War of Gargantuas is absolutely an AMAZING movie. I wish it would be released on Blu-Ray. I agree with Chris that all the non-Godzilla movies need a good Blu-Ray (or 4K) treatment.

Literally just finally pulled the trigger on that awesome Criterion Blue Ray set of the Showa films. Classic stuff, even though not every movie was amazing.
What a great episode of the Monster's Den. Rich's Godzilla prop was excellent. The Trio Of Terror is particularly enjoyable when each of the three expresses an opinion that either may be contrary to the other or when talking about what they specifically did not like about an episode. Remember seeing Destroy All Monsters in the theatre but now going to have to watch that and the Mechagodzilla ones [at least those] again with this show in mind. Had not seen Gojira until Pete did a review in a much earlier episode of the Den and then tracked it down. Whoa! Definitely a movie of its time but way ahead of its time. And never again will I be able to approach a swimming pool or other body of water without Chris Alo sounding in my brain to just get in the water. Thanks, guys. Really looking forward to the follow-up show next week.

What amuses me. most is that 2 members of Kurosawa's great Seven Samurai appear these films. Takashi Shimura appears in 3 (Gojira, Godzilla R Raids Again and Ghidorah, the three headed monster), and Minoru Chiaki who appeared in Godzilla Raids Again
“Godzilla vs The Sea Monster” was originally supposed to be a King King movie, that’s the reason why the lobster and the condor were just giant animals and not a Gigan/Megalon type of creature. “King King Escapes” w/ Mech-Kong, came years before “Godzilla vs Mecha-Godzilla”.

Angilas, Baragon and Varan WERE going to be a team... In the original version of GMK, they were going to use Angilas and Varan instead of Mothra and King Ghidorah, but Toho made Kaneko switch them out for more popular monsters...
I love how King Ceasar takes 40 minutes to summon and is built up and up, only for him to get bodied in 2 minutes once he appears lol. Thrown into a pile of rocks and that's that.
I wacthed sleepaway camp last night shudder never seen i took chance cause Pete was wearing shirt I figured got to be good ..great crazy movie I'm going wacth 2 and 3 weekend
The original will always be my favorite. Dark, desperate, brutal and unforgiving. I love that it is in black & white. Like Psycho, it being in black & white is what makes it even more creepy! It was ruined when Psycho II came out and that house was in color. And like Pete mentioned, the Akira Ifukbe soundtrack is essential to the feel of the movie. And I love how Godzilla looks. His eyes are super piercing and angry!
Smog Monster is my 'Zilla jam. So very dark, druggy, and downright freaky! The psychedelic club hallucination scene pushes it over the top for me. Warped my pre-teen mind. Thanks for the laughs, and "Save the Earrrrrrth..."
Son Of Godzilla my fav as cheesy and kiddy-oriented as it is. I like how Godzilla looks on that one. Give me that instead of the '98 offspring crap anytime.
This was a lot of fun! I have to say I am totally down with the dubbed movies! My ranking: Mothra vs. Godzilla - the overall best, costumes, story, special effects, eveything! Godzilla - the original classic, love both versions King Kong vs. Godzilla - a camp classic and sentimental favorite, my favorite Godzilla suit, crappy Kong suit but I love it anyway Godzilla Raids Again - love Anguirus Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster - the introduction of Ghidora, love this monster! Invasion of Astro-Monster - Ghidora again! more of a great thing Destroy All Monsters - campy but a lot of fun - Varan needed to be in this more than one sec. Love Baragon, more Baragon!! Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla - these two and Anguirus & King Caesar too! Terror of Mechagodzilla - love Titanosaurus Godzilla vs. Megalon - again campy but I do love it for Megalon. also love Jet Jaguar - dumb and fun! Godzilla vs. Gigan - enough talk! get to the action - more Ghidora! Godzilla vs. Hedorah - the Smog Monster! Ebirah, Horror of the Deep - just bad Son of Godzilla - just bad All Monsters Attack - just bad... Gabara is goofy fun but even he can't save it
Here’s my rankings, followed by a few thoughts about a couple of the rankings that will definitely ruffle some feathers. 15. Godzilla’s Revenge 14. Son of Godzilla 13. Godzilla vs the Sea Monster 12. Invasion of the Astro Monster 11. Godzilla Raids Again 10. Godzilla vs Megalon 9. Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster 8. Godzilla vs Gigan 7. Destroy All Monsters 6. Godzilla vs Hedorah 5. Mothra vs Godzilla 4. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 3. King Kong vs Godzilla 2. Terror of Mechagodzilla 1. Gojira Three Headed and Astro Momsger just don’t have enough monster action for my taste, even with Ghidorah being Godzilla’s arch nemesis. Same kind of issue with Destroy All Monsters for me but to a lesser extent, mainly due to that last fight. Yes there are a ton of monsters in DAM but there just not in it enough. Godzilla vs Gigan ranks pretty high on my list cause Gigan is my absolute favorite monster excluding Godzilla in the entire franchise. Terror of Mechagodzilla ranks so high for me, and so much so that I legitimately floated putting it number 1 but just couldn’t bring myself to do it, just cause I love Titanosaurus so much as a monster and love how the tables have turned from the previous film and now he’s up against two monsters this time around. Terror is probably the showa movie I go back and rewatcb the most, just really love it. And one final thing for the wrestling cheese in the latter shows films, you forgot about the flying drop kick from Godzilla vs Megalon.......WHICH HAPPENS TWICE!!!!
