My dad is actually friends with the guy who flew it, William Suitor. Basically, William's neighbor asked him to pilot the machine, (he created it) and well, he did. My dad used to play soccer with Will that's how he knew him.
And the physics of it makes no sense. You think of an airplane and it has multiple control surfaces (wings, elevator, ailerons, rudder) to keep it under control. This jet pack appears to just have four nozzles. It would be difficult bordering on impossible to even do controlled straight line flight, much less a takeoff, descent, turn and hover to landing as he does here.
@Pedro Castro Garzon What do you mean? No, I mean my dad used to play AMERICAN SOCCER with Will who flew this. Not Futbol, and you're getting confused with American football. Re-read it.
I Love and miss this Time. I watched the entire LA Olympics and the opening when I was 12 and recorded everything on the first video recorder. And don't miss anything. It was something really big. What a ghost. It was wonderful. Greetings from Bavaria, Reach out.....
I watched this on telly in the middle of the night in the UK. Marvellously OTT opening ceremony, aiming to be the biggest and brightest yet, that seemed to convey the LA of the time's optimism and confidence for the future.
it was not a jet-pack...he was on a zip-line. it was just all one big con to big up the Olympics and America's technology. Also remember the safety of all the people underneath him as he flew over....each and everyone of them also a participant.
used yes....used correctly and safely...no. Did they perform this jetpack stunt racing over hundreds of people in a stadium? No they did not....hence the camera cutting away also
its truth. show me proof this was performed? Is this the only proof? The insurance and dangers of performing this stunt over the crowd in the stadium is far to great a risk to chance. Even as he approaches to land the hot gas that is ejected to apply thrust is not even 2 meters over the participants on the field. If his landing was off by a matter of yards, you are looking at severe injuries or possible deaths. But if you think this happened....''live on tv'' well then you keep on believing what you see on tv. Even the Chinese faked parts of their Olympic ceremony for tv. Its nothing new
I was a volunteer driver during the games. Funny but we actually had very little traffic during those games. I hope to volunteer again in 2028. Great time to be in L.A. for those two weeks of sport. Really great memories.
+David Hoffman...you did an amazing job with your 16mm camera...this was BEFORE all the new technology i.e. iphones, ipads ! Thank you so much for you well done documentary on these EXCELLENT Games! As I watched these Games Live on the ABC network I felt so Touched by the strong emotions and the PAGEANTRY that these Games evoked I got the sense many people their in attendance were most enthralled by the Opening Ceremonies-well planned and choreographed by the organizers...WELL DONE! Again...thanks for this inspiring documentary!.
Enjoyed this very much, thank you. Here in Kenya back in 1984, the opening ceremony of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games was not televised (at least I don't remember it being televised), though we did get to see several events, via what used to be known as Voice of Kenya (VOK) Television, the only radio and television station in Kenya back in those days. What's the name of the guy running things, the guy in spectacles and wearing the blue coat, what was his full time day job back then, and what became of him? Regards, Michael M. Kamau, Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa, 25th April 2024.
My dad is actually good friends with the guy who flew the jetpack, William Suitor. Suitor used to mow his neighbor's lawn who actually came up with the idea, and asked him to pilot. My dad used to play soccer with Will Suitor the pilot.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Bruhhhhh me too the jet pack man that died in the forest, Mcgee was talking about it to Gibbs in the elevator when he said that about the Olympics
To signal the start of these fantastic Games! Indeed....a coming TOGETHER....UNITY as one whole world UNITED....a competition whereas FRIENDSHIPS will FOSTER.....overall just HUMANITY at it's FINEST!!!!
I remember the 1984 Olympics soooo well! I remember the rocket pack, too. I really wanted one after that. I still want one. The only Olympic games that surpassed the 1984 games were the 1980 games in Moscow, right in the heart of socialist utopia.
@@Mario_N64 OHMYGOD yes! Long live '92! It was heartbreaking when the US Men's volleyball team lost to Brazil, and had to settle for a bronze medal at best (which they did by kicking Cuba's butt). At least the Brazil team was beat by the Netherlands in the gold medal match, forcing them to settle for silver. Those were the days, weren't they?

Ok got you. I'd just like to say, this channel is really a service to the modern generation. Why? Because sure anyone can find footage from the 50s-80s from major broadcasts in little clips, but the major difference is with yours, it is long-form, no narration (raw in that sense) and interesting videos that we would shoot today on our cell phones (protests, arguments at universities, etc.) but from that generation. Of course you also do professional multi-camera work, but somehow it is just different in feel to major broadcasts. Through your videos we can really get a feel of what a person or group was going through back then and see how similar and dissimilar these trivial and non-trivial experiences were. Watching your videos gives a "young'n" a shot of experience that could never be felt otherwise (books, newspapers, magazines, radio, etc).
Thank you for the memories - I was there as a 12 years old kid, and I still remember that feeling, like the future had just landed on our lap when that jetpack flew out of nowhere and landed at the bottom of the stadium... those days are so long gone by now, I wonder what happened to this country - we were promised the Moon and Mars on jetpacks, instead we got the whole woke garbage and gender-neutral urinals

This and the Barcelona 92 opening ceremony were the most beautiful and classiest.

I think LA was more impressive than Moscow. A lot of things they did in LA are reason why opening ceremonies are produced at such a big scale.
And the 1992 Barcelona games, those were really classy and fun.
