- The family of a baby girl who died at the hands of a nursery worker in Greater Manchester have issued a statement outside court.
Kate Roughley, 37, has been found guilty of manslaughter following the death of Genevieve Meehan, who was in her care at Tiny Toes Nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, in May 2022.
She was today found guilty of manslaughter by ill-treatment following a month-long trial at Manchester Crown Court.
Roughley is due to be sentenced later this week.
Paying tribute to baby Genevieve, her family said: "It has been just over two years since our beautiful and wonderful daughter’s life was taken from her. Genevieve’s loss has destroyed our family. We grieve for her every day. We long desperately to see her smile, hear her laugh and feel her warm embrace. Her absence is a physical and emotional wound that will never heal.

Babies or toddlers should be home with their loving parents. Most governments around the world are destroying families by making basic things as rent, food, mortgages so unaffordable that both parents have to be working.
Absolutely, I was one of them, taking care from day one, I never have regretted putting my children first, I have seen what children are like when parents put their job/career first over their family as I have been a nanny to families.
I totally agree. Little ones need their mothers or dads not strangers. They need to attach themselves. I shudder to think this child died in the presence of people who didn't care about her enough to check on what this wicked woman did to her.
Many parents actually don't want to be home with their children,they feel bored to be with their child instead of beeing amongst adults😢 I am so happy that I loved beeing with my both babies,until they were almost three. I loved every moment, I never ever was bored, if I felt bored me and my babies went to town or to visit friends or to museums or grandparents or the park or picnics, there was so much to do, I miss those days😢
No government is responsible for this - Only the most selfish and harmful ones amongst us create children even though they are not in a position to meet their mental and physical development needs.

I put my children first by working to enable to keep a roof over their heads, food in their bellies and clothes on their back. If you can afford for one parent to stay home to care for your children, well, bully for you. We don't all have that luxury.
What makes me angry is why didn't anyone else intervene and attend the distressed baby. It seems they were all neglegent.

Genevieve Meehan is a name we should never know. She should be the child we pass in the street, who might smile and wave at passing strangers. So much love and potential gone because of the cruelty of someone who shouldn't have been anywhere near her, much less the one charged with Genevieve's care. May the sentence be hefty! May Genevieve's loved ones find some comfort in the joy that her brief time on earth brought!

A lot of comments regarding leaving children with strangers but unfortunately a lot of people are basically forced back to work due to the cost of living and pressure from the DWP.

How incredibly brave was her dad to stand there and read such poignant words. This is incredibly sad and also makes me feel very angry, who the heck straps the baby to a beanbag face down!!! Where was her common sence and more disturbingly where was the rest of the staff from 13:35pm to 15:00pm surely some one should have noticed that the monster had strapped the baby in wrongly . 14 years is never enough for what she did but Im sure the other inmates will dish out some of their own brand of justice ⚖️ 😕

Unbelievably, I feel this was not down to incompetence.
It was a deliberate Act of Cruelty and Worse.
On the BBC site, at the start of trial, it stated, that the - monster - strapped her too tight and face down. Genevieve was completely restricted. Unmerciful.
Worse still, that she placed a blanket over Genievives head, and ordered it not to be removed, and her cries to be ignored.
Well, it would/ should have been obvious to even the most simplest minded, that the Angel could not breath!
Although she fought heroically.
The innocent baby would have suffered terribly over an extended time period.
Her agonised cries were ignored, and she was hidden from view.
The culprit was in charge, so her inhumane orders were not questioned.
Horrendous, and Unforgivable.

In the recent past, I worked as a temporary teacher in a prestigious private secondary school.
My classroom was situated in a less central, more quiet part of the school.
Suddenly I heard very young babies distressed crying, it was more than one baby, and their unhappiness was heartbreaking to hear.
After investigating, it turned out that the school had a nursery, situated below, and this experience was standard. Other teachers were upset about it, and felt no baby should be placed in a nursery.
It affected me deeply, and whenever young mothers wish to return to work, and place their baby in nursery, I always tell them about this, and hopefully dissuade them.
P.N. I am not aware there was any cruelty or neglect, I feel it was the babies missing their mother.
However, I cannot forget the

Genevieve was neglected by Kate Roughly in the nursery and Genevieve died. Kate Roughly was charged for Manslaughter and Child Neglect in 2022.

She hated Genevieve. Called her a stress head. A whinger. A diva. And would tell her to shut up if she cried.
Genevive's Law, to honour her life and memory, and to campaign for better child-care practices, awareness and training, and accountability, for child-care managers and business owners, as they are 'not' without some blame/responsibility in this case either.

