  • We can’t believe how welcoming the local Indonesian people continue to be as we sail further west along the northern coastline of remote Pulau Seram. Our first anchorage was at the tiny village of Seliha where we were greeted like Hollywood celebrities.
Then it was on to the oldest Bajau Village in the Malaku Region at Sawai. The Bajau people were nomadic sea gypsies, originally from the Philippines. They built their wooden houses on stilts over the water to establish Sawai more than 400 years ago near the head of what resembles a long and very deep fiord lined by steep cliffs.
We were very keen to explore this natural wonder and experience the unique Bajau culture but were far from sure we would find anywhere to anchor as we could find no information about the depth of the water. Neither the charts or satellite imagery were much use and extensive internet searches for blogs etc of people who may have gone before us came up blank. In the end we decided if you never ever go, you’ll never ever know and pushed on for what was a very, very memorable stop for many reasons. Sawai is simply one of THE MOST STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL PLACES we have ever been. We hope you enjoy seeing it with us.

You're most welcome Taryn. We're so glad you enjoyed the episode and thank you for taking the time to comment. We really appreciate it. We have plenty more coming up from remote areas of Indonesia. We are enjoying it so much we did a visa run out of the country and came back for another 6 month stint. Hope you can follow along. Cheers R & K

I'm enjoying this series of your travels so much. As I've said before this is a bucket list item for me, to sail Indonesia & Asia.
Thanks for sharing, but I do wish I could be there with you 🥰⛵️

We're so glad you're enjoying our fun and games in Indonesia as much as we love watching you guys in the Caribbean. We just can't believe the number of boats everywhere over there though. We're heading to Sulawesi at the moment and came across an Aussie sloop yesterday coming the other way. He told us he hadn't seen another yacht in two months. That's one of the reasons we love it here so much. We hope things work out well so you can get back on Cordellia soon. Cheers Rob and Karen

Yep! As would we. That's why we carry a scuba kit and it's paid for itself on the first recovery. The place was so worth it though. Beautiful. Cheers R & K

That's exactly why we didn't anchor in meny nice spots when we sailed through Indo.

To be honest Anthony, we knew it was a bit suspect but it's the only place we've had any problem in over six months in Indo so far. We're heading to Sulawesi next so hopefully Sawai stays our only tangle. Cheers R & K

@@Dreamtimesail fair enough our main problem we found a lot of nice anchorages we spotted on our chart's were full of sea weed farms so we generally tried to find river outlets .around Sulawesi was bad for that. Fair Winds

Yes we've been warned of that so we'll just have to see what options we can find as we go. We're starting at Bira and going around anti-clockwise.
