I mean, it’s one thing for someone not to be able to recognize the genuine article. But if someone imitates the original in FRONT of the original and it’s not a great imitation, can you blame them?
The overarching theme of Kiryu's substories isn't just the callbacks, but also highlighting how much he's helped change people's lives. Not just in the big scale of the Tojo Clan, but also in the regular people around the city. Which I think is a nice way to highlight Just HOW much Kiyru has accomplished these past games. He's a living legend in Kamarocho. Not just to the Yakuza, but to ordinary people as well. He's basically a folk hero of Japan in his own right by this point.

Just a reminder, Baba of the B-king was from Yakuza 1/Kiwami 1. The whole Takashi storyline in Kiwami 1 was that Takashi was the Florist of Sai's estranged son who fell in love with a Yakuza Boss's daughter. Kiryu was hired by the Florist to watch over Takashi as Takashi was trying to get out of the B-Kings and the Yakuza goons that were sent by his girlfriend's dad.

So yeah as you can probably tell Yakuza 4 was about the point where we were considering ways to replace Kiryu as the protagonist hence why a lot of his quests in this game involve running into a lot of familiar faces. The 4 protagonist angle was basically a test run as to possible replacements . As for designing the protag squad it's an idea i'm surprised took 4 games to get to. As discussed back in yakuza 0 and Kiwami 2 Kiryu's back tatoo and general theming is the azure dragon (Seiryu) of the east and Ryuji was the Golden dragon of the center. Each of the other protags fill in the remaining directions. Taiga is his directional opposite with the white Tiger (Byakko) of the west. while the dragon invokes creativty and benevolence the Tiger represents strength, courage, and doing things that are "Right". Legends regarding the Byakko depict it as a tiger that has Depictions are Dragons and tigers are often used to illustrate conflicting ideals or rivalries hence why he's the one who gets a boss fight against Kiryu. Akiyama is the Vermillion Bird of the south (Suzaku). It's often conflated with the phoenix and is a symbol of good fortune. Not only Did Akiyama "rise from the ashes" of his homeless life he now serves as a source of good fortune to others. His fighting style which is similar to crane style is also meant to be reminiscent of pecks and talons and at least in terms of how it was meant to work is supposed to make him the most mobile. Tanimura in turn is the Black tortoise of the North (Genbu). It is the directional opposite of Suzaku and so while Suzaku is Greater Yang, Genbu is Greater Yin, Hence while Akiyama is basically a saint Tanimura is a lot more Morally Dubious. Genbu is often depicted as a turtle with a snake for a tail hence Tanimura's figthing stlye being the most defensive like a turtle and having several retraints and grapples like snake style. It's also been noted that his poofy police jacket is kinda like a shell. While it clearly did not pan out for any of them to be permanent replacements it was at least an interesting start to move things in another direction (ba-dum tss) and a lot of what we started here would wind up being inspiration for the multi-styles in Yakuza 0, Yagami, and the protgag for Yakuza: like a dragon.

As previous parts have called back to previous entries, this part calls back to characters Kiryu has met in the previous games, particularly substories. Kiryu already having upgrades plays into this quite well.
Huh, I guess I missed yakuza 3.5 re:chain of memories where kiryu finds out old man Kazuma didn’t kill his mom and dad and that he accidentally used rubber bullets during the hit
Kiryu's substories having callbacks to the previous games is incredibly cool and really helps to show just how much of an impact the "Legendary Dragon of Dojima" has had.
Kiryu randomly finding Yasuko and helping her is the most fitting thing when you remember how far Kiryu will go for random people he meets on the streets.
I like how Kiryu's substories portray him as the Kamurocho legend he is, even though the thugs and his own impersonator somehow still don't recognise him.
The major theme of Kiryu substories is nostalgia and how Kiryu has affected all of these people's lives. Also don't forget about Kiryu's karaoke song for what I find better than Judgment from Yakuza 0.
