hello I have just started to play in Belfast and trying to get to grips with the fairway wood. This video is very helpful I will keep practising ! Thank you
I could not hit a fairway wood off the ground without topping it. I took these tips up to the driving range and practiced over and over again. It’s worked! I’m hitting some lovely shots with my 5 wood now. My local club is made up of more long holes than short so this has really helped! Thanks for such clear, well explained instructions.
Amazing video, I make all those mistakes you mention, and this is the first time someone captures them so nicely in one single video, brilliant! Can't wait to go practice all that good stuff now! Thanks Jon!
Thank you so much for the tips. I have a problem with hitting that club off the deck. I will be trying your tips this weekend at the driving range and look forward to seeing the results. Muse
I have been having this problem for the last few weeks and as soon as I saw your video I knew exactly what my problem has been . Thank you so much Jon , and all the best for 2020. Greetings from Queensland.
Thanks for the clear and excellent instructions, I seem to struggle especially with 3W hitting too much of the ground ? Any thing other than practice brushing the ground ?Thanks again
Number one reason people can't hit fairway wood is they swing too hard, thinking this has to be long I have to crush it. You can get a wood to go 200 yards with a half swing, work your way up to a full swing, go easy for sweet contact. Keep your balance, feet well apart.
Agree with contact being key and building up swing is a good practice but I think with the right method, I would hit it as hard as you can in balance. I find more speed = more commitment from me and generally better results
@@TruGolfAcademy yes but those who struggle with woods should back off until they get good contact and feel good about woods again, then let her rip :)
It depends on whether your shifting weight laterally to much or swinging out to in. But a simple tip on range would be striking off a high tee to encourage more of a sweeping move. Happy to help with an online lesson, let me know if you would like some info?
I've found that if you can line the ball up equidistant to your feet then the ball will fly. If your address feels awkward, you're getting it right. Played this am and topped only one as opposed to about 15.
Do you mean playing the ball in the centre of your stance? If so, I would try moving the ball more forwards but focus on getting pressure to the front foot in the downswing and extending your arms into impact
Off the deck or tee? Off a tee we would want the same arm extension but upper body generally a little tilted behind the ball due to sweeping off the tee
Pls ref timeline 6.20-6.25... The lead arm or the forearm was bent comfortably at the elbow in the back swing (which is indeed natural)... But is it ok ?? Pls comment.. thanks
I can’t keep my lead arm dead straight, I broke it as a kid. But it’s fine for a little bend, just wouldn’t want the hands to get too close to the trail shoulder.
Nice, easy to understand instruction! New subscriber here... from Texas! Would love to see some course management videos. At 62 years old, I can no longer hit 300+ yard drives...( 30 years ago I was competing in Amateur long drive contests. )...and I am still struggling with my long Irons and Hybrids. I carried a 4 handicap for years, and I still have a very good short game that gets me out of trouble quite a bit. But, I have friends my age that are still playing very well...of course without my physical ailments...but...I think if I could learn to hit my long Irons and Hybrids without the huge slice...I might be able to lower my handicap down to at least a 10 or 11, from the 16 handicap I am currently holding.
Many thanks Larry, welcome to my channel and thanks for watching. Hope the videos can help drop that handicap! I’ve done a few course management videos as well as course Vlogs where I’ve discussed course management tips. Take a look through my video library when you get a chance.