These Hudson Valley guys are great. They share all of my interests. Reminds me of the south shore of Staten Island back in the day; in the before time.
15. Godzilla's Revenge 14. Godzilla vs Hedorah 13. Godzilla Raids AGain 12. King Kong vs Godzilla 11. Ebirah Horror of the Deep 10. Son of Godzilla 9. Destroy All Monsters 8. Godzilla vs Megalon 7. Godzilla vs Gigan 6. Terror of Mechagodzilla 5. Godzilla vs Monster Zero 4. Godzilla (Japanese version) 3. Godzilla vs Mothra 2. Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster 1. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
The Mothra moth puppet was apparently dropped because it was a nightmare to operate. That's why they went with the larva for a couple of films. I'm guessing they dropped the character after that because they felt she didn't add much in that form. Shame, as I love Mothra.
Thank you guys! Love the classic Showa Era Godzilla films, actually love all the Eras, but these are the blueprint. Agreed with everything said. Yes the kiddie ones (Son of Godzilla, All Monsters Attack) are the weaker but I remember them growing up so they still hold a special place in my heart. No one mentioned the roar Titanosaurous makes in Terror of Mechagodzilla - sort of a laughing aquatic bubbly hard to describe trumpeting - absolutely fantastic! Very much looking forward to this great team tackling the more recent Toho movies!
Destroy All Monsters would've been a great time to introduce Gigan or have King Ghidorah morph into a bigger form like Emperor Ghidorah or some sort of 3 headed,2 armed,4 legged Ultraman-esque looking monster cause Ghidorah's powerful but he couldn't have taken on all Earth's Monsters by himself
Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster is my favorite. I liked the Mothra characters better in this movie than in Mothra vs. Godzilla. I found the Mothra movie a little too convoluted whereas this Ghidorah flick was streamlined & I dug every minute of it. Hedorah, The Smog Monster is pretty cheesy, but also has some really cool parts. It's trippy and it's even more brutal considering this monster actually represents a real life horror.
In the late 80s, Martin Scorcese was going to do a movie called "Godzilla VS Rodan" with Robert DeNiro playing Godzilla (no costume) and Joe Pesce playing Rodan (no costume). DeNiro actually spent like 6 months in Japan living as Godzilla to get into character with all that method acting shit etc, and actually got arrested in downtown Tokyo because he was walking around doing Godzilla roars and stuff and they assumed he was on drugs. The studio eventually "Hell No"d it because they thought the idea was "retarded". Fucking shame. On the bright side, as a backup plan, Scorcese made Goodfellas.
Hey Pete ... ok, here is where the "rubber meets the road" (or plastic monster, whichever) - anyways, not totally relevant to this program , but something that has to be addressed and resolved ... the seemingly relentless attempts to contend / combat Godzilla vs King Kong ! what !!! the would be a no contest ! Godzilla is loaded with so many more formidable weaponry and abilities - not to mention his size that prevails - he would kick King Kong's ass in a nanosecond - in reality (well, at least in an imagined reality)
I have the same figure. My daughters LOVE it as well. They have played with it since they were one or so. I would watch them to make sure they did not impale themselves on the spines.
Man i want to buy the criterion Blu Ray but theres only 5 films im interested in..and one is the Japanese cut of King Kong v Godzilla in SD transfer...but love these reviews..iprefer the Hesai period myself
How else was Gzilla supposed to fly without the tail-between-the-legs manoeuvre? Sources say, that its a scientifically viable method of flight. I love titanosaurus and angirus too! :)
I would say the showa era has the most stinkers but the most gems at the same time and in no order Monster Zero Godzilla vs King Kong Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla Ghirdorah Terror of Mechagodzilla
Only almost 6 minutes in and although I can see why there would be a trifecta of All Monsters Attack as the worst, I personally have to think Godzilla vs Megalon is even worse for me.
