Thank you for all the close ups and wonderful overall quality teach and presentation as always Jon! Seriously such a life saver for board game research and learning 💕
Hi Jon. Thanks a lot for the playthrough. It was excellent, and very clear as always. Great job by Dave helping out with the explanations too. Just in case you would like to add a note to the Klingon subtitles, at 1:24:14 Dave plays Changa to claim the 20 corruption tile at Tarkovsky's Lair. He does not get the core value of the tile because he is maxed out on both Power and Guile. However, when you play a card you can activate its abilities in any order, so Dave could have first Vanquished to get the corruption tile and after that activated the core value of the card for a Power and a Guile. Love your videos. Keep up the great work!
I just played this last week and someone asked about the ordering. I looked it up and realized we had played it wrong, so thanks for pointing this out here. Glad you enjoyed it!
CORRECTIONS: 22:42 - The Secret Facility also has a "gain top card from the deck" ability but we didn't notice this while playing. 35:19 - Dave forgot to gain 2 guile from the activation of the card he just took. 1:24:14 - We didn't realize you can perform gain the core value and action in any order. So Dave should have vanquished first, before gaining the core value. 1:32:04 - Dave forgot to gain the benefit from his Synergy Halo upgrade which gives him 1 power when he gains at least 2 guile, which did just happen. 1:33:19 - Dave again forgot to gain the benefit from his Synergy Halo upgrade which gives him 1 power when he gains at least 2 guile, which did just happen.
Thanks for the playthrough! I was initially going to pass on Expeditions but you and Dave made it look fun, so I'm going to reconsider and maybe pick up a copy.
This was such a fun playthrough, Dave is hilarious he really added some awesome flare to this playthrough (even if he got demolished). He did win the boasting bragging rights about Tarkovsky's layer bahaha, you lose there Jon. I'm curious about Expeditions now! I've never played Scythe and definitely want to try/buy that, but this feels like it scratches that "comfort food" itch. Looks like its a breeze to teach others, and the tucking/tableau actions seem really satisfying and simple in their individual components. Been craving easier games to teach others as being the teacher gets a bit exhausting sometimes. I think from one of your "gaming coming and going" videos you mentioned you really enjoyed your time but this game has now left your collection, I'm curious on if this has staying power. It's giving me Tapestry combo-vibes and I don't know if it would serve me to have both (but I have been on a Stonemaier kick so I have the itch to throw money at them...). Anyways, excellent work! I'd love to hear from someone else who's been giving this game a lot of love in multiplayer for a longer period of time how it's been for them!
Don't read too much into games leaving our collection, we have SO many arriving that I have to make hard cuts all the time. I did quite enjoy this game, and would happily play it more, but it's a big box on the shelf and removing it made room for two others.
@JonGetsGames I didn't read too much into it, I can only imagine the sheer amount of games that get sent to you monthly. I decided against getting Expeditions, I had a look at my collection and saw a lot of combo-tastic engine-buildy games and I dont think i need another one. Funnily enough the game Fort by Leder Games has a lot of similar concepts that expeditions has so it was a bit hard to shake that knowledge bahaha. Leaning towards games with more interaction between players these days.
Thanks for the video! Was very similar to my first game. I had Akiko, maxed out meteorites, and won handily. Strange that only two starting hexes give workers. With more players, those later in turn order would probably have a somewhat wasted first Play action.
I did play this at 4p and was the last player at the start. It took a while to get workers, but I focused instead on other things like exploring and gaining more cards than opponents. I ended up winning!
1:33:09 Dave gained so much guile in pairs. He did not grab the Strength bonus from both playing Olga (2 guile and 1 strength +1 bonus) and gaining all his quests' core values (2 guile and 2 strength + 1 bonus) loving the play so far. So excited to get my copy :) Also, Dave's voice is /*chef's kiss*/
Three are several places where Dave puts gained cards into his hand rather than his discard row. Sorry I don't have all the time stamps but there are quite a few.
At 1:24:10 Dave does not take his guile or power because he is maxed. He could do the ability first, spending all of his power and guile and the gain the core values. “In any order, (a) you may gain the card’s core value (in the upper left) and (b) you may place a worker on the card to activate its ability (at the bottom).” Edit:(it looks like you caught this, because at 1:27:37 he had 2 of each - where did the extra guile come from?) Ok. I didn’t have Klingon subtitles on.
The contents show 123 unique cards in the deck. How many cards would you say you revealed during your playthrough? Or what percentage of the deck did you consume in a single play?
At 34:32, Dave plays Control the Possesed and put a purple worker on it. He then takes the card but did not activate it. Shouldn't he Gain 2 guile since he has no corruption? Or does he still have to pay for it with a purple worker and, since he does not have one, cannot activate the newly acquired card?
The turn at 1:18:26 with the playing of Jiro you could have taken the 20 tile. Don't know if you considered that and decided against it because it didn't fit with your future plans (heading towards the quest and getting all those upgrades) but the moment before made it seem like you didn't have a way to get the 20 tile.
@1:15:15 - Dave gains 2 guile an 1 power as the reward for Olga solving a quest. He can't take the 2 guile because he's maxed at 10... but I'm wondering if this would still trigger his item (gain a power when you gain 2 guile)... possibly?
I would say no, because he does not actually gain it. The example seems to back this up. “MAXIMUM: You cannot have more than 10 power or 10 guile. Example: If you have 9 power and you use an ability that would grant you 2 power, gain only 1 power instead”
@38:30 - I think rather than refreshing, you should have gathered and played. Sure, Jiro only gets you one guile, but he gets you no guile if you don't use him. Also, you're on hex 3 and there's a quest out there for hex 3 that you could gather, as the gather ability for hex 3 is pick up a face up card.
He also gained another 2 guile during that same turn and didn't get the extra power, should he have gotten another power or do you gain a single extra power if you gain 2+ guile during your whole turn?
Thanks guys it was a great presentation but the game looks awfully dry and not very exciting in itself. Not sure how much two of you had fun with it but it's a far cry from Scythe and probably will be a pass in our group
Mmm using a gather to refresh isn't actually worth that much. You lose a gather (opportunity cost) AND your next turn has 1 less action (compared to after-refresh action). So the only thing you gain is tempo of 1 turn.
I really like your stuff, and your friend seems very nice. But my brutally honest reaction is that this is not up to the high bar that you have set for yourself. I watch your play throughs for precise and clear examples of how the game is played, and this was not quite there. I gave up about 20 minutes in. I don’t want to hear cute comments about the pictures, and I don’t really want to hear about strategy. I just want to understand how the game plays.
You do the best playthroughs on RUclips… efficient and precise with amazing clarity. Thank you Jon for creating a great community
Thanks so much for the kind words :)