The game tries to tell you that it is Akiyama who is the face of Kamurocho, but we won't be lied to. The face of Kamurocho is in fact Kiryu who gets recognised by 3486 random thugs on a short trip from New Serena to Milleniun Tower
Kiryu: If I had a nickel for everytime I had to beat the everliving shit of a guy who tried impersonating me, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice already.
I didn't find the comment of the day all that funny, but holy shit I was cracking up at you cracking up 🤣 glad you found it just so we could get that lol
12:11 Hanage Park seems to be a parody of CyberAgent's "Ameba Pigg/Pico" (Ameba Blog, their blogging service is already parodied in Y3 as Kamublo where Kiryu's original blog is hosted). One could say it's a predecessor of what's being attempted via Meta's metaverse Avatars. In Judgment & Lost Judgment we have the Twitter parody, "Chatter". Small details like this that capture how times change between games is something I really appreciate in this series.
I knew that comment would be COTD the moment I saw it got hearted. Mainly because it made me laugh, so I figured if it made _me_ laugh then Nico probably laughed at it too, and he usually gives cotd to comments that make him laugh really hard. Congrats to the commenter btw!
Man I love how in depth Yakuza goes into the many groups of its communities. We get to see the ins and outs of how a Yakuza family operates and how it can change over the years. We've seen a very realistic protrayal of how orphans in Japan are largely treated. The homeless have gotten a much bigger spotlight in this game alone. Even if only through one protagonist we also get a real good spotlight on Kamorocho's Asian immigrant communities. And most in depth of all: We get to appreciate just how well versed the thug community's elocution really is
1:21:30 Have you heard of the Jiro Dreams of Sushi documentary? I'm just reminded of the owner who is highly set in his ways as a sushi chef of a Michelin-three star restaurant and refuses to retire. Hmm.
1:03:10 Oh…wow. That’s…wow. If you don’t get what I’m on about, the title and the actress’ name of that movie is a reference to Shenmue; Yokosuka being the setting of Shenmue 1 and “Ryoko Hazuki” being a reference to Shenmue’s main character, Ryo Hazuki.
A love letter to the previous games by having these substories be connected to the previous stories from across the series. Kiryu has really done a lot over these years, huh? 😅
Huh... guess the Pocket Circuit Storyline from 0 Getting a Sequel in Kiwami was inspired by this game having quests following up on stuff that happened in 3. After all, we get a little insight into what's happening a year after the Reaper/HLA storyline and the long/annoying Ramen quest line. So thanks to this we can see how the older games influenced future games and the Kiwami remakes of the first two games. After all, Kiwanis 1 and 2 do have some stuff shared between them in certain places.
About what you mentioned in the beginning with a lot of these things where convenient to bring Kiryu back into the story, I find Yasuko's coincidence to be the least offensive, mainly because it was already mentioned that she was going to Okinawa to check if she could get in touch with Saejima. And personally, I think that alone could have been enough of a draw to bring Kiryu back into the main story, helping her get back with her brother and also protect her from the "cops" that are trying to grab her. I agree with you on how they could have fixed Hazakawa, if they need him to live to tell Kiryu this, I think this would be the better way to handle it, but honestly Kiryu could get enough of a drive to get back to Kamurocho just by wanting to help Yasuko alone
When you're watching this video and had to google some of the characters that Kiryu runs into, because your memory sucked just as badly as Kiryu forgetting his journals.
1:03:11 When I first saw Ryoko Hazuki Age 18 Sagittarius it really made me think of Shenmue since its... Ryo Hazuki Age 18 also Sagittarius Coincidence??? I think NOT!
Kiryu meeting all these very highly memorable substory characters from the previous 3 games. Suddenly, a random guy walks up to Kiryu. Guy: Hey! It's you!! Kiryu: Huh? Guy: You're the one who bought me a porno from that vending machine when I was a kid! Kiryu: OMG! That was Yakuza 0! Everyone who played this game in 2010 just suddenly gets confused as a paradox occurs and destroys the universe as this game came out years before 0 was even made.
