Only 3 minutes in, have to say that I’ve been a Godzilla fan since a child, and I think Shin Godzilla is the BEST Godzilla movie. Period. If not for nothing, when he’s fully formed he looks so terrifying- it is the best design.
Great video guys!! Greetings from Germany!!! 😀 Just some thought about the 1998 Godzilla. A slight change of perspective changes the movie drastically. Ishiro Honda set out in 1954 to create a japanese "Beast of 20,000 Fathoms". Due to technical limitations they went with "suit motion" thus creating the unique style that we know and love, though not being anything like "Beast of ...". Now take a close look at Godzilla 1998, the structure, the shots and Godzilla's design. It is an almost perfect remake of "Beast of 20,000 Fathoms" ... thus being a more faithful representation of what the 1954 Godzilla set out to be ... 🤗 But ok, ok ... I do understand that it's quite similar to finally understanding that "Batman & Robin" is supposed to be a modern remake of the campy 60s series. Camera angles and all. Doesn't maje the movie better but does make you contemplate somewhat 😉
I’m gonna just rank my top 5 1. GMK 2. Final Wars 3. Godzilla vs Destoroyah 4. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah 5. Godzilla vs Megaguirus I know Final Wars isn’t a beloved movie but I saw it when I was a kid, and to this day I just love this movie. And with Godzilla vs Megaguirus, don’t know why but I just keep coming back to this movie all the time, especially for the final fight between the two monsters.
The final fight is frickin' AWESOME. The music, the standoff, the rushing together and the resultant fight is pure magic. That alone makes Final Wars worth the watch.
Think the Shin hate is a bit much. The film won Best Picture at the Asian Oscars so to say "People just liked it because it was a new Japanese Godzilla film" is quite patronising. As for Rich's barometer of screen time defining how good they are? By that standard Jaws, Alien and The Thing aren't very good films...
And Titanic won all sorts of awards here but I still dislike it. I could care less what awards Shin G won...to me (and to my colleagues here), it's just not a very good Godzilla film. If you love it, great, but you won't change my opinion.
David Gallagher I think they largely want to see giant monsters just beating the s**t out of each other, with the military and aliens thrown in. Hey, I like that too. But something like Shin Godzilla will go over their heads. It's actually a little too Japanese-centric for alot of viewers. If you don't "get" their culture, a lot of the stuff won't click.
There is a HUGE difference between the basic premise of any Godzilla film vs the Alien films, Jaws, and Carpenter's Thing. Godzilla, from movie #2 on, was sold as Kaiju fighting another/other Kaiju, whereas the other films you mentioned are very intertwined and Dependent on the human element to further the horror and psychological element(s).
Love you guys, respect y’all opinions to the fullest But, man did I really like Shin Godzilla. I can with without the laser beams out the back and tail, but his overall design really creeped me out, I loved it.

In Japan perhaps. Much of the rest of the world only ever got those 90s films on direct to video. If Mothra was indeed that big of a draw around the world, they would have released those in theaters, which a good chunk of the Godzilla films got, especially here in North America.
Shin Godzilla was made as a metaphor for how the Japanese government responded to the Fukushima disaster. That's why there's so many scenes of officials arguing. But, I totally get why one would not want that in a monster movie. Not something you're going into for.

It almost seems like they spend all their money on costumes and special effect that there is no money left for a well written script and quality actors. I hate to say it but it got worse after the Matthew Brodrick Godzilla.
In all honesty, I like the 2014 movie. They took the "Jaws" approach with Godzilla and for me it worked. It's Sequel may have some more action, but the human stuff (still the majority of the movie) was garbage. In 2014 that and the story actually worked fairly well.

