    Thanks for detailed description - showing the pilot light turning off - and pilot light turning back on. That’s really helpful. It’s the details that are super important - and now I have hot water agin.

    I now understand what someone feels like who has never held a gun. I was always afraid to even look at a water heater wrong for fear of it exploding, much less, playing with the controls like this man is doing.

    Also. I could not bend down to check the window if pilot light was lit - so I used my iPhone camera to view what was going on in that window - and that was really helpful. I got that trick from your video.

    If you couldn't find the pilot flame, then try again by looking the left side and right side of the water heater though that little glass door. My pilot flame is so small and located further on the right side and I missed it on 3 times by looking on the left side all the time. I was upset because my water heater is just only 2 years old; so after watching this video and read some comments and one comment emphasized about that, then I went back to do the same procedure and Bingo! I found the pilot flame which is located on the right side. Man, my water heater is alright and thanks for this video. I don't want to spend $900 again.

    a thank to you too....its probably a point to mention that you have to really look into the view opening to see the pilot light. because with the bradford white water heater i thought it wasnt lit for couple of tries because was cautious and looked planly into to sight. then i put an eye to the viewer and there was it. the small blue flame a little above.. .thx for your video

    I turned knob first off, then to pilot, pressed ignite but nothing happened in that lower window. My knob can’t be pressed down so maybe I’m missing a step, but I saw the window and took off that triangular cover easily. Yes GREAT VIDEO. Guess I’m almost there.

    • @michaelplunkett8059
      @michaelplunkett8059 10 месяцев назад

      You have to turn little knobs back to pilot first. THEN push it all the way down and hold it. After pilot lights you still have to hold down button for 1 minute to warm up the thermocouple. If released too soon, gas cuts off.
      THEN turn little knob to on.
      LASTLY, turn big thermostat knob so the 2 arrows line up. You will hear a whoosh and the main burner ring will light up through window. Close cover but don't pinch wires or copper thermocouple wire.

    Thank you, I'm going to try it. Looks pretty straightforward. It worked but there's a bit of a gassy smell around the water heater, is that normal

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  6 месяцев назад +1

      Were you holding the pilot button for a long time? Its fine if the smell was temporary but if you check again later and it still smells like gas, I would call out your gas company. They can do a gas leak search. (Usually this is a free service)

  • @leanne424

    Thanks! Very informative video. The pilot light goes out when letting go of the button after 30 seconds. The black intake screen is missing but I used a hand vac to try and clean that area. Tried the pilot light again. Guess we have to call for a repairman. At least now I know what else might be the problem. Should we buy a new water heater anyway since this one is maybe 15 years old?

    • @leanne424
      @leanne424 4 года назад

      Today a repairman diagnosed ($85) the thermalcouple/burner assembly and said it would cost $600 to replace the part! I'm glad I watched your video yesterday - I'm going to attempt it myself. I looked up the cost of a burner assembly $115.99 free shipping. Hope we ordered the correct part for AO Smith XVR40-100 serial #F05A082417.

    • @leanne424
      @leanne424 4 года назад +4

      Update - We installed the replacement burner assembly but couldn't get the pilot light lit. We called a plumber who briefly unscrewed the cap at the bottom of the gas pipe, then the pilot light came on in a few clicks. Best part of all he didn't want any money because he said he was nearby away and it took no time at. We gave him cash anyway. The first plumber was obnoxious when I questioned his charging $600, he then walked out without collecting the $85 fee.

  • @skippypromoter
    @skippypromoter Месяц назад

    can you mention how you set up the gas line to do this please? did you turn it off then on? how long was it off if so? Does it need to be on since there might be residual gas - is there residual gas? etc. And it seems some videos joke about the risks - how serious are the risks in relighting? is this for non pros to do? Seems there is missing information for some novices.

    If you've replaced the thermocouple but it still wont stay lit, coukd the orifice tube be clogged?

      Is the thermocouple enveloped by the flame? (it should be) If it is not, then possibly the orifice is plugged. If the new thermocouple is in the flame yet once you let go of the knob, the pilot light keeps going out, then likely your gas valve/control is bad. Have you tried holding down the pilot knob for at least a minute or two after you light it?

      @@WordofAdviceTV yes thermocouple is enveloped by the flame. Have held the pilot button down for 5 minutes but it goes out. I think garabadge got caught in the gas line into the gas control valve and is the issue.
