Where on Earth Have We Sailed To Now? Series 4 Episode 99
There’s two things we love about sailing to far flung destinations, unexpected, but pleasant surprises and wildlife encounters. In this episode of our cruising adventures onboard Our Dreamtime in Indonesia we experienced a multitude of both.
It all starts waking up to a total glass out at our unexpected gem of a tropical island anchorage off Sumbawa and then encountering a large pod of dolphins soon after setting sail for Lombok and our destination at Medana Bay Marina. We liked the set up here so much we changed our plans and stay, setting off to explore some of this amazing island. Dominated by the heights of the Mount Rinjani Volcano, we expected to find beauty amongst the rice terrace...

Sail with us deep into Saleh Bay on Indonesia’s Sumbawa Island where we are stunned by the ultimate snorkelling adventure ever, swimming amongst more gigantic, but incredibly gentle whale sharks than we could possibly even count. Then continue riding along on Our Dreamtime as we sail further west from one breathtaking anchorage to another along Sumbawa towards Lombok. Through Patreon or Ko-fi y...
We Sailed to a Spectacular Island Volcano and Swam in its Crater - S4 Ep 97

The waters of the Komodo Islands are renowned for very strong currents as the Pacific and Indian Oceans collide with their waters raging through the area’s many intra-island channels. After leaving Labuanbajo, we joined the long, long list of sailors to fall foul of these as first we fought our way to reach our anchorage at the island of Banta, then struggled to leave it. Fortunately Our Dreamt...

There is only one, true house of the dragon on this planet and it’s located in Indonesia’s Komodo National Park. On these stunning volcanic islands survivors of the dinosaur age still live and thrive. We first walked amongst the Komodo Dragons back in 2010 when we sailed here on the Panisi Umbah Puti and now in 2023 we were back after sailing here on our own yacht, Our Dreamtime, and keen to se...

In this episode of our “Dreamtime in Indonesia” series, we sail from the remote island of Pulau Bonerate to an uninhabited tropical island we first visited back in 2011. Thankfully, we find it just as idyllic a paradise as we remembered with crystal clear waters, vibrant coral and abundant fish life making time under water snorkelling a priority. The weather was perfect for our stay with clear ...

This episode of our “Dreamtime in Indonesia” sailing series starts sedately enough as we sail from Pasawajo to anchor in the massive reef lagoon of Taka Lambongan before things start to amp up when we struggle to find somewhere to anchor at our next stop at Pulau Jinatung. Great episode, the Lombok wildlife parks looks like a great place to visit. Your making me realise that we're going to be clicking u a few hours on the new boat soon! Where's the wind?

We're often a bit conflicted about zoos but the Wildlife Park is great. The wildlife are all rescued animals from all over Indonesia including a lot seized from smugglers unfortunately and it's very plain to see how much the staff love them all. SNR 2 getting closer every day. Cheers R & K

Trev we share your concerns about a lot of zoos but this was very good, The animals are very obviously well cared for and have not just been sourced from the wild but rescued from bad situations such as having been injured and many seized from wildlife smugglers which is unfortunately a lucrative trade here. We are really working hard on our audio and have invested in new gear including Rode radio mikes and a better shotgun microphone and very expensive "Dead Cat" style wind suppressor so you will see continue improvement over future episodes. Some of the content off the action cams however is difficult. Wind noise on a sailboat is a huge issue and sometimes it does beat us. Thank you for your video, but there are a few issues. We have been sailing in Indonesia for nearly 12 months and it has been a wonderful experience and would highly recommend it. But below are some comments that relate to OUR experience here:- Charts. Navionics charts are variable. The major ports that we have been to, we have found that the charts have been quite accurate. At the other end of the spectrum, at the Bonarates we found them to be up to 1.5 miles out!! The recommendation is that one needs to check. Cleaning vinegar. Australian food grade vinegar is about 4-5% Acetic Acid. Cleaning vinegar is about 6% Acetic Acid. We have bought here in Indonesia, vinegar that 25% Acetic Acid!! It was bought at a supermarket. Vinegar is obtainable. If you want your travel insurance to cover you to drive a vehicle, then you must have a FULL license for the class of vehicle that you wish to drive. Provisional licenses are not normally good enough. We have one of the blue shopping trolleys and it has been most useful. It will carry 4 jerry cans, but it does not enjoy rough surfaces. Diesel. 3 grades - BioSolar, DexLite and Dex. You do NOT want BioSolar in your tank - it stinks!! It is quite hydroscopic (absorbes water) and may clog your filters, or worse, you injectors and pump. DexLite is still pretty "ordinary" and can be up to 1,500ppm of Sulphur. It can leave a black stain on the outside of your boat and the Racor filters clog quickly. Dex is the stuff you want. It is "only" 50ppm of Sulphur and does not stain our boat or clog our filters. Australian diesel is 10ppm of sulphur. ATMs. These things can be readily found in many small towns and, of course, larger ones. There is a transaction limit of 1, 2 or 2.5 million Rupiah. There is a transaction limit at all of the ATMs that we have used. You can just insert your card again to get more cash. This has been our experience. We have, only rarely, found empty machines, but there is normally another machine close by. Check your bank charges as charges vary between banks. CBA is very expensive. In our time here travelling, Maluku, Flores, Lombok, Sulawesi (North, South and West), Raja Ampat, Komodo, Halmahera, East Kalimantan and West Papua, we have never had to stern tie. We have 100m of chain and can anchor in 30m quite happily. Yes, we have to chose carefully. We prefer to anchor so that we get a breeze through the boat. Booze. On entry, we said that our extensive supply of alcohol we have on board is "ships stores". We said that it stays on board, it is not taken ashore and we NEVER give alcohol to locals. We have found that beer, gin, vodka, rum or even Arak are readily available in supermarkets in most places. The locally made spirits are relatively cheap at about AUD30 per bottle. Imported stuff is a different story. Beer is about AUD50 a case of 330ml cans. There are many sources of really good information. Examples are Indonesian Compendium (Soggy Paws), Zulu Offshore (as you mentioned) and the Sailing SE Asia Information Sharing Facebook site. To a lesser extent, there is No Foreign Land and the Cruising Guide to Indonesia by Andy Scott. It should be noted that you should dress conservatively when ashore. If you are going to see officials, then cover up!! Long trousers, collared shirts and shoes for men and below the knee skirts/dresses for the ladies. Remember to be polite, patient and smile even if you are frustrated. It will get sorted out in the end!!