@ 50:58 Dave took the purple card when he should have only activated it’s ability

Thanks- I really enjoyed watching your play through. It’s great how you both explain what you’re doing as you play.
Looks very interesting. Melding meteorites seems extremely powerful for endgame scoring, it definitely gave Jonathan the edge.
thanks Jon and Dave...this was a very entertaining playthrough
Thanks for making this! It was great to watch with great editing!
Thanks for the playthrough! I was initially going to pass on Expeditions but you and Dave made it look fun, so I'm going to reconsider and maybe pick up a copy.
I have this game pre-ordered and your play through has me very excited to get it to the table! It looks quite entertaining.
Waiting for the preorder. This'll help me curb my anticipation until it shows. XD Thanks
OH MY GOODNESS, THE HAIR!!!!! nice

A great fun video, thank you. How about a new play through with the expansion?
I almost never make multiple videos for a game, too many games and too little time. I am glad you enjoyed this one :)
Dave (at 30:30) gained the benefit of the "Crater Rim", however the benefit is not EITHER Sweep or Refresh but BOTH Sweep and Refresh.
1:33:09 Dave gained so much guile in pairs. He did not grab the Strength bonus from both playing Olga (2 guile and 1 strength +1 bonus) and gaining all his quests' core values (2 guile and 2 strength + 1 bonus)

Good catches! I've added corrections. Glad you enjoyed this :)
Three are several places where Dave puts gained cards into his hand rather than his discard row. Sorry I don't have all the time stamps but there are quite a few.
Yes!!! Awesome!!!
At 35:00 should Dave have gotten two guile because his purple ability let him activate the ability of a card and then gain it?
Good catch! I've added a correction.
At 1:24:10 Dave does not take his guile or power because he is maxed. He could do the ability first, spending all of his power and guile and the gain the core values.
“In any order, (a) you may gain the card’s core value (in the upper left) and (b) you may place a worker on the card to activate its ability (at the bottom).”
Edit:(it looks like you caught this, because at 1:27:37 he had 2 of each - where did the extra guile come from?)
Ok. I didn’t have Klingon subtitles on.
@22:30, doesn't that gather action gain you a card and also rescue a card? Dave only rescues a card.
I was about to ask the same thing
Yeah, it looks like I misinterpreted that icon to be part of the rescue icon. I added a correction about this.
The contents show 123 unique cards in the deck. How many cards would you say you revealed during your playthrough? Or what percentage of the deck did you consume in a single play?
I'm not exactly sure, but it seems like we went through maybe a third of it?
@@JonGetsGames Awesome thanks. Seems like good replayability there.
Good catch, Dave did forget to grab the 2 guile from this activation. I've added a correction for this.
Good point, I didn't consider it though because I was trying to find a way to get to 7 corruption tiles in order to get that glory token placed down.
@1:15:15 - Dave gains 2 guile an 1 power as the reward for Olga solving a quest. He can't take the 2 guile because he's maxed at 10... but I'm wondering if this would still trigger his item (gain a power when you gain 2 guile)... possibly?
Huh, that is a good question that I don't know the answer to.

Also, you're on hex 3 and there's a quest out there for hex 3 that you could gather, as the gather ability for hex 3 is pick up a face up card.
Huh, yeah that is a good line I don't think I contemplated.
At 1:32:04, Dave forgot to gain a power because he gained 2 guile (an item ability).
He also gained another 2 guile during that same turn and didn't get the extra power, should he have gotten another power or do you gain a single extra power if you gain 2+ guile during your whole turn?
He forgot to gain the 1 power two times on that turn, I've added corrections for this.
Thanks guys it was a great presentation but the game looks awfully dry and not very exciting in itself. Not sure how much two of you had fun with it but it's a far cry from Scythe and probably will be a pass in our group
Glad you found the video helpful to figure out if it was for you.
@@JonGetsGames it really did help in making a decision. Thank you guys!
Mmm using a gather to refresh isn't actually worth that much. You lose a gather (opportunity cost) AND your next turn has 1 less action (compared to after-refresh action). So the only thing you gain is tempo of 1 turn.
You can also sweep though, and hopefully get new cards out that feed better into your strategy.
@30:15 it should be sweep and refresh, not just refresh.
Nope, when you gain a benefit on an adjacent hex you choose exactly one that is showing.
@@JonGetsGames You're right. Apologies.
Not feeling this. Just feels like mechanics.

I will continue making my tutorial "just me" videos as well as these playthroughs, I see them as being similar but still different types of content.
