Jonathan Graham Walt Disney was a good man but the thing was that if your working for him, he expects something out of you as one of his animators. As an animator you have to show you are an animator who can draw & make art, sketch, stories & not some person who makes silly sketches & cartoons on just paper. And just cause he didn’t have many diversity employees, that doesn’t make a racist, he just hired the BEST animators. Tho he did have a couple of Jewish & an African American employee.

I am now 66 years old, I have lived longer than Walt Disney did. He made my childhood better and my life to. That you Walt for all those wonderful memories, dreams and feelings. I often wish upon a star cause I know it makes no difference who you are. R.I.P.

I worked for Disneyland years ago. I was told that some of the cast members were acting up and Walt fired their manager instead of them, saying that he was not doing his job to manage them. He was a wonderful businessman! He had a vision and carried it through to completion. He also knew where weaknesses were and dealt with it at the source rather than the surface.
I would fire most of HR if I were to become CEO of a major corporation.

Walt Disney was a perfectionist who probably expected everyone to be the same way. Most of his employees respected and admired him. There are always some people, in a huge corporation like his, that will have something negative to say about their boss and unfortunately this video only reflects their negative opinions about Walt Disney. For me, all we have to do is watch and admire what he accomplished. Kids around the world love everything that he created and to me that is the bottom line. This man was a creative genius who was way ahead of his time, I doubt there will ever be another one like him.

What you stated is EXACTLY the point. Walt Disney was a perfectionist. He had a realization of what the medium of animation could be beyond what it was. He had a vision and leadership that brought higher standards and a greater realization of what animation could be. Not everyone who worked in the business had a total realization of constructing a film, which requires a special sense. So many artists are focused on what they do that they can sometimes forget the purpose of what they do. Walt sometimes hurt people's feelings when he took out story sketches or sequences because he saw that they were not helping advance the film. As I was told by the late Ford Banes who worked there during the 1930s,
Walt had an uncanny talent for reading a storyboard and knowing where the attention needed to be. What people may not know have known was that he had a form of dyslexia.
Berny Wolf, who animated some of the scenes of Jiminy Cricket in PINOCCHIO told me a story of his reworking a scene in the Silly Symphony, ELMER THE ELEPHANT. It was the scene after Elmer leaves Tillie Tiger's Birthday Party after being teased about his trunk. He looks up and sees a row of four pelicans with a Jimmy Durante persona. Seeing the first Pencil Test, Walt exclaimed, "Who did THAT?" Berny sunk down into his seat and in a timid voice said, "I did." Walt turned to him with the scowl and raised eyebrow saying, "You know better than that." He reworked it 13 times and finally flopped the drawings, had them reshot and reversed the action. Walt said, "Finally!"

The man worked hard for children, giving them wonderful films made with the imagination. We see only half of this in Turkey. Especially in new productions, such a thing is almost non-existent. Walt, like most businessmen, wanted everything to go perfectly.

But as hard as he was on the artists apparently he regularly awarded them with financial bonuses when they met or exceeded his expectations. He was a perfectionist. I've heard he was hard to work with but he knew what he wanted and, hey, it showed in his work.
He had his name on it, his reputation was at stake. He obviously was a hard ass, but you look at his movies from Steamboat Willy to The Jungle Book, the last one he made during his life, you see his influence. He paid the people who created his ideas, he had the right to want it his way.
They all worked together. And threw ideas around. And the last movie live action movie Walt Disney worked on was The Happies Millionaire and Jungle Book was his last animated movie.

But as the Producer, what he produced was a reflection of his vision, and he guided and inspired his people in reaching that. Frankly, there was some flawed logic in SNOW WHITE and PINOCCHIO that was the result of Walt's "thinking" that no one ever mentions. And those films continue to be regarded as classics. So when you work for someone else, remember you are their to carry out the mission of the company. If you want to promote your own agenda, start your own company.
I believe Walt Disney was a good man who only wanted his employees do their best but also expected them to achieve the goals he had set and to succeed. He only wanted nothing but the very best from them.

Walt Disney was a man. Humans aren't perfect. In fact we're often quite bad to others and even ourselves. That doesn't mean we can't be a part of making good things. It also doesn't mean we should forget Walt's flaws or how many people held him up on the way to the top. See him as a man, not an idol, and you'll see all the ugliness that makes up a real person - which is kind of beautiful in its own way.