Great episode....always a pleasure to hear u guys! one question: what do you think about Latitude Zero with Joseph Cotten and Cesar Romero as the villain? thank u for the great company and ciao from Italy..keep on ruling!!!
I loved the last two Godzilla movies. (I have been watching them since the 1960's) It think the first Godzilla 2014 set up the new series nicely. Of course he wasn't on the screen enough. It's like Heath Ledger's "Joker". He couldn't have been on screen enough for me. Same with Godzilla. But better to want more than to want it to end like the pathetic Boderick era piece of crap. "King of the Monsters" was pure entertainment. They looked amazing, and the fight scenes were impressive. The only issue I had was I didn't like his roar. The classic is what defines him...use that! I loved many of the films done in this era. Godzilla looked great for most of them and some great battle scenes. The stories were tighter in the early films...and the suits, graphics and CGI looked much better now. You would think they could find a way to combine them and make better films. Here's hoping. "Mega -a -Grrrrr - Us" is how I heard it.
First a thanks to Chris, Rich and Pete for rewatching all these Godzilla movies for this show and last week. And then special thanks to Chris who still is a bit under the weather health-wise but soldiered on so that the Trio of Terror could complete the Godzilla twofer shows this week. Rich, missed you Godzilla prop from last week but enjoyed having the skull in the cabinet behind you. And if I ever have a record company it is going to be named Asexual Reptile so the recordings can be an Asexual Reptile Production. Highly entertaining and fun show even when reviewing some of the lower echelon of these films. Thanks, gents!
Thanks guys! I agree with much said - “You can never have too much monster action” indeed! Also, let’s not even bother to include Godzilla 1998 - good call! Least Favs: Final Wars - Over the top kitchen sink CGI did not work; pathetic monster screen time cameos clocking in seconds; martial arts motorcycle race fight WTF?! - put the martial arts back into the monster suits ; but wait this is mainly CGI so no monster suits; super obnoxious young alien leader; yeah a tough one! Godzilla 2014 - Although I like Gareth Edwards Rogue One, this was a tease fest per Rich. Shin Godzilla - While I don’t hate this as much as Chris, I was just happy to see a Toho after Final Wars, a disappointing Cookie Monster eyed mess but also per Rich cinematography redeems somewhat. Not the Toho Godzilla movie I was expecting. Favorites: Godzilla 1984 - Like the Japanese version much better; it’s dark, he’s a villain again - super refreshing. Apparently Godzilla needs dandruff shampoo leaving mutated lice on the boat - nice touch. Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth - fun movie, Ferris wheel attack from Battra! Godzilla Tokyo SOS ; Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla - Great effects, fun movies, good balance human/monster action. Godzilla vs Biolante - “Little Shop of Horrors on acid!” Yes indeed Chris. Great monster in final form; scariest Kaiju so far; super story. Giant Monsters All Out Attack - Brutal indeed, great story and fight scenes, but pupil-less eyes for Godzilla do not work! Godzilla vs Destoyah - Brilliant evolution of Destoyah and ending so sad; like with ET I teared up first view. Alien rip offs galore - Alien mouth inside mouth for car size crustacean version as well as James Cameron Aliens tracking scene with monsters falling through roof. Funny how Toho likes to pay homage ( rip off?) American blockbusters - Indiana Jones outright steal, Spielberg references, etc Godzilla vs King Ghidorah - Time travel Godzilla origin story a lot of fun ; just reprogram the M11 Android genius. Fun how Godzilla ends up killing the surviving Japanese commander despite his love for the animal when it was a T-Rex like dinosaur; this is Godzilla, what did you think would happen?! Godzilla 2000 - the spaceship Kaiju was not a great idea but it transforms into the fantastic Orga Kaiju - however we only get 6 minutes of Orga! I was just happy to see a new Toho Godzilla at the time - fun how the dickish leader of the rival organization gets his just dessert from Godzilla at the end! Super psyched for the upcoming 5 favorite John Carpenter movies! You guys are awesome!
If the movie had been sold/advertised as a rampaging monster attacks New York, it was (semi) enjoyable. But calling it Godzilla fucked it up, and based on that, it blows chunks.
Great show as usual. Some comments: I loved 'Final Wars' for all it's nutty quick scenes with every monster in it. Read some manga. This craziness comes from that long-standing Japanese storytelling background. I love the Heisei period for this. 'Total comic book stuff' as Chris said. It's why everything becomes a mech also. You need the human characters in these films. None of the Godzilla movies are about 'Godzilla's in a jam. He has to solve this problem'. All monster fights would not be a movie. If you tried to write this stuff (or any screenplay...) you'd see the difficulty in getting something good on screen. Filmmakers never think 'we must follow the continuity' (except for the recent Marvel stuff, but that's top-down management of Disney-owned properties). Every creative individual wants to put his stamp on things.
My issue with KOTM 2019 is that a girl was the main character.I know that there are female fans and that's fine but most Godzilla fans are males and the audience could've identified with a young male character and!! they could've made more money, now i'm not saying these movies were "woke" and liked how they portrayed those environmentalist types like the dopes they are but yeah know! your! fanbase!
I am not as well-versed in the Heisei and Millenium era... I have seen them all (except for Shin), but some are indistinguishable to me. Surprised you all hated Final Wars and 2000. I loved those... Here is my abridged ranking based on what I can remember: 11. Godzilla King of the Monsters (18) 10. Godzilla (2014) 9. Godzilla 98 8. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla 7. The Return of Godzilla 6. Godzilla, Mothra and KG: Giant Monsters All Out Attack 5. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah 4. Godzilla vs. Biollante 3. Godzilla vs. Destroroyah 2. Godzilla 2000 1. Godzilla Final Wars I despise the US movies. They never got it right. Visually KOTM is best, but otherwise it is absolute drivel. 2014 is a snore. 98 was mildly entertaining, but not Godzilla. Final Wars was a hoot. Sure not much screen time, but they all made an appearance. Even Hedorah! My favorite villain! Top two Goji movies for me... 2) Invasion of the Astro-Monster 1) Gojira Showa is king!
Thank you for all your posts.Love all the lists and rankings. You have made lockdown so much better.Greetings from Australia by a Scotsman