I took my daughter to daycare. I filled out all the paperwork and everything. Turns out they lost all my daughters info but still keeping my daughter. They didn’t even know her last name let alone her emergency contacts, her doctor, allergies, etc. and they didn’t tell me until weeks after they lost her information. They didn’t even know my, her mothers, name. I paid the bill and have never seen them again. I’d rather look crazy than take a chance. This poor baby I’m sure was so loved and was the queen of her castle. How do you look at a beautiful baby like that and have hate in your heart?

The sentence did not reflect the seriousness of the crime. A horrendous tragedy compounded by an insulting ruling.
That’s why none of my kids go to nursery my son is now 6 in primary and my youngest is 2 he’s at home when I work my husband keeps him them nursery just full of crazy people some don’t even like kids smh so sorry for the family loss sad 😞
Fourteen years is an insult to the baby and family. If any lessons are to learned from this, it should be law that all nurseries and child care facilities have CCTV installed so that parents can have mobile access to check on their infants' welfare at any time of the day. The owners have run off to France, so they'll never be prosecuted, but other nursery directors and child carers should be warned.
Maybe don't outsource the parenting of your baby to strangers
Thousands of children in daycare have great experiences, and their health and safety is paramount.
Should you not take a sick baby to hospital because of Lucy Letby...serial baby murderer?

@apebass2215 They are not replacement mothers. Maybe we need to do a survey on adults who were in daycare to find out if it scarred them for life. I've never heard a peep about that. In saying everything I have said on this thread, not one of my children or grandchildren has ever been in daycare. They even came home at lunchtime rather than have school dinners.
Why is nobody asking why a vulnerable 9 month old baby was with strangers at a nursery instead of with its mother?
Babies that are deprived of their natural mothers during this vital formative period grow up with permanent personality disorders involving lack of empathy and inability to bond. -- Women who, for whatever reason, are unable or unwilling to give their full care and attention to their newborn babies for at least the first year of its life should delay motherhood until this becomes possible.
Her sentence is too short, she obviously doesn't care about children, hope she realises her crime, bless the parents x
Please moms, stay home with your babies if there's ANY possible way. Do without luxuries, no new phone, meals out, cable, new clothes. They're not necessities. Some just can't but so many could if they really tried. These tragedies happen far too often, & babies can't tell you their hurts or fears!
Even cameras can only show when it's too late to prevent harm.
It's worth it to know they're safe, loved, and protected. You'll never regret it, but giving them into someone else's care can bring heartache the rest of your life.

My child have serioud global delays after being sent to nursery at very young age ...she had all her milestones met until she was o months and 1 year in to childminder she stopped smiling and stop all progress altogether. I will regret my whole life why u send her there when she needed me full time.This is a trauma for life 😔
Did your child have mmr vaccine around that time? As that could have caused developmental delays.

I don’t mean to be harsh, but Why parents outsource their parenting to daycares, nannies and nurseries is beyond me. They care more about keeping up with the joneses, than their children. Mothers need to put their children first , not their “careers”. This is the very sad consequence of parents leaving their precious children to people who are strangers or acquaintances. Many parents have no choice but to send their babies to nursery. Parents of young children often have huge mortgages to pay coupled with the cost of living crisis. Most children have a safe and happy time at nursey . What happend to this beautiful little girl was horrific but it is rare. I was a nursery nurse and a stay at home mum I couldn't afford to go back to work nursery fees were more than I earned. Most nursery nurses /workers are highly trained, dedicated loving, but also over worked underpaid and under valued . My niece is highly trained and even has a degree in early years education and is compleatly dedicated tho the little ones in her care . There is a crisis in British childcare provision due to chronic underfunding of the "free places" the government is supposed to provide .
I think the question you should be asking is how did this monster get a job working with young children?

They are still investigating every child who was in any hospital ward that Lucy Letby was on. As far back as her licence to nurse. This killer had worked in the daycare centre for many, many years.
I dont see how or why any parent would put their trust into a complete stranger when it comes to their children let alone a baby. Yes its a nusery, but still they are complete strangers. To actually pay complete strangers to take care of your child instead of doing yourself is rediculous.

@TwoCombsHolmes I say that in the light of a serial killer. Lucy Letby, a nurse on Neo-natal. She murdered several babies, and injured many more. My point is that a murderous child care nurse is rare. The vast majority of children are well cared for and safe. My children didn't go into childcare, btw. I was a stay at home mother.
Where were the other nursery teachers when Gigi was crying, and why is this nursery still open! I just cannot bear it when I hear of babies, children and pensioners are abused and left to die for no reason! It really affects my mental health because no one should have to suffer like this! As for the defendant, she was let off very lightly, and should serve a year that the child would live to, which could have been 100 years! So that would mean life imprisonment! Instead the family have lost an innocent child who was not able to fend for herself, and face life imprisonment themselves for entrusting a business who cruelly failed to see the child was at risk with one of their nursery nurses!
