bZ owner here. I like the dash setup. You just have to get used to looking over the wheel. The mute button is the power button between volume buttons. The AWD has great acceleration and grip but you can tell it's heavy.

Thanks for the review. I don't know if any other commenter has pointed this out but the reason for the lack of a glove box is radiant heating. Radiant heating is much less taxing on range than the HVAC system but trade off is no glove box.

New bz4x has a real world range of 450km, as tested in the Netherlands, outside temp 11 degrees. Far more efficient motors, on par with model Y, far better charging and 10 years warranty on car and batteries. Only ev you van consider to buy 2nd hand in a few years. So nothing, nothing wrong with the bz4x.

It should have a volume knob, but if you’re getting a call while driving, you should be using Bluetooth hands free. You may be able to mute by pressing and holding or changing the audio mode instead of tapping furiously 50 times.

@@Wonky4925 But it has much less range with a bigger battery, slow charging that’s limited to twice in one day, and it’s extremely heavy. It’s just not a good EV even if the build quality is nice. It has similar range to a base grade Nissan LEAF, but costs twice as much. It’s just a bad car in general. You could have had an Ioniq 5 with better features, more range, and much better looks for a bit less. There’s also the Polestar 2, the Volvo midsize SUVs, and the EQB. Anyone who picks the Toyota out of that bunch is just a Toyota fanboi.

Maybe for you, it's the worst, but for someone, it's the best. That's why they build a car like that. I see nothing different about the range from others, except the charging speed is not very fast, because it protects against damaging of battery. They will fix it in May.

Yeah Chevrolet has priced the Bolt Euv so affordably that the charging speed isn’t an issue like this BZ4X is. Because like you said the price range.. I’d trust toyota over all for an ICE vehicle but for an EV, any other automaker (besides the leaf) are priced the same and more.. luxurious and sport as well as charge much faster

NOT a solid choice at all. Was looking at the I5 when a Toyota salesperson called and said to come and look at the bz. What an absolute heap of garbage. Drove terrible. No power. Slow charging with no range. Yeah, it's shocking toyota made such a POS. Bought the I5 immediately. I think toyota decided to leave the ev market out of embarrassment.

seating position: I have a long torso and I sit very low in mine with power seats. Maybe the manual seat tracks are taller? That would be strange. The original design had a yoke with variable ratio steer-by-wire and a max rotation of 150 deg. There was no wheel hoop to block the speedo screen and your hands lined up perfectly with the hub controls. Huge disappointment that the yoke and steering were left on the R&D floor and the display wasn't moved after the choice was made.
no volume knob: press the "power" button at the bottom of the screen. It pauses music apps. Took me 3 weeks to discover that without RTFM.
wireless charger: I feel less dumb now that I know other people are also constantly leaving their phone in there.
Range: I have an AWD and the usable range is more like 170. The car struggles to average better than 500kWh/100mi. You only get about 80 of that 100kW of charge power, and only below 25%. Then it falls off very rapidly, averaging about 35kW from 20-80% and dipping to level 2 charge speeds and WORSE above 80%. Charging from 10-80% regularly takes 90 min, not the claimed 50.
No Frunk: that's because this is a compliance car and it's just the standard Hybrid Synergy Drive with the ICE ripped out and a motor stabbed in its place. Nothing "ground-up" about it other than the fact that it's a new body and has a low-slung battery.
The name: yes, it's clunky and stupid. You would think they learned this lesson with Scion but apparently Toyota has no generational memory.
1 pedal drive: progressively more "unavailable" the closer you get to full charge. In a car that has range and charge speed issues.
Towing: check out the "Activity Mount" accessory.
No glove box: that's where the radiant leg heater is in cars with the weather package. There's a bigass smuggler's compartment under the false bottom of the little bin below the armrest. It's really too bad that the big well below the ergonomically nonfunctional panel where the phone charger is, is completely inaccessible while you're on the road.
Efficiency: the AWD, like I stated previously struggles to do much better than 2 miles/kWh. I'm on the central coast of CA.
the drive: These things really do "car" really well. They just don't do it for very far.
the tech: The built-in voice command system is absolutely useless. The cameras are all jarringly low-res. Other than that, everything works great. Except when Safety Sense 3.0 decides that you are getting off at every exit. Every time. And it STILL doesn't do go-stop-go without driver input. And any white or red light you can see through the windshield will cancel the auto high beams. The steering wheel vibration warning feature can be turned on in the menus, but as far as I can tell doesn't actually exist. All the driving aid chimes are practically inaudible and can't be turned up.
The rear: leg room back there is indeed cavernous.
Verdict: don't buy the AWD, you sacrifice too much livability. I would bet that the AWD models were manufactured first and the FWD came later with a better battery and onboard charger. Don't buy either one if your commute is more than 20 miles. You will have legitimate and crippling range anxiety because of the frighteningly terribad charging speeds.

Phone issue is other there-try to connect android auto to that usb port, put your huge phone there and close a lid. Who designed that phone place, must be drunk that day lol
Its family car, just screaming around "all about safety". Even 70% of car settings are on aka head-up display, just in case you want to change, lets say "curvature slowing down level" on the go-your eyes always on the road.
Have you noticed huge space in back seats? Is not for your adult beer friends with cheap jokes, its for kids kicking you in front seat :)
