Wow! It felt like it's the kind of tropical paradise where 'snorkeling' is the unofficial morning ritual, and 'palm trees' provide better shade than any sunglasses could. And for some reason, it felt like Maratua Island is the perfect blend of 'seaside serenity meets wildlife antics'! I only visited places like Bali in Indonesia so it's pretty refreshing. Hopefully, my travel dart would land on Indonesia again and try some kind of off-the-beaten path.
Those islands are straight out of a fantasy. Insanely beautiful places. I love how you guys continue to find the most obscure places to explore…places that most of us have never even heard of, but now want to visit. You are always fun, entertaining and informative. Each of your videos is a gem.

Bali and Lombok are crowded....I think islands like Maratua, Anambas and Kei are better...but of course they are harder to reach....that's what make them real hidden gems....

Not many tourists because it is hard to reach as you found out. We visited in 2017 by private yacht, and the air port was being built at the time. We were worried the tourists would spoil the island. Obviously the pandemic slowed that down, but now there should be more tourists. We anchored near Nabucco Island and visited the Nabucco Dive Resort where they prepared a beautiful meal for the visitors from the yachts. We had some wonderful diving and snorkelling in the channel entrance near there. It is a very special place (better than Raja Ampat), and we hope that it does not get spoilt with too many tourists.
Thank you for visiting Maratua, but actually the islands are part of East Kalimantan, not North Kalimantan. These are two different provinces of Indonesia on the island of Borneo, just like Sabah and Sarawak are two different states in Malaysia. But I understand the confusion, because Nunukan and Tarakan which were your jumping off points are parts of North Kalimantan. But Berau is a part of East Kalimantan 😅 What can I say, they’re neighboring provinces located right next to each other. North Kalimantan is almost as big as Sabah, while East Kalimantan is much bigger compared to Sabah or North Kalimantan. Hope you enjoyed your stay in Indonesia, cheers!

It was great place to stay! It would be great if staff were a little more helpful with non-divers offering tours to the sandbars and island if you are not into diving! :)
Indonesia has a lot more than Bali! I hope you guys can explore other places in Indonesia, like Bukit Lawang where you can see wild and semi-wild Sumatran orangutans, or visit Raja Ampat where you can see an underwater paradise with diverse marine life or sailing to Komodo island to see komodo dragon and many more.

I was about 12 yrs old when in Fiji dad dove down, grabbed a large turtle around the shoulders & it swan off with him into the distance. Mad experience as a young fella, absolutely epic What a beautiful piece of paradise you both found

I think the nearest airport is to Tarakan Airport but I don't know if the flight is available from Malaysia. The biggest cities around Tarakan are Samarinda and Balikpapan. Maybe you can take connecting flight to Tarakan from there.

@@jestropi i dont know for sure but maybe for the same cost as going to maratua, they generally choose tourist destinations that are more accessible and popular.