The reason for meeting so many figures from Kiryus past is twofold. First, and this is just a rumor, but at some point they may have planned on Yakuza 4 being the end of the series. So they wanted it to have a feeling of finality, bringing back the old faces to see how they're doing. That obviously didn't happen and the rumor may be untrue. Second is the the game has a theme of past affecting the present. As we see, selfish or callous deeds have done nothing but create more misery, but a good deed too can affect others and make their lives better. Arai saving Akiyama from homeless hunters is what made him the man he is today, letting him then pay that kindness forward. We see here that Kiryu had a positive effect on quite a few people, even if it was done via a boot to the head. Saejima got his chance from Sasai, then continued to try and guide others on their path even if he could never be a teacher as he wanted to. Meanwhile we saw the callous actions of Katsuragi, Sugiuchi and Shibata create nothing but pain, both for themselves and those around them. Even Yasuko is creating a ripple effect since while more well-intentioned, her more selfish actions pulled in innocent people into the vortex of conspiracy going on. It's like the games main theme For Faith, one you only hear during the PS3 install screen, says. "Selfish deed is not freedom. Can't justify." Ot as it's said in the song with the engrish pronounciation, "Can't justifeeeeeeee!"
Ueda: I've got an idea. Why don't you two become partners? Matsuyama: But that would mean our dishes would compete against each other. Me: No, quite frankly it's the opposite. It would bring more business if there's now more variety on the menu.
Just a small thing about the cigarette Heat Move, is the cig actually stays in Kiryu's mouth before use, so you can queue it up in a battle and save it for later!
Compared to the other characters and their overarching substories, that kinda delve deep into their past and show how their own sense of morals and guidelines work, we don't need that heee, we've got around 3 ( not counting 0 as that wasn't written yet prior to 4 ) whole games with Kiryu, so to revisit some of the characters he's helped along the way is really cool in my opinion.
This will either be incredibly funny or incredibly stupid. Yakuza 4 remastered lp finale intro; Nico: and now, back to......kiryu? Kiryu......KIRRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYUUUUU. kiryu: *sighs, then whistles* All of a sudden the other characters from Yakuza 4 come charging over screaming finally. NICO: oh shit. Kiryu: you have no one to blame but yourself, I heard from the others you've been annoying the hell out of them, much like you have with me by YELLING MY NAME IN THEIR EARS. you have two choices: run like a chicken, otlr take like a man, your choice. Nico: won't end well either way. Kiryu:obviously
with those revelations it's kind of funny that multiple people are seeing these events it would have been funny if after getting all of them they either showed the ones that multiple people can get being actors or that you see one of the other protags at one of those events
Yeah Yakuza 4's Kiryu substories are a great microcosm of one truth that can be easy to forget for some players. EVERY SUBSTORY IS FULLY CANON! So on top of the long running grudge of a family of assassin superbosses, we also have teaching a woman how to be a better dom as canon, beating up a bunch of dudes in diapers as canon, Kiryu is canonically an actor in a movie about the yakuza, & he's canonically danced off against this world's version of Michael Jackson.
Me looking at the thumbnail with a pause at the discount Kiryu before watching the video questioning it. Putting a bet on myself if this goes full goof ball mode.
As much as people (including myself) love to harp on rubber bullets, in my opinion rubber bullets are actually one of the more tame among Yakuza 4's bizarre writing decisions and are only brought up so often for it's memetic potential. In reality, there are actually a lot of weird decisions in the story that unfortunately mostly come around in Kiryu's story simply because it's the climax of the story. Hamazaki somehow surviving and Kiryu somehow knowing Yasuko killing others are two of them but there are a lot more illogical twists that are to come.
14:50 Ah yes, I love going to my Closest and picking out Close for myself and my Closet friend. Where-in I then Clothes my Closest door and Console my Closeted Closet Friend.
Honestly, the chapter start with Kiryu showing up on the bus/train trip to Kamarocho where Kiryu just goes "I need to know everything" and her nodding and it cutting off there before opening up where it is now. It COULD keep it as a black out to prevent the recap of her story once again in the story. If there was something she knows that isn't known to the player, they can do a flashback later to explain it.
