  • I wanted to do this video for years. Right now I have the courage, I might delete this later.
Growing up in an abusive, misogynistic and homophobic cult as a sensitive, bisexual woman, there were a lot of things I always felt were wrong. But they were so normalised in the church culture that I thought I was the problem. Now, 8 years after leaving, I am finally breaking the silence about the disturbing practices happening behind the church's walls.
    00:00 Intro
00:52 Background information on the cult
01:25 Evangelisation services that spread fear
02:28 Rules that keep you in the church
03:32 Rules that keep you isolated from “the world”
06:51 Rules on appearance, s*xualisation from a young age
08:53 Rules on s*x & dating (purity culture)
    09:44 Marriage rules & non-consensual s*x
    12:03 Abstinence-only policy, LGBTQ+ issues
12:51 No contraception / forced births
14:16 Child abuse - physical “discipline”
15:16 Sexism & traditional roles for men vs. women
    17:18 Justification for the rules
17:55 No privacy, every detail shared with everyone
19:55 Funny rules that show how s*x-obsessed the rule-makers are

In this video, I share my personal experiences growing up in the mostly unknown religious community that can be classified as a cult or sect: The Brüder-Baptistengemeinde in Germany, a German-Russian Baptist church. I’ve wanted to make this video for years but was too scared, since so much of my personal history is connected to this cult and I still have many people I love in there.
Nonetheless, I feel it's important to expose the disturbing truths that happen behind closed doors. From child abuse and marital r*pe to the severe oppression of women and many bizarre and oppressive rules related to purity culture, I lay bare some dark realities of life in this cult.
I do not want to offend anyone’s religious beliefs or speak against Christians or Baptists per se. That is not my intention at all. While I focus on the negative aspects in this video, I admit that the religion also brought many good experiences.
But there were also a lot of negative experiences, connected to the rules that I describe in this video. And just because people willingly follow these rules, it does not make the rules okay: People would follow anything if they were strongly convinced not following it would lead to eternal damnation!!!
Okay, I’ll end my rant here. Please share and comment if you have any similar experiences or if this video resonates with you in any way. (Also, probably no one reads this until the end, but if you have, let me know by commenting this emoji: 🙈)

Thanks for sharing this. I was also in an invisible cult from age 17 to 27. They are very present in college dorms, appearing like normal christian college groups, but then once you’re “saved” they begin to take over your life and start to control every decision you make. I had to run away with a single bag of my belongings. It was very hard. I still have nightmares 15 years later.

I grew up in North America and am living in Italy for some time now, the few evangelical/fundamentalist Christian things I’ve seen here are usually foreigner Mormons and Jehovah’s witnesses sent on missions. Even speaking with French/Italian/German friends they haven’t had nearly as much interaction with these groups as one does in the states, aside from some very tragic news stories. It’s very interesting to hear the expectations of it, and how close it is to a lot of evangelical cults in NA.
I myself wasn’t raised in evangelism directly, as my parents had some conflicts over religion. Luckily I escaped some of the more serious mental strain of it, but it’s still has some serious impacts on mine and my sister’s lives. I can’t imagine how difficult that is to be fully immersed in such a group and limited from interaction with the "outside world". From what I know about German schooling, it’s probably beneficial that homeschooling isn’t as easily accepted, hopefully some people have been able to make it out or question things bc of that required connection to the world.
I hope you’ve been able to find community and safe people outside of that environment ❤

    • @angelineblue
      @angelineblue  16 дней назад +1

Yeah when I went to the states for a year I also encountered way more people who were openly Evangelicals / Fundamentalists and some aspects were quite similar to how I grew up. I feel like in Germany it is more of an underground / niche thing - you will only know if you or people you love go there.
I am sorry you were also negatively impacted by it, it is always hard to deconstruct this kind of programming, even when you are not extremely sheltered. Yes luckily, homeschooling is not allowed in Germany. My former church wants to build a private school for their children but I am not sure what the chances are of them legally doing so.
Thank you for your kind words!❤ I definitely have my safe people, and feel like you guys on YT are becoming a sort of community🥰

Thanks for the recommendation, I just watched her TED talk, I know the Netflix documentary on the FLDS church and seeing she was one of the wives of Warren Jeffs? That is insane. Really admiring how much strength she has to go public with her story, what she went through is really horrifying! Him sending people to abuse her with the goal of taking her legal rights away? So crazy how much abuse people can justify in the name of religion 🥺 but truly inspiring how she turned Warren Jeff’s mansion into a safe house for women and children!
Thank you so much for your compassion, you are right that it’s not easy to speak up since there is still so much anxiety, shame and guilt programming when talking badly about them. But knowing it might help others makes it worthwhile. Sending you warm greetings from the South of France!💕

Just chiming in with another: It is so good that you have made this video. This is the only way people like me, who have not been near fundamentalist religion, cults or sects gets any awareness about it. Indeed because like you state, these communities normally close themselves to the rest of society either completely or partially. So unless something really extreme happens, us from the outside has almost no way of knowing the very real abuse that goes on.