Speaking of pronunciations, the iconic reptilian behemoth was actually not originally called "Godzilla" in Japan, but "Gojira". Western audiences misheard this as "Godzilla" and the rest is history.
Wish I could have joined you guys for this show, but it sure was fun. Surprised that none of you mentioned the differences between the Japanese KING KONG VS. GODZILLA and the Americanized version. Oh, one more note: drink a shot every time you all pronounced "versus" as "verse"!!! (This has become a recent phenomenon, I am noticing).
Huge Goji fan. A few notes first: Never liked Anguirus. I don't get the love for him. He looks like my sister's hairbrush. I think Gigan sucked too. I never bought that a creature could organically be born with sunglasses and a buzzsaw chest. That said he is my ranking: 15. Godzilla Raids Again 14. Godzilla vs. Gigan 13. Godzilla vs. Megalon 12. Son of Godzilla 11. Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster 10. Terror of Mechagodzilla 9. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 8. Destroy All Monsters 7. King Kong vs. Godzilla 6. Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster 5. Godzilla's Revenge 4. Godzilla vs. Mothra 3. Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster 2. Godzilla vs. Monster Zero 1. Godzilla, King of the Monsters I also prefer the Japanese original to the Americanized version. I think Monster Zero has the best human/alien story. They make up for the lack of monsters. And Godzilla's Revenge was probably the first one I ever saw as a kid and I always identified with the kid. Plus, I loved the trainyard setting. Underrated. Gaborah is a wimp, but fits the story perfectly. I kind of like his look and sound.
Does ANY G-Fan EVER care about the "love" story or "back" story........? I agree with Chris...it would have been kick-ass to have Kong and G battle mecha-Kong and mecha - G at some point.....or even just mech-Kong vs mecha-G......
They also seem to especially have a large fanbase in the US and Japan, I guess past TV showings play a lot into it hence less familiar in other countries. US youtuber Jerome Weiselberry does many good Godzilla reviews on her channel.
"that's what i don't like about these Godzilla films they show of the humans with bad voice dubbing and out of synch lip movements and less of the monsters which is annoying i wished they would just have the monsters only maybe with voice overs for Godzilla and the other monsters."-🤔🖥🌐🌍🌎🌏🌐..
Now you guys need to rank the Toho Showa non-Gozilla Kaiju movies: Rodan The Mysterians Varan The Unbelievable Mothra Frankenstein vs Baragon War of the Gargantuas Atragon Matango Dogora King Kong Escapes Latitude Zero Space Amoeba
A sure way to ruin a movie is to shoe horn Raymond Burr into a film he wasn’t meant to be in. Just think if he was shoe horned into Aliens, Predator or Dickshark.
Showa Godzilla: Best to Worst. This is based mostly (but not totally) on my childhood. As an adult, there are differences in order. But I am listing my order based on my 12 year old self. I look forward to the Heisei period ranking show. The coolest thing is both my daughters are converts: They LOVE Godzilla. They are ten and twelve. Of course, their mom just rolls her eyes and calls me a perpetual teenager. 1 Ghidorah- The Three Headed Monster 2. Gojira (Original Japanese version) I bloody f*cking HATE the addition of Raymond Burr. Hated it as a kid as well. Why do we need a play by play announcer? 3. Terror of Mechagodzilla 4. Destroy All Monsters 5. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 6. Godzilla vs Gigan 7. Mothra vs Godzilla 8. King Kong vs Godzilla 9. Godzilla vs Hedorah (Smog Monster) 10. Invasion of Astro-Monster 11. Godzilla vs Megalon 12. Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (Godzilla vs the Sea Monster) 13. Son of Godzilla 14. All Monsters Attack 15. Godzilla Raids Again
Great show and info. Am i the only one who dislikes peter jacksons King Kong movie. Give me the monsters in the sinbad movies, and best in the series of the movies in which you discussed any day. I dont like cgi, jacksons movie is overblown crap in my book. The one with jeff bridges, is more faithful to the orginal. Felt more real too.
Yeah.....the kid in the shorts.....is well....laughable....... I would agree it's pretty weak....Probably the most "woke "Godzilla film (i.e. the bullying aspect).

Wow! t-shirt trio 👏
Godzilla vs the Smog Monster #1
My thoughts exactly. Godzilla vs Hedorah aka Godzilla vs The Smog Monster is my absolute favorite.
