  • Hello, in this video a test run an OS MAX .46 AXII glow engine, or nitro engine. This engine was in a bad rc plane crash but survived with only minor damage to the carburetor needle valve assembly, which got ripped out of the carburetor. I want to use this engine for my next RC plane kit build which will be the Balsa USA Smoothie 40. But before I start with that rc plane build log, I want to test run the OS 46 AXII with the new carburetor to make sure it runs. In this video I install the new carburetor and mount the engine on Mayatech test bench or mount. I use Morgan cool power nitro fuel and a Master Airscrew 11-6 propeller. I run the engine and check the RPMS and settings for the proper running.
    I have been building, flying, crashing, modifying, and repairing radio control planes for many years and enjoy sharing what I do with the radio control plane community so I started RC Plane Tech channel.
    My methods of building rc plane kits, maintenance, running engines and equipment, and flying are not the only way to do things. I always recommend checking other sources and learning from others. I do not consider myself an "expert" but just a guy who has been doing this stuff for a while and enjoys sharing what I know and learning from others.
    I fly with Futaba radio equipment, OS Max engines and Saito engines, Master Airscrew Propellers and APC propellers, Sullivan RC fuel tanks and hardware, Dubro RC fuel tanks and hardware and typically run Morgan Omega and Powermaster glow fuels. I fly ARF rc planes, but I also really like to build rc plane kits including Balsa USA RC kits, House of Balsa, Royal and Marutaka RC kits, Sig RC Kits. I use Monokote and other RC covering fabrics.

    That aluminum spinner is what saved the carb from being ripped out of the case. That saved you from having to replace the case. Although it looks like the spinner is toast.

      I agree, the spinner probably saved it, good point.

    Hi, sorry I don’t know off hand. I did run a master airscrew 12-6 in the past and it drop the rpms prob into the mid 9k range. Which was to be expected, but I found back then the plane I was flying at the time ( Great Planes Escapade) flew better with the smaller 11-6 with higher rpm. Sorry I can’t comment more about it.

      Yep, but be careful hand starting. I try to use a starter or stick. Ive have my finger sliced open starting by hand.. be careful. And yes, once broken in correctly these engines run great!

    Really well made video. I enjoy all your videos, they are so interesting and really educational. Thanks. P.S, I don't have an OS 46ax, but I do have two OS 55ax engines, one on a Kyosho Calmato Sports 40 and the other is on a Hangar 9 P51 Mustang 40. They are good running two strokes.

    The engine 'sags' for a split second when you whack the throttle open, your low speed screw still needs a bit of fine tuning! (Its hard to say whether it was a lean or rich bog, but I reckon it needs another 1/8 of a turn in or out)

    Great video! You know your stuff regarding glow engines.
    The 46ax 2 is a fantastic engine and super easy to use and tune. Typical OS quality.
    Regarding the carburettor retaining screws, I like to put a dab of loctite 242 so they don’t vibrate out, which they tend to do overtime, don’t ask me how I know!
    Just subscribed do wil check out the other videos on your channel!

      Thanks for the comment. Loctite is a good suggestion for the carb bolts, I use it on the engine mounts and landing gear bolts also. Cant go wrong there.

    So any idea rpm's on an APC 12 x 6 Prop ?.

  • @rperry70
    @rperry70 2 года назад +2

    Throw a 10-6 APC on it when you fly. Get the thing in it's power band. Sounds rich as well. Should be happy in the 14,000 rpm range. 11-6 is just too much load for it to be happy.

    • @JamesRCPlaneTech
      @JamesRCPlaneTech  2 года назад +1

      That Prop size is something to think about.

    • @shelbyseelbach9568
      @shelbyseelbach9568 2 года назад +1

      According to the manufacturer, the 11x6 is about right in the middle of the suggested prop range, but maybe you know better than the manufacturer?
      Prop sizes straight from the manual, 10.5x6, 11x6-8, 12x6-7.

    • @donrichter3523
      @donrichter3523 Год назад

      Umm…yes smartass. Most of the props are too big to reduce noise, not increase performance. I’d run a 10x6 as well.

      I tried to fly my 46 AX II with 11x4, 10x8 and 10x6 props. The 10x6 works really good, and the engine feels to run more freely. Would You suggest to remove the baffle?...

    I have the same engine, I put 1.5 turns of the main needle... and the engine does not start, what to do?

    • @JamesRCPlaneTech
      @JamesRCPlaneTech  Год назад +1

      Well. If its a brand new engine and you are breaking in, the high speed or main needle should be set rich at 2-2.5 turns open. And the throttle open about 1/4. So try opening it up another turn. Check your glow plug, should be very hot, bright. If in doubt, try replacing glow plug and make sure battery power is good. Are you getting fuel? Check that fuel is flowing from tank. Hopefully you have the manual, if not you can search online and get a free download. If its an older engine, for sure check the glow plug. Good luck. Let me know if any of those things help.

  • @donrichter3523
    @donrichter3523 2 года назад +2

    I expected a better performance than that on an 11-6, at least another 1000 rpm. I’m guessing you didn’t remove the baffle from the muffler.

    • @JamesRCPlaneTech
      @JamesRCPlaneTech  2 года назад +2

      You are right. The baffle is not removed. That’s something I will check when I get this kit ready, to see if that will kick up my rpm.

    very scary seeing you standing in line with that propellor to adjust the needle valve. You said it was an old propellor that could easily shed a blade. You need to learn to adjust that mixture with your left hand, standing behind where the wing might be, for your own safety.

    • @JamesRCPlaneTech
      @JamesRCPlaneTech  2 дня назад

      Great point and advice. I usually do adjust from the rear, but obviously here I didn’t and its good to point that out. Safety is always the most important thing and I appreciate your comment, it will help others as well. “If you see something, say something “ thats what we all need to do.