If you do make more videos I am interested to hear how you left/feel about leaving? And if you have supports and feel safe of course. I was never in a cult but I was groomed and I feel so guilty still for never reporting it or coming forward until it was too late because I know the person who gr00med me probably had more victims but at the same time we are also victims (you in the cult and I from this person).
I know as well that its almost impossible for cults to exist without eventually turning the victims into the persecutors (the group harassment and fear I guess that was indoctrinated.)
Also, I'm very proud of you for being here and discussing this topic even though its very heavy. Please always take care of yourself and put your well being first 💜

And yes, I can definitely share more about how I left and my feelings around that. Knowing that there are people like you who are interested in these stories and can relate in different ways really encourages me.

I have always been, and probably always will be, fascinated by cults and how they work (shoutout to Cultish by Amanda Montell for a lot of good information)humans always have been and always will be a social creature. We will always seek a sense of belonging and purpose - the vast amounts of religions throughout history should prove that enough. The mention of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt reminds me a lot of the quote from Fleabag (which I think is also in Cultish? Been a good minute since I’ve touched either one): “I want someone to tell me what to wear every morning. I want someone to tell me what to eat. What to like, what to hate, what to rage about. What to listen to, what band to like. What to buy tickets for. What to joke about, what not to joke about. I want someone to tell me what to believe in. Who to vote for and who to love and how to tell them. I think I just want someone to tell me how to live my life, Father, because so far I think I’ve been getting it wrong.” I hope she and every other person survivors, if that’s the right word, knows how brave they are.
How and why people who feel the same need for connection, compassion, and answers for the “why” of it all do this to their fellow man is…. beyond me. It never fails to be so… heartbreaking, to put it very lightly, hearing the stories of the people who got out, hearing just how awful humanity can be to each other in the name of control. sitting here listening to her, seeing her eyes darting around as her voice shakes during certain moments like she’s afraid someone is going to come through her door, it makes me wonder if any of the ones pulling the strings behind these things ever felt regret. or anything even remotely resembling compassion or anything warm for their fellow people.

So brave of you to speak out on this cult, especially as there are few or any other ex-members helping expose them. I'm an ex-cult member myself (a quite different one being a pseudo-Hindu meditation sect). Do get yourself involved with other ex-members of cults (not necessarily the one one you were involved in), as they will help protect you from counter-criticism and angry reaction from the cult and help you see that you were very much not alone in your experiences. As you outlined the church's practices, I saw little original in their doctrines - they are a sect that 'syncretises (takes bits of teachings from other cults and sects to put out as their own brand). Cults often borrow from each other. I would like to have seen more on how you grew disillusioned enough to break free. Many get out of cults only when outsiders help them break out - getting away by yourself (or possibly with other disillusioned members) is a rarer thing and especially for a second generation member like yourself (someone raised from infancy or birth in the cult rather than someone recruited and brainwashed in later in life (first generation recruits). I hope your work here encourages others in this and other cults to speak out and break free too.

I'm a Baha'i which has no clergy but am in a minority which understands that, despite being a new revelation with the Logos having appeared in Baha'u'llah in the 19th c., the Faith has already become apostate. However, the Writings themselves are so rich that not having a community of believers is not a problem. If you study sacred text in the spirit in which they were written, you will be rewarded.

I totally believe you. One Thing I have to say though: like with many churches, it depends on the people in power whether they have really understood the Christian faith or instead abuse it to harm people. There are loving examples of this denomination but I can imagine several abusive congregations existing. Cults and abuse unfortunately always leech off dedicated and idealistic people and twist everything into an abusive mess 😢

Absolutely, there are definitely different degrees within this denomination. This has been my experience with the one I grew up with as well as the many others in the Network that I visited. Even there, I do not believe the leaders intent to cause any harm to people. Many really come off as genuine, which does not make the impact of it any less damaging though. Honestly, I am not sure about the differences between those groups, the ones I attended always had a “Bethaus” sign on the outside while calling themselves Brüder-Baptistengemeinde.

We were not allowed to dance. Men could not have beards. Women could not wear pants, color their hair, wear jewelery of any kind including wedding rings. You could not watch or particiapte in sports. You could not drink or go to bowling alleys. Dating was allowed, but stigmatized so dating was called courting rather than dating, if you had to date mulitple people is was kind of frowned upon.
