"We begin, with a long time favorite of Hilo..."
Throwback Tuesday: In celebration of the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival being this week, I felt it was appropriate to share this powerful performance by the Miss Aloha Hula 2001 competition winner, Natasha Oda. Through our understanding of ʻike kūpuna, or ancestral knowledge, Oda demonstrates some of the physical and spiritual capabilities we Hawaiians inherently posses. Kumu Hula Pualani Kanakaʻole Kanahele refers to this privilege as "ancestral DNA," suggesting that we kānaka are able to channel our ancestors by partaking in practices that our kūpuna were well rooted in. For many Hula practitioners, this is where the concept of noho (spiritual possession/enlightenment) also comes into play. Regardless of what one may or may not believe in, it cannot be denied that when a Hawaiian who is spiritually strong performs a hula, there is no way that kind of performance can ever be duplicated.

All of the chanters and Natasha's chanting were sublime. She embodies the legend she dances, channeling the energy and bringing the story to life. Magnificent!

This is the most incredible hula that I have seen. I was born and raised in Hawaii so I have seen a lot of hula. No one can equal Natasha Oda's performance. She defies gravity. Now I know what hula will look like in heaven. Aloha.

Thus far there has been no Miss Aloha hula has that have been able to top Natasha's performance... and there has been many beautiful dancers after but for whatever reason her dances stick out more than anyone else's in Merrie Monarch history... I remember watching this when I was about 13 and just remember thinking I would give anything to be able to dance like her

Oda's kahiko dance "Mele Aloha No Kaulana-i-ka-poki'i E Keaomelemele" tells the story of Keaomelemele, who passes on her knowledge of hula and chant to her beloved younger sister Kaulana-i-ka-poki'i. The two sisters then perform to the great interest and delight of others.
Oda acknowledges Ho's record of producing a string of five Miss Aloha Hula first-place winners during a remarkable streak in the 1980s.
Oda is among the crowd favorites; her kahiko performance, “Mele Aloha No Kaulana i ka Pōki‘i e Keaomelemele,” threw the Edith Kanaka‘ole Stadium audience into a frenzy during the Merrie Monarch nearly twenty years ago. They erupted in deafening cheers for Oda’s interpretation of the mo‘o (lizard) Inanea.

Thanks for this. The story is missing in the heading and while I was from the first absolutely mesmerized by BOTH the hula and the chanting, aside from feeling reactions to the poses and intonations sense was missing while the mana came thru.

The story is about a giant lizard (mo'o in Hawaiian) who transforms to a beautiful woman and back, not about a goddess summoning her sister as was mentioned below. That is why you can see her reptile movements and claws like a lizard.
