My first new car was a red 1984 Mustang GT. Unfortunately I got hit head on by a drunk who was on the wrong side of a divided four lane highway a month after I took delivery. One of the policemen who responded to the accident told me at the hospital that me that if I had been driving a Camaro or Firebird me and my buddy would have been killed. I was so impressed I wrote a letter to Ford telling them what happened and thanking them for such a well built car. To my surprise a couple of weeks later I got an envelope in mail a couple of weeks later that had the Ford logo the corner and said office of the president underneath, it was from Don Peterson the president of the Ford Motor Company. He had sent me a hand written letter thanking me for writing and telling them what happened and sorry they were about the accident but was happy the Mustang performed as intended in a accident, he also asked me to please where a seat belt in the future and let his office know if I needed any assistance in repairing or replacing the car. I still have that letter today. Don Peterson was the man behind the Mustang GT, the Mustang SVO, the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe and the 5.0 LTD LX. I was impressed that the president of Ford would take the time to respond. I could not picture Lee Iacocca or the president of GM doing the same thing. I ended up buying two more Mustangs after that, a 1987 GT and a 1965 2+2

I drive an 84 midsize LTD daily. Well built, well designed and comfortable. Crown Vic comfort in a reasonable sized car. And 28 mpg highway! Quality was Job 1!!
Ford, Lincoln & Mercury had a nice lineup those days as GM did. I've liked the Lincoln Town Car as the Cadillac Brougham shown in one clip, the Ford LTD Crown Victoeia I've liked with the wheel option shown in video plus the Mercury Grand Marquis at the time I've liked too. My parents had a 1983 Mercury Grand Marquis with nice comfortable plush interior, miss that car.
Man I miss my Tempo/Topaz................I beat that car so hard and kept taking more, best winter beater I ever had. Oil changes consisted of reusing my old oil that I stored over the summer from my summer car. pushing BFI bins in the city and round bails in the fields out in the country. Then the night I killed the car came, took it to the gravel pit and put a hole in the rad. Drove that car for 15 miles with no coolant. pulled up to stop sign and died. Engine was locked. waited 10 minutes for it to cool down and fire right back up and got me the last 5 miles. Next day I checked the oil and lots of metal filings in the oil from the heat but it fired back up. drove it onto the trailer and hauled it to the scrap yard and got $75 for it. Thanks for the memories my little Topaz. Since 1999 I then I purchased 1994 ford probe GT(accident, wrote off), 1994, Ford Taurus SHO (sold to cousin for better MPG, move out of town), 86 Volkswagen diesel, (rusted out), 86 Volkswagen gas, (hit and run, wrote off), 1998 Pontiac Grandprix SE, (3.1 intake leak, engine blew up), 1998 Pontiac Grandprix GTP, (transmission dies x3), 2000 Chevy Malibu (engine blew up, spun bearing, rod knock), 2009 ford fusion..........just rolled (205,000 kms) CURRENT and AWESOME CAR. Also have my 1997 F250HD with 7.3 powerstroke (purchased in 2004) that is still near show room condition with 280,000 kms on the odometer still all original power train with no major repairs. Lesson learned.........will never buy another GM product again.
You know what is missing from these old commercials? It took me a long time to notice. It’s the fine print crap. Modern car commercials have to have paragraphs and paragraphs of legalese, or some guy talking a million miles an hour at the end. None of these old commercials had that, thanks lawyers lol.
Because you used to be able to say "36% better than" and the only disclaimer was "based on '82 figures".. Not what figures, or whose figures, comparing what to what, etc. Decades of suits between companies and consumers brought up to today where you rarely hear claims or comparisons
I loved my 1984 Ford Tempo LX, 1986 Ford LTD Crown Victoria Wagon, 1986 Mercury Marquis, 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe and my 1989 Ford Taurus LX Wagon.
Amplass 333 Just calling it like I see it. Nothing against Ford, I grew up in the 80s and thought they were the best American car maker of the decade (with a few exceptions) especially later in the decade. I’ve made a few comments over the years because there are a lot of cars on the video. It’s actually quite logical.
I recently looked at a couple of SVO Mustangs. I was seriously tempted to buy the '85 model as it was in really good condition. Maybe one of these days I'll have that opportunity. This era's SVO Mustangs are certainly "exotic" when compared to the plethora of 5.0s that populate the country.
Tempo wasnt too bad. My neighbor had one last 20 plus years. Her sister had the mercury topaz only lasted 3 years. Because 1 she kept finding and grinding the gears.she was lousy at driving.
@@R1ch4rd74 True, my dad had an 86 GLS Coupe with the higher output 2.3 and 5 spd. He bought it used in 93, and used it for 6 years. He only replaced tires, battery and re painted it 2 years before selling it. Oh, and the power steering went... That was pretty common on those old Fords.
