obvious to any sober person. The reality is that the transition that the (far) left want/expect isn't going to happen overnight. Not even in their lifetime. It took over a century for much harder and more dedicated people to develop this world with fossil fuels. If the left wants to run solely on renewables and only drive ev's, then have at it. But they need to get off their butts and soap boxes and get their useless hands dirty actually building what they want instead of whining at the rest of us to provide it for nothing.

ok fine, but the reality is petrol powered cars can't be used forever. The amount of energy to pull crude from the waning reserves increases every year, and the amount is finite. The major point of what she sidesteps is the environmental impact depends on the grid that powers them. As she mentions, in countries where their power grid is most geothermal/solar/wind, it completely makes sense to have electric cars. That is the model we have to push towards, and it will take some time, but it will happen, largely out of necessity. What she is saying about the junking cost is also only partly correct, most cars when scrapped rust away in junkyards. Visit one sometime.
I like this channel but she often only leans on the negative aspects of things without offering any real solution. Again, the reality is our world as it is right now and for the foreseeable future relies on vehicles. Pushing towards a renewable based energy grid powering electric vehicles is the best option for the near and medium term future. Period. When people make money off this, its not a conspiracy, its called opportunistic capitalism, and is also with us to stay.

However, they have improved enough recently that it now makes sense to use cobalt-free batteries in lower-end and shorter-range vehicles. It also frees up the production of battery cells with other, more energy-dense chemistries to produce more longer-range vehicles.

But people in cities have neither of those luxuries. And the ideal use of an EV is in a city : higher fuel efficiency, range being less of an issue and cleaner air (locally).

You may make a video on the whole truth of cobalt. This element is also used as a catalyst in refineries of crude oil for example. A next fact is the cobalt is used less and less in batteries with the goal of eliminating it completely.
Than the problem is not using the cobalt in batteries, but the companies running the mines. This is the same for coffee, cacao, thee, textiles, clothing and many other products.
The solution is not in buying an electric car or not. It's in changing our whole society, which is unfortunately an utopia. But hopefully with 'little" steps we can improve the world....

    It's not a scam.
It's new technology that will only get better as time goes on.
The only reason we are having all the new battery breakthrus are probably cuz of the emergence of EVs and Green energy.
Batteries were considered enough and barely worth iterating on because they had enough juice to last for 1-2 days in our phones and we were content with that.
Now batteries are getting better and better, new concepts are emerging.
If we get to a point where we can store a fuckton of solar etc.. EVs will still not be zero emission however... they will be a fuckton lot better than any fossil fuel car.
    It just takes time.
We also can't depend on fossil fuels... they are bound to run out quite soon. And then our next alternative will be fossil fuels made by humans, which is currently expensive but guess what? it will be worth it once we ran out of alternatives. and as techniques get better prices would fall to make profit on scale.
Also if anything cars are a scam not by design.
The repair shops will do stuff to your car to see you as often as they can. The car manufacturers will design stuff to break instead of making things last as long as they can..
For many things the problem starts with humans and their greed. They will do anything to make money.
    Life sucks that way..

How would you retro fit a car from the early seventies with modern electronics? How would you update that styling? The safety features? People care about that as well. Finally, people want a competitive price. How much would it cost to make a car last that long? Deloreans were stainless steel and quite expensive because of it. Having done a fair bit of research in to the recyclability of EV batteries, I can't agree with your statement that they're not built for recycling. The plan is to make the EV battery industry self sufficient in component materials through recycling. Further, there was no mention of the significant efforts to remove cobalt from the battery chemistry. The widespread use of LFP batteries obviates the need for any cobalt in them - BYD uses LFP exclusively in its vehicles and Tesla is using it in about 52% of its vehicles. LFP batteries also last much longer than NMC/NMCA batteries - estimated to last for about 1M km. So they'll probably outlast the car!
Agreed that it takes around 60,000km for an EV to "work off" it's production carbon cost.
Remember, many EV owners charge at home where they use the power from their solar system.