I want one for my 4wd expedition vehicle, and also for my boat. So I guess the petrol version is best..... but also as my RV will be 100% electric, solar.....am I better off having a 240v that uses an inverter, and get the high output, so doesn't take that much power to fill a 200 liter tank.....

Hi Dream Time, just stumbled across your channel, thumbs up & subscriber now. We're heading off to Indo again soon, this time to the Raja Ampat, then on to the Philippines via Palau or Sulawesi. How are you finding Sulawesi as far as a safe cruising ground on the way to the Philippines? Which route would you recommend safety wise. It's a no brainer Sulawesi will be more scenic & easier day sailing. Guessing the n/e trades won't be a problem in that area. We usually sail 2 up & We're a 13.4mt Sailing cat. We've already been held up once at gun point in PNG so we're a bit gun shy. All good advice from already having sailed Indonesian waters, we can only mirror your sentiments. Sail safe, we've Gotcha Covered Ian & Margie

Hi Ian, Thanks for coming onboard our channel with us. We are loving Sulawesi. The place is beautiful and uncrowded. We will have some very cool episodes from here coming out in the future. Other than our buddy boat, we have only seen three other cruising boats since February. The people have all been super friendly, helpful and generous and we have had absolutely no safety concerns other than the Mt Ruang volcano that started erupting just as we were getting into the north. As Karen is a severe asthmatic, we can't risk her being in volcanic ash so from the amazing Togian Islands we are now back tracking south rather than completing our planned circumnavigation across the top. Feel free to reach out via our Facebook if you'd like to chat further. Cheers R & K.

those rubber bushings on the prop....they're replaceable

Thanks for the info. An Australian Mercury dealer told us they weren't and also that, at the time, Mercury also had nil stock of the props themselves. Fortunately we found the Prop Warehouse with aftermarket ones that were much cheaper anyway. For the price of the new prop we think it would probably hardly be worth trying to bond a new bush in anyway. Cheers R & K

I thought the only charges, when using your wise card at the ATM. Were the atm withdrawal fee, NO BS bank fee.

    • @Dreamtimesail
      @Dreamtimesail Месяц назад

Good pick up. We think you're right Daniel but the problem is still that you get multiple ATM charges because you need to make multiple transactions to get any decent amount of cash due to the tiny limits on the ATMs. Many are limited to just one or two million Rupiah ($100-200aud) We do have a Wise account but prefer to use Western Union whenever possible for the superior exchange rate and we can get as much cash as we need. Cheers R & K

Loved the tips! I hadn’t thought about the trolley, spare prop, motorcycle license or something like Western Union. Some really good advice. Jay has his motorcycle license but I’ve been thinking of getting mine for ages and now you’ve made up my mind. Hopefully we’ll be out there cruising Indo ourselves in the not too distant future.

Can get get things like cauliflower and almonds readily in indo?

We manly shop in the local traditional markets and haven't seen cauliflower at all. We did come across almonds in a supermarket on Lombok that caters for westerners but they were waaay to expensive for us. Cashews are far more common and reasonably priced. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Well done for mentioning Western Union, Money gram is another very similiar option. While riding motorbikes thoughout SE Asia these have, at times, been indespensable resources and have literally saved me from sleeping on the streets. Agencies for these services are prolific almost anywhere in Asia.

Thanks so much for the comment. We have been very happy with Western Union and there exchange rate/ fees absolutely kill the banks. Cheers R & K.

Regarding riding motorcycles. To comply with local laws in most places you will also need an International Drivers Permit (IDP) to accompany your motorcycle license. An IDP is available from your (Australian) state motoring body (NRMA?) for around $50 (last time I got one). That's good advice regarding checking your travel insurance policy as some will cover up to 250cc, some will cover less or not at all. If you're Australian and want to ride something bigger there is an "Adventure Pack" that will provide cover from Alliance or have a look at Global Nomads insurance if you're not Australian. And finally and very seriously, SE Asia is not the place to learn to ride a motorcycle. Don't become a Go-Fund-Me page.

All very good points. Police have asked to see Rob's license however we've never been asked for an IDP up here so we tend not to carry it with us on bikes as it is just paper and will deteriorate. Good to have if crap hits fan though. Cheers R & K.