My parents bought a new 85 Tempo, it was a good car, but it did end up having one problem, you couldn't put the gearshift into park, it was an automatic, it went into the shop to get repaired, but was fine after that, it ended up with my sister when she lived in Colorado
Compare a Ford Tempo to an Audi 4000 and a Dodge Aries? The Aries, sure, but the Audi? Were any potential Audi buyers swayed by the graceful lines of the Tempo/Topaz?
Yeah Audi's in the 1980's were pretty bad. Not just mechanically but cosmetically. The Tempo was definitely a better looking (and, quite sadly, a better quality) car.
I had a offset white 1992 Ford Tempo, I bought it with 70,000 miles and drove it well over 200,000 miles and it was a very reliable car, that 2.3 4 cylinder was a great engine.
I grew up riding in an 84 escort diesel that my dad bought new and still got it! It's far from being driveable but it's out there. It rusted out before I was old enough to drive it.
Back when we actually had to earn a drivers license, drivers ED was in a Tempo. Our last day of school the instructor let us listen to the radio and drive ourselves home. Good times.
I bought a brand new Tempo in 86. That was a great car. I out 180,000 miles on it before selling it to a college kid. It was definitely money well spent.
My first car was a 1988 Ford Escort, I got it for a case of beer - 24$. I drove it from 89 to 94, major engine and transmission sent that car to the scrap yard. Bought a 85 Merkur, wow what a wonderful car. I still have it, albeit it has been in storage for the last 10 years.
@James05574 they were out in mid 85 as a new 86 model , but in that 1983 commercial that was the prototype Taurus they were working on if you look closely
Crown Vic sucked. As big as a limo, yet as slow as an Escort. F-150s were pretty good though, but I feel like that gen is overshadowed by the next one (the last boxy trucks)
@@scottkrafft6830For the time they were a reliable smooth car. Compared to the Chevy Caprice’s of the time (I’ve owned a 1984 and a 1986 Caprice), they were much better cars. Better built fit and finish, better interior materials, better paint, stronger frame, better engines (Chevy still was using a Carburetor and a smogged out “top of the line” 305 that was known for running cams flat) and leaking oil. The 302 was fuel injected, smoother running, a much better engine a With “more” power. They also were longer lasting. The Caprice had better styling, but that is subjective Ofcoarse.
it's funny, some of those cars like the tempos and escorts later turned out to be a POS - but not when they were new, people loved driving those for the first few years - great commercials
i wish ford would bring back the thunderbird and turn it into a vette fighter high performance 2 seater coupe, because ford really needs a car like that in its lineup to compete with the highend class of sports cars.
30 plus years later and my 1990 Lincoln towncar still is my daily driver. But it has not been without putting money back into it and work. But hey the car was only designed to last 10-15 years max. So I am the second or third owner. Plus I have a 1996 Lincoln with over 250,000 on it. I know that cars now a days regularly get this milage. But back then they where only designed to las 150-200,000 miles max. Plus muy dad drives a 99 grand marquies that has probably been over heated a dozen times. And it has almost 260,000 on it.
Those Fox body Mustangs, 1979-1993, my favorite style of Mustang. I wish I could find one, but getting folks to give them up is like pulling teeth. You still see the 79-93's in the year 2020 that have been restored. Maybe one day.
Milepost 484 The earlier ones were ugly , but around 90-93 the ground affects made them sexy . My friend had a 5.0 Gt that was sweet looking ! Also the mercury Capri 5.0 version was rare and cool back then ...
The Thunderbirds and Mercury Cougars of that era had a major rust problem. They're almost extinct today. While you can find some ''84 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supremes, Buick Regals, and Chrysler LeBarons, you don't ever see these Fords. And the paint flaked off badly on the Tempo. The Escort did seem to hold up well.
Most cars rusted quite quickly hence the Rusty Jones/etc rustproofing scandals. Paint on most brands was very poor in quality and many Ford designs into the 90's all rusted in the same locations due to poor designs and quality.
I owned two Ford Tempos. First time I put alot of miles on it...went over my lease mileage...then the engine blew a rod and I had to replace the entire motor...great car though. Then my second Tempo had a V6 engine, there was not much pickup to it..4 cylinder was probably better..oh well! Both cars were a decent ride.
My Cousin's girlfriend then now wife had a red 1984 Ford Tempo and they were always getting speeding tickets with that car. They beat the crap out of that car and it kept on going, they drove it in High School, they got married and still drove it til they had their 2nd child and then they got a 1989 Ford Taurus LX Wagon.
My brother bought a brand new 86 Ford Tempo. Computer problems right off the dealership. FORD couldn't fix. The mechanics didn't know what an error code was. These people weren't trained on the logistics of this new computer control system.