Ugh, that side quest with Matsuyama and the Ramen inspiration made me a little homesick for Cali. 😢 My cousin or friend brought us to this one place they heard about called "Tatsu Ramen" that uses black garlic oil. Eating that on a cold and rainy afternoon? It sure makes you appreciate when places like that are in reach. And from what I could remember on the synopsis of the founder (posted in their shop) he traveled and trained under the best back in Japan, which was how he came up with lot of his star menu items here in the U.S.
to be fair yasuko being at the police station makes sense her being there the exact time kiryu and hamaaki show up is the plot convenience not her in itself being there I mean where else would she inquire about the prison city hall?
it's starting to look like kiryu's substories in yakuza 4 are just "remember this guy? remember this guy? remember this guy? remember this girl? remember this girl? remember this guy?" so many people from past games lol

Nico: Never retire, work until you die. This is Japan. You’re never allowed to.
Me: Deep.
Kiryu's substories having callbacks to the previous games is incredibly cool and really helps to show just how much of an impact the "Legendary Dragon of Dojima" has had.
19:38 :
Fake Kiryu: "Why am I hearing a boss theme music?
Kiryu: *Standing behind menacingly*
Kiryu randomly finding Yasuko and helping her is the most fitting thing when you remember how far Kiryu will go for random people he meets on the streets.
I like how Kiryu's substories portray him as the Kamurocho legend he is, even though the thugs and his own impersonator somehow still don't recognise him.
Hey here’s a fun drinking game take a drink every time a Yakuza game has an important moment at Millenium Tower.
Losing your liver is a very fun game indeed
This is a clever ploy of trying to sell Legendary Drinker of Ryukyu overruns to the Picky Penguins, isn't it
Yasuko just sitting there and staring a hole in the wall as Kiyru asks to heat up some curry is pretty hilarious.
I feel like Nico's 4th-wall-wisecracks with Kiryu help fill out what is likely to be the shortest of the 4 chapters. 😂
12:11
Hanage Park seems to be a parody of CyberAgent's "Ameba Pigg/Pico" (Ameba Blog, their blogging service is already parodied in Y3 as Kamublo where Kiryu's original blog is hosted). One could say it's a predecessor of what's being attempted via Meta's metaverse Avatars.
In Judgment & Lost Judgment we have the Twitter parody, "Chatter".
Small details like this that capture how times change between games is something I really appreciate in this series.
Kiryu has so many friends in Kamurocho I'm surprised no one recognizes his name.
Not even the impostor got much by the name itself, which is weird
The Comment of the Day had to be good if Nico could barely get it out through his laughter.
I knew that comment would be COTD the moment I saw it got hearted. Mainly because it made me laugh, so I figured if it made _me_ laugh then Nico probably laughed at it too, and he usually gives cotd to comments that make him laugh really hard. Congrats to the commenter btw!
Yuya: And nowadays we write blogs in our Facebook, Kiryu-san.
Kiryu: Facebook? What kind of book is that?
Hmm.
Nice! Another early episode upload! RE4 is the gift that keeps on giving!
Don’t forget to do karaoke as Kiryu! He has a variety of cheering and singing songs as to be expected
@1:25:03 Is Kiryu facepalming in his idle animation here? Man, he looks so done with all this stuff.
"Unfortunately, I don't drive". Ha.
Me scanning the entire video for karaoke.
38:20 It's easy to forget but it looks like this random Komaki disciple has Yakuza 3's Joji Kazama's moveset! Reuse Ga Gotoku Studios.
*Sees an impersonator*
Kiryu: Aww shit, here we go again.
A love letter to the previous games by having these substories be connected to the previous stories from across the series. Kiryu has really done a lot over these years, huh? 😅
Looks like this Fake Kiryu came here when you were calling out for Kiryu at the start of each episode.
