VIA RAIL Business Class in Canada - Are Trains Better than Flying?

  • To get from point A to point B shouldn't always have to go by plane. After my good friend Alex Praglowski had a really good experience with Via Rail, and I had to travel from Toronto to London as well, I decided not to fly, and to take a train instead. This had a couple of advantages for my trip: I could spend more time in the city, it was cheaper and it was more comfortable. With a price difference of just $30 from Economy, I decided to go all in and get a business class fare for $85 CAD, which considering flying in Canada being really expensive, is really cheap.
This was a fun little experiment to see if I like trains and to see what it's like to make a trip report of something else than an aeroplane. Let me know in the comments down below, is this worth doing again?

What do you think? Should I do more train trip reports in the future, or should I stick with planes? Let me know! 👇

That was really good! $85 for business class seems quite cheap!

Thanks!! $85 is really good value, that’s about €55!

Great video - great choice for background music!
Too back the passenger rail system in Canada is only a fraction of what it once was.
I wonder if trains will see an uptick in passengers since the airline industry is rock bottom now...your train looked quite busy.
I say, if you can jump on a train and make a video, go for it!

Thanks! I actually swapped the first sound out last minute, what made the editing process take a lot longer, but I am really happy with the result, so thank you for noticing. I live in Alberta, where the only train we see here is the Canadian. It would be amazing to jump on it, but I'd love to do it all the way from east to west.

Looked great. Ever think about Paris to London through the Chunnel?

I’ve always wanted to try that, but I’ve never really been into trains. Maybe next time, sounds interesting!

I love union station! I go through the station everyday for university classes before in person classes got cancelled! Great report Robin! Btw, where'd you go after arriving in London?

Thanks! Happy that you liked it! Union station looks amazing from the inside. I took Swoop back to Edmonton, but since I have reviewed swoop a few times already, I didn’t make a video of that flight.

The Canadian is definitely something you should try. Make sure you have lots of time because it is notoriously late. That notwithstanding, it is a trip of a lifetime that you will never forget.

Yeah I would have to take a week off work, so I'll have to plan that far in advance. (and save up for it!)

Really awesome! I generally use VIA Rail only to places that are pretty much unreachable by plane, like Kingston. Otherwise, on a well-travelled corridor like Montreal to Toronto, I'd fly, and the A220 entices me to fly even more often on the corridor, if not for the pandemic. Of course, don't fall into the trap of travelling by Megabus. Poorly managed, terrible service, not to mention having experienced a racist attack by one of their staff!
Also, being someone used to railways and trains in Britain, I find Canadian trains quite unusual and interesting.

Perhaps you and Alex can do the Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver together and have a joint trip report? Or maybe you guys can do it in the opposite direction?

Alex and I were both on the inaugural Air Canada A220 flight, so technically we've done a going trip already. But doing the Canadian together sounds like a lot of fun!

Well made video! I think you summarized it pretty well as far as Canada is concerned (and the US). The distances are simply to large for trains to be an alternative to planes, except on certian routes. With that being said, a high speed network on Canada's eastcoast, maybe even connected to the US would be a gamechanger. But I don't see the political support for such a large infrastructure project. So trains in America will probably remain a niche market.

Thanks! I am happy to hear your like my first train video. Trains are great for cargo on long distances, not so much for passengers. In a country like France and Spain however, the distances are perfect for train travel!

Always wanted to do The Canadian, but it's very expensive. I find Amtrak much more reasonably priced as far as North American business (sleeper) class. And of course, nothing compares to Asian and European trains.

    • @Vuelogs
      @Vuelogs  4 года назад

It really is expensive. I haven’t been on many trains yet, so maybe one day!

Vuelogs I have done the Canadian 130 times and although it can be expensive there are deals to be had and the via preference program helps to offset the costs associated to taking the Canadian in sleeper class. Also although VIA‘s reservation system automatically allocates a seat number and car number you CAN change your seat preference by calling their customer service line with your booking reference and they can change your seat based on availability

Thanks Ross, that’s a lot of times!! Is that all the way from east to west?