When the Ford Wagons are going around the track tailgating each other, (425) I would have loved the guy in the Escort to slam on the brakes and see the two larger wagons SMASH into it! That would have been funny!!!!! (Ford brakes, they don't work worth a shit!)
my how times change, now quality is nowhere near job 1. profit at any cost is job 1. even if you have to use the cheapest suppliers with the worst quality control you can possibly get.to hell with customer loyalty, as long as you make a profit.but its hard to make a profit when you have over 60 recalls in 2022 alone.
0-60 times between 7 and 10 secs were considered quick back then. Your family sedan of today is far more powerful and faster than sports cars of the early 80's
Hey, the mustang made 210hp in 86 and 225hp in 87. I however have a low spec standard output 5.0 v-8 that puts out all of 150hp. In 4 years, it went from 112 hp in 1980, to 130 hp in 83-84 and finally 140hp in 85. In 80-82 there was also a 4.2 v-8 optional that came with a 2.28 gear and a 4 speed overdrive. Bet that thing sat at 1000rpm at 80mph... All and all, its been a pretty good car though. I have 220k miles on my 86 and ill bet its still close to 10 seconds 0-60, which motor week called "fast enough for any driver" when they reviewed it. This was the first time power went up in a v-8 since 1972...
I bought a new 1984 Ford F 150 with a manual 3 speed + overdrive and straight 6. I gave it away to a summer camp in Texas in 2004. I had over 300,000 miles and other than normal maintenance items I had to replace an alternator and fuel pump. Damned good truck, but not very pretty by 2004.
As a person who was an adult and buying cars back when these commercials were made, I did feel that during this time Ford cars were built with better tolerances and were tighter then previously made in the 70’s.
I have been watching a lot of old car commercials lately and noticed the MPG claims back in the late 70's were higher than today. Wonder if it was BS or reality and we just focus on mor HP today
Justin Sievers Better gas back then. They're rated at "perfect conditions" which is flat road at 55mph. They are also rated with the smallest engine, manual transmission, and high gear ratio.
MPG was a MUCH bigger concern in the late 70's because the oil crisis. Quality reliability and safety took a backseat to fuel economy look at cars like the chevette for example
Justin Sievers ++ car's made back then did get better MPG mainly because they were lighter , today car's are much heavier to meet crash ratting standards , trucks also , a subcompact back then would weigh about 2100 pounds today they are well over 3000 pounds weight is the enemy of performance and economy
The way they have done the tests also has changed over the years. But when you compare how much more powerful today's cars and trucks are and how much more they need to provide with modern electronics, etc.. today's cars are not too bad.
That spirit from Ford died at 90´s sadly. Ive got a Mistique by Mercury and it was the worst experience Ive had in a car. The Ive got a Chrysler Cirrus and it was a good car by far from my experience with Ford.
The full size cars were great but the compact and midsize Ltd II were terrible especially the 3.8 V6 what a nightmare engine then there's the escort with its rear struts that are prone to rotting out cursing the loss of control, and then there were the timing issues they had, The tempo had transmission and electrical problems along with the body seam in the floor where the two halves are glued together rots and breaks away, the fox body mustang's also were prone to rust problems with the front suspension and shock towers and also would break in half where the body seams were glued together
For some reason these commercials make me feel proud to be an American.

Milepost 484
The earlier ones were ugly , but around 90-93 the ground affects made them sexy . My friend had a 5.0 Gt that was sweet looking !
Also the mercury Capri 5.0 version was rare and cool back then ...
Why didn't Ford advertise the EXP alongside their other models? They would have sold more if they marketed the model better.
The EXP had 2 seats. That was why.
1985 Ford TBird. Miss that thing !!
So did 1989 to 1997. I had a 92 that the body rotting away before the engine and transmission let go
Most cars rusted quite quickly hence the Rusty Jones/etc rustproofing scandals. Paint on most brands was very poor in quality and many Ford designs into the 90's all rusted in the same locations due to poor designs and quality.
Ford galvanized all of the sheet metal around the wheels and lower body panels and had a 10 year corrosion warranty.
Just wait for the GM and fiat fanboys to come bitch in the comments. Ford has always been on top and always will be.
Sift Nick toyota and nissan are better
Fuck yeah ford forever 💪
As a GM driver and former Chrysler driver, I have to admit that Ford is the most innovative and is always ahead of the game.
I owned two Ford Tempos. First time I put alot of miles on it...went over my lease mileage...then the engine blew a rod and I had to replace the entire motor...great car though. Then my second Tempo had a V6 engine,
there was not much pickup to it..4 cylinder was probably better..oh well! Both cars were a decent ride.