Huh... guess the Pocket Circuit Storyline from 0 Getting a Sequel in Kiwami was inspired by this game having quests following up on stuff that happened in 3.
Given the multiple playable protags and Kiryu's substories, I knida wonder if they expected Yakuza 4 to be the last one.
Good ol Jazzuma Jiryu is back baby!
"Who are you?"
"I'm me"
"No, I'm me"
"I'm me, he says"
DOES NOT COMPUTE.
DOES NOT COMPUTE.
SYSTEM SHUT DOWN.
@@soul6733 I was just about to comment that! XD
GOD DANG IT, I knew this show up. 😂
1:03:11 When I first saw Ryoko Hazuki Age 18 Sagittarius it really made me think of Shenmue since its...
Ryo Hazuki Age 18 also Sagittarius
Coincidence??? I think NOT!
There is also another vague Shenmue reference in Yakuza involving Blue Rose which is also the name of Joy's bike in Shenmue 2.
I really thought the locker sequence would be the intro to this episode.
BRO IT IS THE FAKE KIRYU FROM KIWAMI 2
@13:07 And you know, it would be hard to post as someone else...who's in jail.
Ueda: I've got an idea. Why don't you two become partners?
Matsuyama: But that would mean our dishes would compete against each other.
Me: No, quite frankly it's the opposite. It would bring more business if there's now more variety on the menu.
God dammit Nico your laughter is too contagious lol
Uploading this early is surely breaking the natural order.
Hey Nico, reminder to do some Karaoke as Kiryu whenever you can.
Awesome! I literally just got caught up on the last two episodes and this is posted right after! I appreciate these pre-11pm uploads yo!
Nico struggling to read out the COTD due to laughing at it so much is such a delight.
Every fucking time Yakuza games talk about their really nice japanese food like Ramen, Takoyaki, yakiniku, all that, It makes me so hungry. Not fair!
This will either be incredibly funny or incredibly stupid.
Yakuza 4 remastered lp finale intro;
Nico: and now, back to......kiryu? Kiryu......KIRRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYUUUUU.
kiryu: *sighs, then whistles*
All of a sudden the other characters from Yakuza 4 come charging over screaming finally.
Kiryu:obviously
with those revelations it's kind of funny that multiple people are seeing these events it would have been funny if after getting all of them they either showed the ones that multiple people can get being actors or that you see one of the other protags at one of those events
gang members: "we have you outnumbered and surrounded!"
kiryu: "wait, there are five of you?" *grins in a chance to use that one heat move*
Oh sweet, another early upload . Thanks Nico :)
Thugs with fake Kiryu: Oh please don't hurt me!
Thugs with real Kiryu: I AM GONNA TAKE YOUR SOUL!!!!!!
1:19:55 Well, they _are_ called "culinary *arts*"
My cousin or friend brought us to this one place they heard about called "Tatsu Ramen" that uses black garlic oil.
Nico's laugh is very contagious. 😆
to be fair yasuko being at the police station makes sense her being there the exact time kiryu and hamaaki show up is the plot convenience not her in itself being there I mean where else would she inquire about the prison city hall?
it's starting to look like kiryu's substories in yakuza 4 are just "remember this guy? remember this guy? remember this guy? remember this girl? remember this girl? remember this guy?" so many people from past games lol
Upcoming scene-
Akiyama- How many people did you kill, Yasuko?
Yasuko- Not as many as my brother.
Tanimura- Umm,,,,
BEHOLD...THE DRAGON OF FAUX-JIMA
The time has come and so has Kiryu. Both of them!
25:57
Don't forget the Karaoke
Hamazaki was shot with red paint, it was a paint ball gun, cmon guys keep up 😂
36:38 - Aww, this just sounds like SUCH a genuine Asian Parent thing to say, omg! "Yes, I use the Internet, child! And I hate doing it! I'm doing it for you! Now do something for me!" XDDD That's how they show they're really trying! (Disclaimer that I am White, and this is not my experience, but what I have heard from many Asian people telling their stories of their parents. Third-hand knowledge.)
