  • A fantastic version by the writer of the song! John D. wrote it and recorded it first in 1960. Here he is seen performing it for BBC-2 (John D. Loudermilk & his music, 1984).

Heard this song by many artists, such as Lou Rawls, Eric Burdon, Edgar Winters and now hearing by the singer/writer of this song makes it the best. He sings it like he wrote it. No frills, blues, drive, just pure country/folk.

As a WAR fan, I'm partial to Eric Burdon with War's version of Mr. Loudermilk's 'Tobacco Road'. But I must give a tip of the hat, hive five, a toast.... all the deserved accolades to the great John D. Loudermilk for his originality. Thank you JefFrietkot for posting and not letting us forget where it all started. Peace.

Soulful, bluesy, idiosyncratic performer and writer. Good singer and guitarist. A revelation to me, after all these years.

One of the most underrated songwriters in the US. He is also the composer of "Windy and
Warm". Its incredible that he wrote it about "trailer parks" but the great Lou Rawls reinterpreted it as an inner city anthem. Its amazing what you can do with great material.

I always love to see the writer sing his own song. However, I think the Nashville Teens
did the definitive version of this song. Thank you for posting this classic.

This version sounds odd when you're familiar with the better-known ones, especially the Nashville Teens. The way he runs the lines together kind of throws you, when he doesn't pause in the expected places. But...it's his song, and he can do it any way he wants to!

Its said when you 1st hear a song you like you never prefer another version more than the 1st! I beleive that to be true, in only about 4 cases have i liked another version AS MUCH but NEVER more. I 1st heard this by The Nashville Teens, it was their 1st U.K hit reaching number 6 on the 9-7-64, The only other decent chart position they reached of the 5 they had (excluding the re-release of their last The Hard Way) was the follow up Google Eye (#10, 22-10-64).

while this is a tremendous version by the original composer, it doesn`t hold a candle to burdon/war`s take: as with "house of the rising sun", eric burdon took the tune and made it his own and it is his version by which the tune will be remembered: in a word, genius.
postscript: oh yes, spooky tooth did an, er...extremely passable version of "tobacco road", too...

Pure magic. What a great song - interpreted by so many in so many different ways but his own version beats all others for me. (Dave Lee Roth's is easily the worst)

It came out in 1960 and charted nowhere in the US, local or nationwide. Sales must have been very little. Only charted very modestly in Australia in '60, but only because of the B-side.
So chance of 0,00001% that a 1960 footage ever has been made.

  • @DavidJHarrisonEssex

I love hearing about originals, particularly when you've assumed for years another artist was the original. I'd love to hear this sung from 1960 rather that 1984 as that was when it was released, anyone got it or know where I can find it?