Best line!
I liked how the trailers for the 2014 Godzilla made it look like the movie was going to be Godzilla vs. Walter White!
It should have been. They should have dropped GI Joe and kept their best actor (Cranston) alive. That way you could at least care about the human character since Godzilla was barely in it.
With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound
He pulls the spitting high-tension wires down
Helpless people on subway trains
Scream, bug-eyed, as he looks in on them
He picks up a bus and he throws it back down
As he wades through the buildings toward the center of town
Oh, no, they say he's got to go
Go! Go! Godzilla, yeah
Oh, no, there goes Tokyo
Go! Go! Godzilla, yeah.......
BOC....
The sad thing is they finally used the song in the last movie but they dissed BOC and had the guy from System of a Down do the song and it wasn't nearly as good. That was a travesty to me.

Rich would make a good Radu
For Rich Catino some reptiles are livebearers or alternatively some females can do it without a mate using a process called parthenogenesis
Keith Emerson did most of the music for Final Wars, just a cool little piece of information and even with that, still absolute shit.
I watched last night godzilla returns 1984 I loved it I'm not going to watch the American 1985 version no point
Yall dead wrong about final wars
Thanks guys! I agree with much said - “You can never have too much monster action” indeed! Also, let’s not even bother to include Godzilla 1998 - good call!
Least Favs:
Final Wars - Over the top kitchen sink CGI did not work; pathetic monster screen time cameos clocking in seconds; martial arts motorcycle race fight WTF?!
Favorites:
Godzilla 1984 - Like the Japanese version much better; it’s dark, he’s a villain again - super refreshing.
Funny how Toho likes to pay homage ( rip off?) American blockbusters - Indiana Jones outright steal, Spielberg references, etc
Godzilla vs King Ghidorah - Time travel Godzilla origin story a lot of fun ; just reprogram the M11 Android genius.
4:25 no, Godzilla's Revenge is NOT watchable. Lol
When will the people creating these movies realize that we aren't there to see some Japanese bickering and were there for the monsters
I liked the Emmerich Godzilla (1998), it was different.
If the movie had been sold/advertised as a rampaging monster attacks New York, it was (semi) enjoyable. But calling it Godzilla fucked it up, and based on that, it blows chunks.
Great show as usual. Some comments:
I loved 'Final Wars' for all it's nutty quick scenes with every monster in it.
Have you heard Kate Bush's "Hammer Horror"?
My issue with KOTM 2019 is that a girl was the main character.I know that there are female fans and that's fine but most Godzilla fans are males and the audience could've identified with a young male character and!! they could've made more money, now i'm not saying these movies were "woke" and liked how they portrayed those environmentalist types like the dopes they are but yeah know! your! fanbase!
Worst takes on Shin Godzilla ever in this video. That movie rules
I am not as well-versed in the Heisei and Millenium era... I have seen them all (except for Shin), but some are indistinguishable to me. Surprised you all hated Final Wars and 2000. I loved those... Here is my abridged ranking based on what I can remember:
11. Godzilla King of the Monsters (18)
10. Godzilla (2014)
9. Godzilla 98
8. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla
7. The Return of Godzilla
6. Godzilla, Mothra and KG: Giant Monsters All Out Attack
5. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
4. Godzilla vs. Biollante
3. Godzilla vs. Destroroyah
2. Godzilla 2000
1. Godzilla Final Wars
I despise the US movies.
2) Invasion of the Astro-Monster
1) Gojira
Showa is king!
awesome show. Only I must disagree about Final War. A classic. Top 5! But I really enjoyed the show. Do the non-godzilla movies.
Frogs
You haven’t seen a Godzilla movie until you watch Godzilla vs Charles Barkley...Google it...
Godzilla vs Bambi.