As a boy, I saw both Disney brothers together, Walt and Roy, in Burbank at a Disney shareholders meeting my parents took my brothers, sister and me to. They were walking down Mickey Mouse Avenue and Dopey Drive at Disney Studio. Walt was a showman: he didn't attend the meeting itself inside the auditorium (his brother Roy was the one who chaired the meeting inside) but he made sure everyone saw him outside before the meeting started. During the meeting, Walt appeared only on film that was shown in the auditorium. Sort of like the Wizard of Oz: you knew Walt was on the lot because you saw him but you didn't see him in the flesh (only on film) during the actual meeting itself.
He was certainly a performer at all times.
I'm in no way related to Walt Disney or the Disney family but being a huge fan I call him " Uncle Walt"
When I was kid, watching him speak to the viewer on TV before the showing of a Disney presentation, I also thought of him that way. That was the persona he presented. I was very young and impressionable, figured he worked to produce great things for us kids to enjoy, so what else could I think?

I don't think that's a dark side, he was a determined entrepreneur. He teaches his employees strict so that they understand better (that's one of the reasons why he is strict). As an entrepreneur or someone like him, namely as a producer, animator and bussinesman, surely some people are strict with employees and that is a normal thing. I love his nature and he has become himself. I will never forget this legend he has inspired me.

I like the fact he expected from his employees what he expected from himself. He had standards and it was his company.

Some of the best bosses I have had were just like him in regards to this video.
The key was taking the best pints from each boss and discarding the bad attributes and collating and using all the best methods in the correct way and to whom.
Look, let's clear some things up.
DISCLAIMER: Racism and smoking are not being put into question as they wee common in Walt's time.
1. People have to understand that if you worked for Walt Disney, you're not just some animator. He expects creativity and a great mind out of you if you're working as an animator or story writer. He says "That'll work" in the context that everything can be better than what it is. That was Walt's motto.
2. Walt isn't the only one to do this kind of thing. He of course needs a public persona that's cherry and kind hearted, and a work persona that's stern and serious. Steve Jobs did the exact same thing. And Steve had his employees FIGHTING him. Many people do that. Walt isn't the first, and was far from the last.
3. Honestly, I think it's good in some context that he did this. Nobody is gonna watch the movies or visit the theme parks ran by a typical boss man.
he was not like steve jobs. He was creative and paid his employees the best AND acknowledged them.
The were given more money when they improved abd were well looked after. Women and those who never knew a thing about the industry were allowed to start from the bottom, gain experience and move up.
He was the boss and firm when he Had to be. He was a boss in a million actually. That much ia obvious.
What I'm saying is Walt WASN'T a typical boss man. I may have made it seem like that in my comment but he wasn't. However he was a bit more stern and serious away from the public eye. Still it was a persona you could learn to love. And yes six flags is ran by typical bossmen. But Disney was more than just an amusement park. It was an entertainment company, a huge one even now. It needed a face and that face was Walt. Six flags doesn't have the heart created in Disney parks. Almost incomparable. And I agree Steve doesn't deserve the comparison. I was saying Steve has done it with WAY WORSE results, including physical encounters.
He had those similarities to a boss. He expected the best. However, he made sure they knew what WAS the best. For ever scene of every movie and every building of every park, he have a detailed description of what he personally imagined. He made up the ideas, and made sure people knew what he meant. Hell, he ACTED OUT the entire Snow White story in front of his animating team. He was probably the best boss you could ever have. He knew human limitations, allowed time for relaxation and made the building perfect for the working environment. But he didn't allow slacking, and expected his men to produce. Steve Jobs however was different. He just barked and yelled commands and embarrassed anyone that couldn't go through. Had people working 72 hours straight. Keeping them from family. Risking health. I hate these kinds of videos. People just can't get over the simple fact: Walt is probably the most successful man ever. Not just achievements, but he has an almost squeaky clean background. These conspiracy theorists trying to dig dirt that was never there.
The funny thing about Walt is he thought outside the box, but it really only took simple thinking, but his bright imagination and drive really made it work. Up to the point of Mickey, the only real innovations in animating were different complicated styles of animation and drawing. You'd think Walt would create his own complicated system, like Einstein and Jobs have done with their innovations. Nope. Simply just "I want it with sound". "I want it with color". "I want it to be feature length". It's THAT kind of straightforward thinking that got him to the top. He was very insightful, with the small motions of his characters and bits and details of his parks, but he was never one to overcomplicate to an extreme. He made sure Main Street wasn't filled with architectural masterpieces and just simple buildings, because he wanted it to look like a regular street. Walt knew that simplicity was the best form of complication, if that makes any sense.

I like how all the interview clips they roll are clearly from people who see Walt fondly and respect him but also recognize that he was made of stern stuff, so the editors have to chop up their interviews (Showing the most critical parts) to try and convey the narrative THEY want to portray of Walt Disney rather than the interviewees.