Totally.
#1 Godzilla movie of all eras “Bambi vs Godzilla”.
A fun episode. However, there was a green glitch on RUclips on my Roku and on my RUclips App, did anyone else get this?
Rich, which Godzilla figure is that you have there? It looks great.
How else was Gzilla supposed to fly without the tail-between-the-legs manoeuvre?
Sources say, that its a scientifically viable method of flight.
I love titanosaurus and angirus too! :)
I would say the showa era has the most stinkers but the most gems at the same time and in no order
Monster Zero
Godzilla vs King Kong
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Ghirdorah
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Only almost 6 minutes in and although I can see why there would be a trifecta of All Monsters Attack as the worst, I personally have to think Godzilla vs Megalon is even worse for me.
Speaking of pronunciations, the iconic reptilian behemoth was actually not originally called "Godzilla" in Japan, but "Gojira".
Western audiences misheard this as "Godzilla" and the rest is history.
Was disappointed that French band called that way didn't write about Japanese monsters or anything remotely alike.
The show I've been waiting for all my life!!!!!
one that was really bad was the one with the flying saucer
Doctor Eddie Ganja here hey Pete how about Original Ultraman series
That said he is my ranking:
15. Godzilla Raids Again
14. Godzilla vs. Gigan
13. Godzilla vs. Megalon
12. Son of Godzilla
11. Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster
10. Terror of Mechagodzilla
9. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
8. Destroy All Monsters
7. King Kong vs. Godzilla
6. Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster
5. Godzilla's Revenge
4. Godzilla vs. Mothra
3. Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster
2. Godzilla vs. Monster Zero
1. Godzilla, King of the Monsters
I also prefer the Japanese original to the Americanized version.
And the original has a character say I survived the atomic bomb for this and sideways to the Tokyo fire bombings
I have 2 taco bell godzilla cup holders
Does ANY G-Fan EVER care about the "love" story or "back" story........? I agree with Chris...it would have been kick-ass to have Kong and G battle mecha-Kong and mecha - G at some point.....or even just mech-Kong vs mecha-G......
Godzilla 4 ever
Rich was taking a kicking at the start.
The original King Kong vs. Godzilla. That monkey suit was terrible.
I think Godzilla's were mostly for dudes. My husband knew all of them. In the summer whenever we were outside on the patio I'd see Mothra 😂
They also seem to especially have a large fanbase in the US and Japan, I guess past TV showings play a lot into it hence less familiar in other countries. US youtuber Jerome Weiselberry does many good Godzilla reviews on her channel.
God dang you guys know your godzila movies
"that's what i don't like about these Godzilla films
they show of the humans with bad voice dubbing
and out of synch lip movements and less of the
monsters which is annoying i wished they would
just have the monsters only maybe with voice overs
for Godzilla and the other monsters."-🤔🖥🌐🌍🌎🌏🌐..
Now you guys need to rank the Toho Showa non-Gozilla Kaiju movies:
Rodan
The Mysterians
Varan The Unbelievable
Mothra
Frankenstein vs Baragon
War of the Gargantuas
Atragon
Matango
Dogora
King Kong Escapes
Latitude Zero
Space Amoeba
1 Ghidorah- The Three Headed Monster
2. Gojira (Original Japanese version) I bloody f*cking HATE the addition of Raymond Burr. Hated it as a kid as well. Why do we need a play by play announcer?
3. Terror of Mechagodzilla
4. Destroy All Monsters
5. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
6. Godzilla vs Gigan
7. Mothra vs Godzilla
8. King Kong vs Godzilla
9. Godzilla vs Hedorah (Smog Monster)
10. Invasion of Astro-Monster
11. Godzilla vs Megalon
12. Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (Godzilla vs the Sea Monster)
13. Son of Godzilla
14. All Monsters Attack
15. Godzilla Raids Again
I rewatch Godzilla vs Hedorah aka The Smog Monster more than any other Godzilla. Monster Zero after that
My 40 year old self is in almost complete agreement with 12 year old you.
Kong sucks Godzilla rules!👍🏼👍🏼
Godzilla's Revenge .........Revenge against who? LOL
Gadzooki lol
Worst. Monster. Movie. Ever.
Just jump in the f*****' water. 😂
Yeah.....the kid in the shorts.....is well....laughable....... I would agree it's pretty weak....Probably the most "woke "Godzilla film (i.e. the bullying aspect).
Godzilla vs Megalon sucks... The worst Big G film...
