    I've had an EV for 7 years. I've fast charged it at a public charger 4 times in 7 years. Really how often do you go more than 250 miles?

  • @enoch1680
    @enoch1680 2 месяца назад +43

    I leave every morning with a "full tank". So the time I am inconvenienced by charging is 5 seconds when I get home and plug in and 5 seconds in the morning when I unplug to go to work. The actual charge time I am sleeping.
    When I travel, the charge stops are about 15 minutes which is about the time needed for stretch and restroom breaks. I can do those while it charges. But filling with gas, I have to do those things AND THEN go fill it up while the family sits in the car twiddling their thumbs. Full disclosure, I would estimate my total stop time on a BEV trip is about 1/2 hour longer per day on trips. So it is a minor inconvenience. However, in many cases, the chargers are located in places with healthier food so it is a win as I don't have to make one stop to charge and another to eat.
    Finally, total time screwing around with all care and feeding is dramatically less with a BEV. No oil changes, far less brake work and rare inconvenience related to "fuel". So all in all, BEV is way more convenient than ICE.

      Food for thought - you can extend the life of the battery by actually charging a small amount more regularly.
      EG the battery will maintain its maximum capacity for longer if you’re regularly charging from 55% to 75%, rather than doing a big charge from 25% to 100% irregularly.
      Then again if you’re on a 2 year lease, fuck it do whatever lol

    • @SDGreg
      @SDGreg 2 месяца назад +3

      The problem is that for high speed charging we really don't want people parking and leaving their car for a couple of hours. We want people to plug in and get charged up to about 80-90% and then move their car so someone else can charge it. For most newer cars this can work out to about 20-40 mins. About enough time for someone to get food and eat and use the bathroom at a typical fast food place.

    • @NNFaNRacing
      @NNFaNRacing 2 месяца назад

      The ones who figure that out, also have to determine how to bring an industrial sized electrical installation into an already built shopping center, and which charging standard to go with. If they get it right though they could certainly make a lot of money.

      At your workplace is the ideal for people who can't charge overnight - park your car in the morning, swipe your company ID card to tell the charger who you are, plug in the slow charger, and go to work. Get billed by your company at cost for the electricity you consume at the end of the month. Or companies could offer it for free as a company perk.
      There's an assumption that everything needs to be "fast" whereas lots of "slow" works just as well. And the added benefit of slow chargers is that they don't require huge investment in additional electrical installations.

      @NNFaNRacing I don't know that it's bringing in electricity on the scale you're thinking. There are charging facilities at several shopping centers where I live and more going in. The space taken is minimal, you only lose a couple of feet of the length of a parking space for the unit, unless they're sited on the periphery of the parking area. Then no space is lost.

  • @Sphere723

    Just from a fundamental engineering perspective, EV charging infrastructure is much simpler and safer than liquid fuels infrastructure. Mounting a glorified transformer and hooking it up to the electrical grid is simple and can be done almost anywhere. Getting liquid fuels from a refinery, and then safely transporting them, storing them underground and pumping them into vehicles takes a lot of sophisticated construction and equipment and large numbers of truck drivers, pump inspectors, hell, even store clerks. It's really inefficient.
    The whole argument wouldn't make any sense except that there's a large liquid fuels infrastructure already in place.

      I have done trips from PA to Florida multiple times. It's just about learning what is different. The car will charge faster the less charge it actually has and slow down as the battery fills up. So instead of charging to full every time you stop, you charge with enough to get you to the next stop with about 15% battery to be safe. This allows you to charge faster, you have more stops, but they much quicker. And the car does all the calculating for you, you don't even have to think about it.

These are places that you do spend 30 minutes to an hour at once a week, if you are unable to charge at home that is. Yet most every home the country has hydro so how would it be so hard put in the infrastructure for hydro? It's not like we have to truck it in? We just have to hang new wires off a few existing poles and poof! An EV charging station. BTW. You can deliver very high voltages with low current over relatively thin wires ( wire size depends on current capacity not voltage, think of those high tension towers that cross the country. High voltage, Low current. ), use a transformer to change that high voltage/low current to a low voltage and higher current. Happens all the time. It's simple electrical theory.

