Caught this band several times live and similarly with Marc Johnson on bass as well. RIP Dennis Irwin, master class in feel and tone. I heard them two back to back shows at the Ark in Ann Arbor MI and was the last to leave from the first show. John and Joe invited me backstage while they were having a buffet of food in the green room on this tour, wow what a memory and they were all so kind and friendly. Met Mike Stern before a show at the Ark once as well, that venue used to get the best jazz and fusion acts, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Bob Berg, the list goes on and on. Sad that they no longer book this type of material there. This was a magic era for Sco. Thanks for posting…these guys were functioning at such a high level and so in sync with one another, pure art!

A great period in Sco's distinguished career. I love this band, it really swings behind the solid bass playing of the late, much missed Dennis Irwin. Timeless jazz of the highest order.

Love Sco's comping style behind Joe, just out of this world and what a beautiful piece. RIP Denis Irwin

Thanks for sharing. Sco is one of my all time favorite musicians in any genre period. He's the musician that really got me into Jazz. Always in great company, with Dennis Irwin's class swing, and Bill and Joe's both sensitive and ferocious playing.

To me, Scofield is rivaled only by Bill Evans. Both, to me appear to have changed Jazz music by sheer expectation-changing technique, and because of their uniquely amazing technique, and insanely lively and original composition.
Personally, I absolutely believe there was a before Sco and is an After Sco definition, and execution of, Jazz guitar. He is the fearless leader, the father, of the always on Chorus pedal in Jazz/Fusion solo guitar lmao. I remember first hearing that and being like ah man I like him so much, but then he hits they chorus pedal and bleh. LMAO. After a bit of just letting it happen to my ears....I became hungry for that sound. I craved it. Only Sco did it, so I figured to hear new sounds like that....I'm gonna have to do it lol. So I started my absolutely meticulous study of Scofield. Call it an Anonymous Tutelage from Sco. I have watched EVERY recorded performance available, at least twice. Studying the original ways he performs his comps. I have obsessively listened to each of his solo albums, sometimes for months straight of just listening to Hand Jive for instance...Hand Jive and A Go-Go both took about 4 months to get perfect and study enough to absorb some of his feel and phrasing into my vocabulary. It's been 8 years of this.
I am just now feeling confident enough that if I have the opportunity to play a Halloween show...I will dress up as him and be very able to perform a small handful of his songs exactly as they are on the albums....with a bit of an 'in character ' improv solo lol. I'm hoping to set something like that up with a professional vid and sound guy this Halloween lol. Would be fun

Beautiful! 1990s Scofield is really, really good Scofield. "What They Did" (here called "Grace Under Pressure" for some reason?) is spectacular.

Second tune is "What They Did" (not "Grace Under Pressure").

This is incredible to watch. I saw 3 out of 4 of these guys 2 years ago at Jazz Fest here in Rochester, NY. Ben Street was in on bass, but the other 3 were the same. Was amazing!

I'm so glad there are so many people on this page asking about the bassist: in a just world everyone would know about Dennis Irwin! ! !

Music is beautiful . Unfortunatelly the mixing is very unballanced. Guitar and sax too loud compaired to rhythm section.

Hey Gergo it happens sometimes. I learned this music on cassettes that were copied from cassettes that were copied from… We're lucky to have it… Use your imagination - you'll hear what's happening…
