- With a sad heart Pilot & Co-Pilot onboard this Lockheed 12A Electra Junior were killed Saturday afternoon June 15th 2024 when the aircraft crashed shortly after departing from Chino Airport, officials said. My thoughts & prayers go out to the families, friends & co-workers.
Blue skies and tailwinds my friend R.I.P. I always enjoyed talking with Frank Wright over the years at the museum and he always treated me with such respect and kindness. Pilot-in-Command on this flight was Michael “Mike” Gilles & Yanks Chief Operating Officer Frank Wright.
They both will be missed.
This twin-engine Lockheed 12A crashed around 12:35 p.m., the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement. A spokesperson for the Chino Valley Fire District confirmed there were two fatalities in the incident. No additional people were onboard the plane, and no one on the ground was injured.

Dan Gryder, a retired Delta Air Lines pilot and RUclips personality who investigates aircraft accidents. In a social media post thanking first responders for their quick action, Gryder's adult son Dylan verified that his father was on board the aircraft.
This accident marks the second accident involving an Electra Junior in the span of three days.
Three people were on board the 1936 Electra Junior when it crashed during an attempt to land at Seven Lakes Airport (62GA) around 8.p.m. EDT, the FAA said. They were airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment of their injuries.
UPDATE: The tailwheel appears unlocked in the landing video, this can happen even if you have the lever in the correct position as the locking pin is held in with a bungee cord that can fail.

Sadly they left the flaps fully extended on takeoff. Hate it that the crew and aircraft were lost. Gotta pay attention to those check lists and cockpit procedures or you’ll get in trouble.

They departed with the flaps fully down, still under investigation Very sad 😢😢
From the pic right when they lost control, they had the flaps full down on take off! They had a pic where it was statically parked and the flaps were full down. Looks like they never retracted the flaps before take off, big flaps, lots of drag.
Yes you are correct the flaps fully down and this aircraft can not gain any altitude in this configuration or stay level. Very sad 😢😢

According to a witness, the plane took off with fully deployed flaps.
@@jamesbronson8713 Gryder said they deployed them to keep prop wash from the crowd and then forgot to retract them when they went straight to take-off...

Hi, Ed. Is this the same 12A Electra Junior used in "Amelia" starring Hillary Swank and Richard Gere? Just curious.
As far as know this is not the same exact one but same model.

No this is NOT the same electra that was used in the film Amelia. That airplane is out in Georgia.

Eye witness said basically (the electra had taken off) she slipped suddenly to the left, then the Lwing appeared to have contacted an obstruction, the plane nosed down into the ground with L wing bursting into flames.

From what I was told at the crash sight they lost an engine but this could all change & a Big Thank you for correcting me on the date.

New evidence is coming out that they departed with the flaps down.

The wheel landing at that point with a small bounce you got to get those mains on its toes and as I see it rolling out . This is a awesome aircraft

No, she flew the big Electra, this plane is the smaller Electra Junior.

Problem identified as attempted take-off with full flaps. Major mistake with this particular aircraft. Immediate stall.