    Cars aren't the future anyways. Are there going to be cars in the future-- of course. But bicycles and trains will get a higher mode share than it gets today in the United States. How do I know this? Because we simply can't afford to maintain all the roads we've already built. Our development pattern of strip malls and suburbs is not sustainable. It costs more to the municipality to maintain than it brings in with tax revenue. In the future cities will need to adopt micromobility and rapid public transit. Cities will also need to be denser which makes it easier to walk. Electric cars are better than gas cars but good policy looks like lessening our subsidy to cars.

    Most gas stations are in urban areas where there are thousands of other possible sites for charging, including at home.
    EV drivers don't typically go somewhere to charge as they would in an ICE vehicle.
    We charge mostly at home when we are sleeping. We might charge while parked at the mall, at a restaurant, or any number of places where we charge while doing other things.

I have a 60A/240V circuit in my house for my Tesla and can charge up to 48 amps. I schedule the charging at night and the car is always ready in the morning. So I never go to a gas station and pay about a quarter of what my gasolene costs would have been. It only takes a couple of seconds to plug in or un plug. The time, effort, filth, fumes, crime, and the weather are not issues in my garage.
    The irony is that I spent hours of time and too much money at gas stations and people think you waste time charging....

    Some alternative hybrids only use gas fuel for a generator to recharge batteries for an electric engine. This saves the cost of having 2 engines (one internal combustion, and one electric) in hybrids, while still extending the range when plugging in to recharge isn't convenient. Someday, some cars may have batteries that can be swapped out at service stations for fully charged batteries.

    Jesus.. people don’t think…, what about the required infrastructure… a gas station need tanks… , charging need serious power supply (almost dedicated transformer/ sub station) to do in timely fashion …

      When I had my charger installed, the electrician installed a new circuit in my existing breaker box and ran a dedicated line over to the wall closest to where I park my car then installed a, exterior NEMA-1450 plug. It was pretty darn simple and easy.

      The narcissism of it all…, thinking as far as ya nose eh… all about your situation.
      Tell me.. when half the houses in your neighbourhood double their required supply capacity, the local gas stations now require another transformer to supply those fast chargers… it is all Kw & Mw of power… which is wonderful, but it doesn’t come from thin air..
      it requires vast$ on new sub stations n ditty great thick expensive HV copper cables, switch rooms etc etc,
      Most electrical dept around the globe are already struggling keeping the systems at capacity let alone increasing it..
      It is an effective doubting of many local networks capacity EV charging.. particularly fast charging requires in high power capacity

      Do you think the electricity is everywhere just sitting in the ground and when they add a Mw of fadt chargers to a gas station they just push poles in the dirt.., or indeed the your local suburban power was build way the f over capacity.. just for shits n giggles… before they could have envision these kinds of power loads…
      Who’s buying for the 2nd most expensive part of EV infrastructure .., not the EV owners!
      And the most expensive part when be getting rid of the battery/ clean up of fallout
      People have been sold a lie.., nothing is as simple as the boyhood dreams out Elons arse

      "Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, clearly has a strong vision of an EV-friendly America, but he is well aware there's a bit of mental adjustment people will need to do first. Buttigieg told Car and Driver on Wednesday how much he liked the Ford Mustang Mach-E EV his security detail was just issued, and noted that, along with the keys, they were handed a gas card-standard issue for a government vehicle. "I love the fact that we’re never going to have to use that gas card," he said. "Unlike with gas, we can fill it up right here in the basement at DOT headquarters."

    I can’t “fuel” my car at home. I don’t own a home with a garage. That would take an income many fold higher than mine. My apartment complex is small and full of working poor like me. We’re not getting any EV stations any time soon. Note, not all Americans are comfortably well-off suburbanites. A way-too-common mistake made by Democrats 😑.

He literally is working to address your problems and trying to fix it but you ignored it. It's a way-too-common mistake made by working class voters who vote Republicans.