Dear Jon... Great simple and effective instructions for us social golfers 👍 BTW, you also have a fluid & simple swing & IMHO, quite identical to Sir Nick Faldo's swing 🏆... A very effective & rock solid golf swing 🥇
Hi Craig, I have a video coming out in a couple of weeks on simplifying BP with all clubs. 3 wood under logo of left chest would be good, a ball inside lead heel. Could vary for trajectory and shot shape intended however
4:53 of a 8 min video before he even hits a ball. Ya ever see a Phil Mickelson tutorial video? This is the problem, this is the solution. Boom...Right to the point.
Check strike location, if toe hits will hook more. Then if starting left and bending further sort face first. If body stalls hands take over a shot the face. Feel body rotates soon
Where am I going with my woods when I look where the ball has marked the face I see ball marks top of the face bottom of the face middle side of the face what the hell is happening
Michael Britton FWIW I would suggest that your arms and body are getting out of synch with each other. Also, for a very quick fix, make sure you are looking at the ball when you hit it .... you might just be swiping at it, looking at the ball as you hit it helps the body and arms naturally hit solidly at the ball.
@@richtfingers thank you so very much for your reply great I'll get on the driving range tomorrow and give it try at last I seem to some sensible comment many thanks
Hi Michael, most mis-strikes come from a loss / change in posture. I.e early extension will generally cause heel strike but players often compensate by pulling arms in or rising the handle and strike out of the toe. I would need to really see your swing to actually help, let me know I can send info on online lessons?
This is where I'm losing strokes... it's ssoo stupid. Driver is kong and finds a lot of fairways my putts are under 36 a round. My chipping around the green gets me up znd down on average 2 to 3 tines a round. I bomb one, duff a 3W followed by a 5H duff. Last tound, I blew every par 5... probably 8 shots on 4 par 5's. 2 weeks Ill have it nipped in the bud.
@@TruGolfAcademy Ok, no need to agree. Here's my unsolicited observations. I'm sure you play very well, but you have some power leaks. Your head moves off the ball much more than your CG (belly button area) while your left heel stays down - upper body sway. If your going keep the left heel down, no need to move your head so far off the ball in the backswing. Good shoulder turn, but that bent left arm at the top robs you of some pop. You might need to move the ball forward to hit a high one with this -> Keep the left arm straighter, get your sternum over the ball or just slightly in front at impact and time the hit with the left hip snapping backwards. Get all the weight to the outside of the left heel - the front of your left shoe should curl up more on the follow through. You'll be hitting more with your body weight and compress the ball more.
Okay thanks. Don’t know what this has to do with my video subject on topping fairway woods. On a separate not I can’t straighten my left arm as broke as a kid and keeping it dead straight won’t increase speed. In fact it can act as an extra lever. Obviously if completely collapsed and creating a throwaway that would be a different story. Cheers
@@TruGolfAcademy I don't hit it as well when I keep the left locked straight throughout the swing either. Some people do though - those that have elbows that lock a bit past flat (180*) without adding tension, like Tiger. Sergio Garcia goes a bit over 180* for example - I believe it helps with consistency. Some have elbows that don't quite get to flat 180* and for them trying to do so only adds tension. I'm in the latter camp also. Your swing is smooth and controlled - on the course, that's better than swinging out of your socks like I tend to do. I've found that FITTING the shaft flex of the FW woods is key. Many have sets that match steel irons shafts with whippy graphite FW woods and it's hard to adjust tempo.
Nice guy, good advice I’m sure. But all you instructors want to talk talk talk. Put a dozen balls out and demo what you’re saying instead of talking the entire video.
Okay Chris, will take on board. Trying to demo more early in the video but obviously needs explaining and demonstrating moves slowly, checkpoints etc. Thanks for comments mate
Thanks for feedback, I’ve definitely reduced talking in more recent videos, more demos, more to the point etc. check out a recent one and let me know what you think.
Watched many videos on Fairway Woods and yours has been the most pleasure to watch. Great presentation and quality tuition!

Hope it helps, keep up the practice 👍🏻
Thanks. This is so helpful. I don’t think I’ve been extending my arms. Can’t wait to try it.

Thanks Fred. I hope you’re keeping safe over there 🤞🏻
I always have to fight with myself to move the ball back in my stance. Something about a wood that makes you want to hit it off your front foot.
Great explanation and demonstration.
GREAT TIPS GREAT VALUE FOR hitting fair WAY woods
Great lesson you make it easy to understand 😀👍⛳️
great info

Thanks Robert. Some drill hitting short shots from just pre impact, feeling the hands rise and lead side extend would certainly help!

How did you get on Gerry?
I don't top a fairway wood anymore I use a 2 iron instead it's much easier to hit.
Thanks from 🇻🇪. Any chance you can show shots in slow mo as well?
That me Duncan, I do in many of my videos. Will make sure I do more regularly 👍🏻

gosh I needed this and looking forward to working on it. I've actually taken my 3 and 5 wood out of my bag for poor application on my part
Hope it helps! Let me know who you get on!
TruGolf Academy still hitting better with my 4 rescue. Maybe because I had it cut down to my 3 iron shaft length.
Lol don’t blame you
Clear instructions thank and your local to me aswell 👍
Very welcome Steve
Can you please address ball position in a bit more detail?
Just for a fair ward wood? I’ve done videos on BP for all clubs. 3 wood I would play 1” inside lead heel
Thx. Good stuff. Just took my driver out of the bag and measured all the clubs.

I take your point and do work on it. However to be fair I hit two shots after just 23 seconds!?
Cant hit fairway woods at all the aka for the tips
My issue is snap hooking my fairway woods.

Jon , I wouldn’t have trouble with this shot if I had a lie like that. ;) good vid.
The tee hadn’t been cut I’m afraid! 😂 same advice!
Wish you’d been on my bag today when I suddenly started fatting everything, Jon...

How about in the fairway, not the green
I’m not sure what you mean Alan? I did film on a tee box but similar to a fairway cut height not a green
