My Power miser 9 would not stay running...……Pilot would light, burner would come on but would shut off after approx. 15 seconds. I took the mesh filter off that was covering the vent holes in the base, vacuumed them and it fixed the problem !
Saved me a service call ! Thanks.

Hi, I am leaving this comment in case anyone else has one of these. Mine is 10 years old. IN my case it was not a blocked spark arrestor. I did remove the burner and blow it out with an air compressor from the top and it went from running only 3 minutes before shut off to a full heat cycle but later would die out. . No lint but seems maybe was pulling in some rust and dust from the lower section. It was either the thermocoupler or the over heat cut off switch. I ended up replacing the entire burner as just the assembly was only a $8 less on sears parts . The entire assembly is about $75 . Later I saw similar assemblies on line for less but not sure they would have fit. Same looking photo for different brand . I did not have the time to figure out what company or brands used the same part as the Kenmore Power Miser 9. BTW A.O. Smith, who I think is the maker of the parts, do say they expect the thermocoupler to last 10 years. They do have a web site to explain how to test but I did not have time. The pilot seems bigger and I blew through both and it seemed maybe the pilot was not as big as it needed to be? All I know know is now I have hot water a couple days in. Which part was failing I don't know. Oh and to rub it in, The Peizo spark failed after the new part was installed. How the thing failed was a mystery as I hardly ever used it in 10 years. Luckily there is a video on youtube how to use a $1 store lighter igniter. The actual part is only$8 but I was in a pinch and it worked . Odd how it failed the same time as the other part.

So now 11 months later the issue is returning. It seems to happen if one is low on hot water and uses it all up thus calling for a longer heat up . I now wonder if the old one was bad or if that dang screen is the issue or if the control valve is bad.

      @@Thatsmessedupman what happened?

@@jasonjohnson3424 the solution was to turn the main gas valve down just enough so that the pilot stays lit but doesn't blow it out. Full gas and when it shuts off with a woosh it was blowing out the pilot. It is still running.
