Blenheim Training with Sam Griffiths - Helmet Cam

- Not our finest hour at this training session with Australian eventer Sam Griffiths at Swalcliffe Park! Having not been out for 6 weeks Pigeon (and myself) started off far too keen and soon ran low on energy ploughing through all the show jumps. I guess she has lost some fitness! I was also very rusty and made plenty of mistakes with my dodgy riding, hence the two run outs... Oh well, it's always better to make the errors while training. It was very useful to get a taste of what is to come at Blenheim Palace... in two weeks (eek)! This is an arena based eventer's challenge of 8 show jumps, 8 cross country fences and a final show jump to finish. A very tricky format with the fences at 105 cm. :)
I can now say I have trained with a Badminton winner... Well done Sam :)
+A Horse Called Pigeon you and pigeon are just the most amazing pair also i was wondering what camera and mount you use for your videos im thinking of saving up for the go pro hero but i was wondering what you use before i make a decision thanks
Ah very cool! My Dad has a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition and uses it for snorkelling/diving/all things water related and it was from there that I thought OO! Oo hello GroupOn! Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my comment, I love Pigeon she is so cute and very like my mare. (Both crazy Irish things! Although my girlie is shorter and younger. Not that you can tell the way Pigeon flies over those jumps - good job!) x

That sounds like a fun event! I have not done a long format one with the roads and tracks and steeplechase phases. I think in the R&T you have to the two phases at different speeds (some in trot, some in canter etc) and carry a stop watch so you can be sure that your time is correct! If you look up the schedules for the Milton Keynes unaffiliated 3 day events (on their website) they have info about these phases and how to prepare for them and ride them on the day! I hope that helps a bit :) xxx
Oh, that's sad but it sounds like you have done the best thing for you and for Sunny! Riding is meant to be fun so it's no good being scared all the time :) I hope you and Pride have lots of happy adventures together. xx
I love questions! Thanks for commenting and watching... after I fell off twice, I felt a bit sore and stiff, Pigeon had a cut belly, but the GoPro... well the GoPro was screaming for more! The super sturdy casing is one of the main selling points - practically indestructible and completely waterproof with the right back door on it! It is a lot of cash but if you are in the UK keep an eye on GroupOn they have been selling them at 40% off. ;-) x

Thanks very much! Surely you could quietly 'borrow' your Dad's GoPro... or convince him he should get a new WiFi one? I also dive but haven't since I have had the camera - would love to take it for a swim though. There is a great video on RUclips about a GoPro that was lost at sea for months and still worked when it washed up and found its back to the original owner... as I said indestructible! xx

Hahaha - that's brilliant! I plan to make a '50 names of bay' video at some point over winter most likely - you will have to add that one... Pigeon has so many nicknames! :D
Just eventing without the dressage. But you get different formats. Sometimes it's a full course of show jumps and full course of XC (like at Aston earlier this year). In this one it's one course with SJ and XC mixed up... quite tricky!

Thanks Esmee! There was a lot of warming up - a bit too much. We kept going too fast so Sam would send us around again and again... I didn't put it all in though! xx
She is 15 years and 16 hands! I have no idea where the name came from. Perhaps the person who named her will see one of my videos one day and tell me! x

Unforchantly we had to sell sunny because he was just a bit of a handful and scared me a bit but we have a 15 year old mare now called pride, much calmer and is a better ride :)
going deeper into the jump just makes it a better chance for them to knock down a pole
I agree but sometimes going on the long strides encourages a flatter more forward jump that can lack the hight you need! I think a lot of the problems we had during this session was down to Pigeon getting tired really quickly (she was very excited to start, it was hot and she was very fluffy... this year I will probably clip her earlier)! Ah looks like you had a brilliant time! I live very locally to this xc course :). A question about your hatcam - i think you previously mentioned that it was a GoPro, and I would be terrified of spending that much money in the first place, but I would be more scared of falling off and breaking the GoPro. I've seen you have filmed falls etc in other videos, is the GoPro still going strong and do you have one of those case/shell things for it? Sorry - I'm sure you get lots of questions! Thanks. :)

I need advice! I am doing a eventers challenge 28th (Inter schools) but we have 4 phases?? A. Track & Road B. Steeplchase C.Track & Road D. Showjumping and cross counrty - ANY ADVICE GREATLY APPRECIATED :D

she's such a cutie:) just watched your actual round at blenheim well done:) Don't worry about the refusal at least you know why she did it and you can correct it and do even better next year! Correct me if i'm wrong, which I probably am but it looks like she's much better off a long stride because she seems to knock them down when she gets too deep? xxx
Yep - in the past we have always aimed at the longer strides but I am working with a new trainer who is encouraging a more athletic jump from a deeper spot! It all depends on the day, ground (last weekend I would have been better going long out of the bog) etc etc! Thanks so much for watching :) xxx
A Horse Called Pigeon No problem and haha I thought so :) Mine is the same he's only 14.3 hh (he's an eventer) but is a very stridey pony and always goes off a longer stride but we are trying to collect him up more and get a bit more impulsion:Pxxx
Just like in the eventing I do! You will have to try and judge your speed without a watch then... nightmare! Good luck - let me know how it goes :)
