    some locals were taking pics of the tram because it’s a novelty even for us! The tram was ‘restored’ after many years of it not working, so for many people it is the first time seeing it. It’s a very iconic part of the Caballito neighborhood too!

    With the buses in the different liveries, the trams, and the Subte, Buenos Aires is definitely an underrated transit city! Pyongyang has a big tram network! Four lines with a total length of 53.5 km/33 miles. Before the war from 1950 to 1953, there were three tramway systems in the entire Korean Peninsula: one each in Seoul, Busan and Pyongyang. However Seoul and Busan got rid of their historic tramways for the automobile in the 1960s, while Pyongyang's was destroyed in US attacks, and was decided to be rebuilt from scratch. The new system began operations in 1989.
    The network has three main lines, and a smaller fourth one. The fourth one was created to connect the Pyongyang Metro station at Kim Il-sung University (Samhung) to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, the mausoleum of my father and grandpa. A Pyongyang Metro station was once at the palace’s site (Kwangmyong), but once it became a mausoleum in 1995, it became sacred ground and thus it was closed with a new tram line built. Most of the network uses Tatra trams made in the former Czechoslovakia but unlike the rest of the network, the tram that runs on this Kumsusan line uses a Swiss tram built in the late 40s that was retired from the Zurich network in 1994 where it was purchased by us the next year.

  • @agme8045
    @agme8045 3 месяца назад +3

    11:40 when you get on the bus in Buenos Aires, you have to tell the driver what station you are going to stop at, they will charge you accordingly to the distance you travel. So it’s not uncommon for people to ask the bus driver whether they stop/go to a certain address.

    The name of the neighborhood is Caballito, which means little horse! The bust at 12:39 is the one and only Eva Perón aka Evita! She was First Lady of Argentina from 1946 to 1952 who championed trade unions and women's suffrage! She ran the Ministries of Labor and Health, and founded and ran the charitable Eva Perón Foundation too! After she passed at age 33 in 1952, she was given the title of "Spiritual Leader of the Nation".
    Emilio Mitre station is named after an Argentine Lieutenant General who participated in the Paraguayan War in the late 1860s. Basically both Brazil and Argentina were hostile to Paraguay, Brazil helped topple the Uruguayan government in favor of a pro-Brazil government, Paraguay saw this as a threat to the regional balance and went to war with Brazil, Argentina refused to let Paraguayan troops marched through so Paraguay declared war on them too, Argentina and Brazil saw this as an opportunity to take disputed land with Paraguay, so they and the pro-Brazil Uruguayan government formed a Triple Alliance and attacked the Paraguayans. His brother Bartolomé Mitre was president of Argentina from 1862 to 1868.

    If you enjoy old trams, Milan is definitely worth visiting! Unlike this and many other old trams, their 1920's class 1500 run in regular passenger service, serving commuters all day every day. They're quite ubiquitious; the benefit being that you won't have to fight tourists/foamers for a spot like what happened here. And yes, they're the oldest remaining trams in passenger service in the world.

    So Buenos Aires first got trams in 1863 through horse-drawn trams circulating the city as a feeder service to the trains. Then they got urban tramways in 1870 by pioneer Federico Lacroze and his brother Julio. The Anglo-Argentine Tramways Company was founded in 1876 and operated lines totaling 875 km (544 mi) in length from then all the way to 1952. They were the ones that built an underground tram line that would become Line A of the Subte in 1913! I don't blame you for not being able to understand him at 7:42. Rioplatense Spanish is VERY different from the other Spanish varieties! Heavily influenced by Italian and its dialects as many Italians settled in Argentina and Uruguay in the 19th century.
    For example, in the majority of Spanish-speaking countries, the word for pineapple is piña, and this word comes from the fact that Europeans called it the pinecone of the Indies or "piña des Indes" so its name became just piña. In Argentina and Uruguay on the other hand, the word for pineapple is Ananas, a word that originally comes from a Tupi word (from Brazil) that means "excellent fruit", and this is the word the majority of languages uses (or based off of) whether it's German, Arabic, Georgian, Hindi, Swahili, Polish, Maltese, Turkish, Amharic, Urdu, Tajik, Greek, Russian, and of course Italian! Ananas is the name of the pineapple's genus!

    no way you've been through my neighbourhood Caballito (little horse), tourist usually go only around la boca - puerto madero - microcentro - retiro - recoleta - palermo and maybe belgrano (basically the majority of the coast) but not really inside the city which is huge. Maybe there aren't very important tourist attractions but I think the sole atmosphere of some neighbourhoods, plus some museums are worth visiting. San Fransisco has the historic fleet of streetcars that run on Market Street and the Embarcadero, including the PCC cars, some wooden cars from Milan and for special occasions they’ll pull out the “boat” like open top car from Blackpool (the central “mast” holds up the trolley pole.) Plus of course there’s the cable cars and the Muni trams (I was there in 2012, the Muni trams had moving steps to go from high platforms to low or no platforms.)
    The only cooler trams were the old Soviet made trams we rode in Sofia, Bulgaria back in 2018 (there were newer trams being phased in but not on the line we rode.)

      Milan, Italy, also has many trams from the 1920s still in everyday revenue service. They even sold some in the US to San Francisco, San Jose and Saint Louis for their heritage tram lines: given that they were built following the original American design by Peter Witt, their style really fits the aesthetics of those cities.

      A couple people mentioned that - we covered the whole system without any issues with the camera, thankfully. Is the issue that we look like tourists or just that it's an expensive thing that can be stolen?

      Can help if you need any info with historical stuff, its all out there on the internet anyway, ofcourse there's a few novelties such as line A and lovely line C and the nearly century old tunnel extensions where you have a super old vs new stations along side each other, such as line A's primera junta tunnel to puan which was built 97 years later, or the connection from line B to E Wich was also built 80 years apart and is the best connection in the entire subway,
      Aside from the age of the system is also one of the few subways in the world where you have some unrelated stations with the same name and conecting stations that have different names because much like in New Yorkers porteños have the city's grid baked inside their brains and the subway heavily reflects that more often using street names instead of landmarks and since conecting stations often intersect each other's streets and parallel lines intersect the same streets this quirky is as far as I'm aware only present in New York's numbered street stations. Also since Buenos Aires uses a standard address numbering scheme passengers information signage also include the block's numbering, which for the radial lines pretty much tells you how far away you are from 9 de Julio avenue, the entire system's station signage includes it which is also pretty unique
