I think Retton's two vaults were superior. She should have received a 9.9 on her first at least guaranteeing her a share of the Gold if not winning outright.
9.8 for trace tal on first vault? Hang on...it's out of 9.8 and she gets 9.8 with a step. The commentators keep very quiet on this. If I was one of the other coaches I would question this.
For a rabid pro-Retton fanatic, Szabo was overscored. For a well-informed, insightful viewer, she earned a gold medal because her vaults were more difficult and only had very minor steps. Talavera was clearly gifted generous scores. She deserved 9.70 and 9.85 at best.
@@jezjez3938 Szabo was way overscored with that horrible sloppy form in the air and way to much cowboy in the tuck. 9.90 on the first vault was way to high. The second vault was scored accurately as the only noticeable deduction was slight leg separation. Talavera was scored way to high. Her vault was only worth a 9.9 and she scored a 9.8 with a piked down body and huge step.
It really appears as though Szabo was given vault as a consolation prize for Retton being grossly overscored on optional floor and winning the AA. Mary Lou absolutely should have won this vault final. Szabo has bad form and indeterminate positions.

The FIG officials and judges attended, even if from countries that boycotted. This fact adds to the legitimacy of Mary Lou’s gold medal.

I thought they took off for leg and toe separation and for the slight hops. Mary lous vaults were better!

I would call MLRs 2nd vault a 10 here. It was stuck. I don’t think it was quite stuck in the AA. Almost everyone disagrees w/me on that🤷🏻♀️