Any legacy auto not producing at least a million EVs by 2025 are dead. Among the brands/concerns all but guaranteed to die are GM, Stellantis, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Honda, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Renault.
The maybes of the old guard are VW, Ford, Volvo and Hyundai. Tesla and lots of unknown brands from China, like BYD, MG and XPeng will come at the legacy auto car makers like a pack of hungry wolves, and it's not going to be pretty.
The sooner the car industry stops with the ostrich tactics and start to face the problem, the better.

      It is strategic
America and its allies need to fight a big war in the next 5-20 years. If America looses the reserve currency the world tips. EVs are about having fuel left over to fight wars in the future. War is fought on oil not batteries

In New Zealand the goverment impose heavy tax on diessel motor utes, cars, trucks so that tax take can be given to encourage the battery car crew!! I have been told to fully charge a low batt tesla uses enough power as the average house in Howick, so if every house in Howick had a tesla the power supply to just this one suburb of Auckland would double.
To Double power supply overnight is crazy.
That cost would clearly be imposed on the battery clan you would think!!!
      Yeah right!!!
The costs would be every ones if you didnt want power outages.

If it's about pollution it's not wise to knowingly add something for which there is no solution to as of yet for disposal. It's incredible technology that needs more work in several key areas.

The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

One of the things I really don't like about Tesla is how expensive it is to get something like a body panel replaced. Meanwhile, my current car, a mitsubishi lancer, there is a warehouse 30 miles from my house and depending on the panel, takes a quick drive or they can have the part for pickup in a few days.

Corrupt unions build bridges to nowhere while corrupt politicians get reelected due to supporting said unions and besides local and state government leveraged vax passports if you want to ride the bus or subway in some areas. That's a dangerous precedent to set. Of course public transportation had obvious pluses in cities or suburbs.

The electric motor has 1 moving part. If you think nothing is wrong with the current system, then you just need to go to a city and breathe. The problem with current transportation is the cars and the people exist in the same space and cars emit poison. Energy storage is evolving, it is not what we do, it is how we do it. Electric vehicles are viable and necessary. I`m all for `fossil fuels` if used in the right context and location.

  • @y09i_

Non of these problems are specifically electric car problems. Choosing electric car, stove or heater etc. for new stuff is beneficial even today but most importantly in the long run because it is contributing to solving one major part of the emmisions problem. We always want new and better stuff. So, a Tesla owner can brag about being environmentally friendly because they could've bought a fossil sports car instead.

My second cousins had to escape to Kinshasa to stay with my Grandparents permanantly because my Mom's tribal farm and the house turned into an "Artisanal" mine(With no compensation might I add). Also, the organized guerrillas or crime groups nearly made them into slave miners. I thank God they escaped, but it makes my blood boil even more when the government is allowing this(even though it was expected) because they gain huge incentives for their own and their bureaucracy. I'm aiming to build my own territory and system from my company once I branch out from South Africa. I know it's hearsay and a pipedream, but when hearing the cries of your blood from a different nation and the cries of others who face the same thing as well other injustices(plus it is very hard for them to move forward in that environment), and at the same time knowing that there are other simple, yet robust alternatives to increase the standard of living and productivity from DRC's institutions, you may come up with crazy ideas to follow through.

Really ? Like what , shutting down hydro dams, decommisioning and not building new nuclear plants? How far are we from sustainable fusion reactors? Alot of towns cant even keep thier streets paved , how old are thier powerlines and substations. No offense , good optimism but for the vast majority of people forcing EV's too soon is a bad bad idea. 2035? A pipe dream. One day maybe well mine the moon for fuel for reactors . Id say 30yrs or so at current advancment. Your going to need a space elevator , fusion reactors running off new nuclear plants and a completely new grid for the entire united states to feed that many cars. Problem bieng ....not enough money to fund that . Or ....buy solar panels and a tesla wall. Then rent a gasoline powered car or fly if you actually want to idk go on vacation? This is political , and thier well aware and dont care what happens to you or me. Or the old lady that dies when her air conditioner wont turn on because the idiots on her street were forced to buy an EV and the substation is down for weeks .
