Solo Mountain Camp: Why I activated my PLB

  • In this solo hiking and camping adventure, I climb to the head of Rough Creek in the Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve and Victoria Forest Park, in New Zealand, with my dog Indi. We enjoyed a beautiful day, and after a huge effort to retrieve firewood, were able to enjoy a small campfire while we watched the sun set. Over a campfire chat I share my story of having to seek help for a friend who injured herself on a recent hiking trip with me. Emergency services asked me to activate my Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) and this gave the rescue helicopter an accurate position to come and get my friend from our mountain location. A huge thank you to the team from Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue for their care of my friend after her injury. They need donations to continue to provide the high level of service that they do. You can find a link to donate via their website. www.airrescue.....
Please note that Indi has a DOC permit to walk the Lake Christabel Tracks (that Rough Creek Track is part of) with me. There is contradicting information on the DOC website regarding dogs on this track. If you are a New Zealander wanting to do this walk with your dog I recommend you do your own research regarding this.

It’s so nice to not have to hear the rain on the tarp … it’s ok if it’s for a few minutes of a video but when it’s the whole time, it’s actually not pleasant. Thank you for the relief. 🙏🏻💖

You are welcome. If I could get mother nature to do what I wanted I would plan the ultimate camping weather, clear and crisp for the walk in, then a beautiful sunset, then evening rain, raining all night, then waking to a clear sunny day again. That way it would just be a bit on rain and not too much.

I have a suggestion. When you cut down 2 dead trees, drag both trees back to camp before you cut them up. Less trips and the ground wiil sustain some of the weight. ❤

Nice idea, I like it. This trip was a grab hold of grass and plants and drag myself up the mountain type of trip so I needed my hands free, but I could definitely do that on flatter terrain, for sure.

On this trip I took in 1 litre in my drink bottle, and then a 2litre water bladder that I filled at the last stream. I also drunk from the rivers. It was more than enough for Indi and I and a bit for a small hot water bottle and to put out the fire. Usually I don't carry more than 1 litre as there are plenty of rivers in NZ. If I know there won't be water at my camp though, I fill up the 2litre as well. Just makes things very heavy for that portion of the journey.

I find food to be such an important part of a trip. When you have had a hard day food is everything! Just getting to sit down to a nice meal is so rewarding. I cut corners on this trip but usually I think it through very carefully and make sure I take fresh tasty ingredients, things that are quick and easy to prepare, so that I can really enjoy my meal.

I once set up camp in a huge empty campground and went for a bushwalk only to come back to someone set up right in front of me blocking the view. They could have camped a hundred meters away in either direction but no! Right in front of me.

Hello Cathy, greetings from the Tararuas, watching you climb back to your tent made me smile. I have done that so many times and it never gets any easier. I have even done two trips down to the bush line and back up again just to get enough firewood. Never had to use my PLB yet, had it for so long now, even had a change of battery. So, when do we use the PLB, you ask? I fell down the mountain a few years back and obtained 6 gashes and one fractured sternum. It was winter, it was dark, and it was raining. I was with another person, they wanted to activate the PLB, I said no, and I didn't want to put anyone else at risk. So, I walked out (very slowly). In hindsight, I was silly not to activate it. I genuinely thought that it was my problem and had to deal with it, but now I would, older and wiser, Enjoyed the video. ATB Cheers from the mighty Tararuas. 😊😊

Ha ha, glad to know you could have a little laugh and know the feeling of that mission to get firewood when you have dogged determination and refuse to give up. Oh yes, we like to be self-sufficient don't we! As someone else commented ... 'it can be cumbersome'. There is a balance between being tough and knowing when to ask for help. I don't think it's easy.

I'm surprised you can fit everything into one backpack. I feel like I would need 2!

Ha ha, yes I think that each time I pack it, squish, squash, squish. No space goes unwasted. It is made extra tricky with taking extra things for Indi, I have to say.

Good to know the whole PLB thing work. I have a PLB and a GPS with in reach and when I was hiking with my wife and daughter and my wife slipped and broke her leg I didnt have them with me, We man handle my wife down the track about 3 or 4 km . Took about 2 -3 hours . The main thing was that in many places the track was only one person wide and even though it was daylight it was still dangerous for the injured and uninjured.

    • @adventureot
      @adventureot  5 месяцев назад

Oh yes, single track would be really hard. That is just what I was imagining in this situation, trying to man-handle an injured person over narrow steep, slippery ground, whilst trying not to injure your back or slip and fall. Not easy. Sounds like you and your family would have had a rough walk out.

Oh my gosh that does sound like a record. I am glad for your wife, it is horrible sitting in ED after already going through a nasty situation like she did.

You’re lucky that even though you pay a little extra tax for the rescue service it’s free to the citizens. Here in the States it’s up to the individual. If you don’t have a special insurance policy that covers a rescue you pay out of pocket and that can be very costly! Tens of thousands of dollars! Enjoyed the video! Always love seeing Indi! She’s such a sweet girl!!

I guess there is no perfect system, but I think we have a pretty good one when it comes to access to acute health care and emergency services. Thanks for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed having Indi on this trip. I think she loved keeping warm and dry.

Yes boggy ground can be so unpredictable. We have thick tussock grass and that can hide what is lurking underneath.

I think I recall watching that video of hers (maybe 12 months ago??). If I recall correctly it took her hours to cross a small area because it was so boggy. I recall the emotion of it. Not fun.