How is this a bad thing? Walt Disney, without being a fantastic businessman as well as one with a stunning imagination, would not have seen success. He was precise, he had high expectations of his workers. He had a vision and he knew he would make it happen if he had a cooperative team. You have to trust the man behind the mouse... If you did something wrong he would tell you, if you had to get something done he would tell you to get it done without a fuss. Like it or not, that's how you run a business, even if it is one that makes films for children. I admire Walt for being like this with his workers. It shows prestige, dedication, and talent beyond what he could draw and imagine. He was simply a genius in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
Every company needs discipline like mine.
In other words Walt was human but over all he was a good person that was driven with a vision or dreams he wanted to create and he did.
Back in high school I had a teacher who had worked with Disney. He said he was a kind man and really cared about people.

I loved Walt Disney. I was there on Opening Day in 55. His crew thought he was nuts and about to lose his money. For one thing, he gave Disneyland to me. He said Disneyland is your land as he looked down at me (age 3). I've always thought of Disneyland as mine ever since. I published a book about Disneyland on themepress called "My Disney Side".
Not fully aware that he left the earth in 1966, people hate & link what his company morphed into. The Disney name has become synonymous with tourist based urban renewal (a la eminent domain) that displaces impoverished people who are barely able to survive as it is. (A lot like the colonists did to native American's) Todays biz style was something he had nothing to do with. He left half his wealth to a charitable trust and a lot of land for a school to be built on. Hes a hero.

I have no respect for the people commenting on Disney's character, other than those who actually worked with him. -Even detractors like animator Bill Melendez, who vented spleen because of how Disney handled the studio strike. But biographers are far from clinically impartial. They are strategists for writing books that sell and to elevate their own profile. Walt was like a symbol of a kind of American politic. You learn more about writers' own axe to grind in biographies about Disney, than the unimpassioned and objective witness. They tend to select material to pin him into a corner that reflects an unsophisticated man, who was insensitive and, to the next level, racist or whatnot. It solidifies a lead character in fiction to do so but such liberties shouldn't happen in biographies. I would say Schickel is the prime example of that kind of author. "The Disney Version" is less a biography than an excuse to proclaim the ascendancy of 60s cultural changes and use Disney as a punch bag of so-called WASP America. But what a great thing it is to have amongst other surviving colleagues, a Black man and a Jewish guy just telling it like it is. A story of Walt Disney, a human being with flaws for sure but without the deliberate insinuating drama that makes books sell.

The story of Walt Disney's posthumous messages to his executive staff is true.
My photography instructor at Laney College in Oakland,CA was William High. He was a camera man at Disney for many years before and after Walt's passing. He shot the films of Walt addressing his staff. Actually there were 3 sets of films. A master film, which was shown to the entire executive staff immediately after his funeral. YES, THEY HAD ASSIGNED SEATS. Another set of short 5-minute reels shown to each member of his staff after Walt had been gone 6 months. And a final set of reels, also made for each individual exec, shown at the 2 year anniversary of Walt's death.
I did not see any of these reels, but if a complete archive of Walt's materials is available I'm pretty sure they will be there. My instructor, William High, had no reason to lie about this point. He was the camera man.
Walt Disney was an extremely complex character in his life and many really didn't understand him then. But, one thing was always true. Walt was creative. I'm a lifelong Disney fan and Modern Disney is a soulless husk. Walt would be livid if he saw Disney now.
A lot of people like Walt Disney or Steve Jobs do have two personas, the one the public knows about and behind the scenes. Both were creative geniuses and made revolutionary products when they where alive. Both apple and Disney still do. Both Disney and Jobbs were also very hard to work for and expected the best. Both weren’t not so nice guys when the camera was not around either. I know that Disney or apple would not be where they were in the world today as big companies if the founders were not the way they were.
All those Disney movies you grew up watching in your childhood it was because of him if he never created the Walt Disney company your childhood would have maybe lost something great

"Nobody does stuff on the level that he does as a good-natured, sweetheart of a guy." Theres so much truth and profundity there, that it makes me emotional. Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Michael Jordan, etc. You need both sides to achieve the level these men were on. One side is is usually passionate and likeable, and the other is unreasonable and mission-based (unlikeable). That combination, along with a very focused sense of awareness, equals success.

It’s very easy to narrate a story based upon people’s prospectives and story’s they have had personally with someone like Walt Disney.

I don't think very badly of Walt Disney at all. I've learned quite a lot about him, and how he was very hard to please. One of the coolest things I learned about him, was how he was the very first voice actor for Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and I think a couple others. Such an amazing man, for sure. He has, literally, a towering reputation, and had jobs both in front of and behind the camera. Walt Disney was really a talented person, in my own opinion.