My Cousin's girlfriend then now wife had a red 1984 Ford Tempo and they were always getting speeding tickets with that car. They beat the crap out of that car and it kept on going, they drove it in High School, they got married and still drove it til they had their 2nd child and then they got a 1989 Ford Taurus LX Wagon.
love that mustang svo!
My brother bought a brand new 86 Ford Tempo. Computer problems right off the dealership. FORD couldn't fix. The mechanics didn't know what an error code was. These people weren't trained on the logistics of this new computer control system.
Cars were good looking back then.
gotta love the shape of that cougar!
When the Ford Wagons are going around the track tailgating each other, (425) I would have loved the guy in the Escort to slam on the brakes and see the two larger wagons SMASH into it! That would have been funny!!!!! (Ford brakes, they don't work worth a shit!)
thunderbird vs BMW 6 series are they serious! hahahahahaaaa
It was faster and handled better and cost about 1/3 the price...
my how times change, now quality is nowhere near job 1. profit at any cost is job 1. even if you have to use the cheapest suppliers with the worst quality control you can possibly get.to hell with customer loyalty, as long as you make a profit.but its hard to make a profit when you have over 60 recalls in 2022 alone.
Only 11 hp to maintain a steady speed of 50 mph? That's handy considering that's all a 5.0 V8 from the 80s produced.
I have a 1984 F150 that has been a Minnesota truck and it’s still running strong at almost 800,000 miles.
As a person who was an adult and buying cars back when these commercials were made, I did feel that during this time Ford cars were built with better tolerances and were tighter then previously made in the 70’s.
Only cars I see from these advertisements now are the Mustangs now, which many have been restored.
7:31 Holy shit, 66 MPG highway? If that's true and not exaggerated it puts modern hybrids to shame!
I have so much uni work to do, why am I watching adverts for cars from a country I don't live in from before I was born
Unisex?
@@hikdingle2210 I wish
Not 1 of those 84 tempo's are on the road lol
Any one get an ad about a Chevy commercial before this video played
I'm fairly certain that's Jack Telnack at 2:04.
I had a 87’ T-Bird and the thing was a piece of shit
Have You Driven A Ford Lately? 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Pure 1980s domestic garbage. Made the mistake of buying two Fords that decade (86 Escort, 89 Taurus). Those were my last Fords.
Your an idiot. Probably never took care of your vehicles either
Should have bought a 5.0 Mustang, an LTD Crown Vic or a truck instead of anemic FWD stuff. What were you thinking?
Had a great '85 mustang, well built, mom had '87 Taurus wagon, I agree that car wasn't the greatest. '78 Cutlass Supreme took that award, awesome car.
The body roll on the Thunderbird is absurd
Our quality is 36% better than chrysler
36% of what units?
BandomBeviews Quality!
Hey it's advertisment for the stupids (=TV Viewer), so what do you expect? Science or what? ;)
36 qualities better than chrysler.
36% more of positive reviews compared to Chrysler's.
I suppose
I have been watching a lot of old car commercials lately and noticed the MPG claims back in the late 70's were higher than today. Wonder if it was BS or reality and we just focus on mor HP today
Justin Sievers Better gas back then. They're rated at "perfect conditions" which is flat road at 55mph. They are also rated with the smallest engine, manual transmission, and high gear ratio.
Justin Sievers there was also a fuel crisis back in the 80s
Ford #1
What the heck was that all about, starting at 10:16?? (just before the last commercial).
Ese Ford thunderbird aquí en México estaba bien pinchecito al lado del Ford Mustang. Y lo comparan con un BMW. O un Mercedes Benz. No mamen.
2:22 Whoa he looks like Cam Neely/Seabass from Dumb and Dumber
That spirit from Ford died at 90´s sadly. Ive got a Mistique by Mercury and it was the worst experience Ive had in a car. The Ive got a Chrysler Cirrus and it was a good car by far from my experience with Ford.
Is it me, or is it just that the Ford Tempo looks a lot like the Opel Senator by GM!
7:10.............."And this Ford Escort, being an American car, will be in the shop for repairs a lot more than any of these Japanese imports!!!!!!!"
Ford built tought
Frot build toughgt
ford cars is magic!!
Wanderley Rosa
Yes they ARE
The first commercial uses the same introductory music as ITC productions...
My driver's ed car, with spongy brakes and questionable steering. 1995 was the year, the car was an 1984, I think
The didn't glue anything together then. They also galvionized all of the lower sheet metal on the bottom half
Cuando Ford hacia buenas cosas!!!!
Back when car seats were cushy and comfortable.
2020 VS 1984
The first generation computer was flawed. 89 upgrade was a better unit.Error codes could be diagnosed with a plug in decoder.
I had a '92. Great car, but BAD rocker panel design. All T-birds, Cougars and Mark VIII's all rotted there.
