Palestinian here (who has lived in the UK and Palestine - both Jerusalem and the West Bank). Here's my insight:
A little clarification on "the country is one". When Palestinians say this what they often mean is that all dates (produced by Israeli or Palestinians) are Palestinian dates - often in context that the Prophet PBUH blessed the produce of the Levant. I've not heard this particular phrase before, so assuming it's mistranslation occuring due to the language barrier.
Additionally, the attitude to purchasing Israeli products differs between the West Bank and Jerusalem. There are too many reasons to go into detail but the major reason is simply due to the difficulty in importing from the West Bank into Jerusalem. Not sure why the brother suggested that was a minority reason. If you visit the markets in the Old City the majority of produce is produced by Palestinian farms (including dates) - this is where local Jerusalemite Palestinians often buy their produce (as opposed to stores).
Additionally, Jerusalem (inc. East Jerusalem) is under Israeli jurisdiction - at some point you're finances contribute to Israel whether it's your bank, taxes, etc. and as such there's slightly more desensitisation. This isn't to say they don't care, but moreso that $1 of dates does less harm than $50 of taxes and if they need to purchase produce to cook for their families - they aren't in as privileged of a position we in the UK are. In other words, choice is a matter of class at a greater degree than in the UK.
In the West Bank, however, you will notice an abundance of people consciously and subconsciously boycotting Israeli products. This isnt necessarily because they're more expensive there, on the contrary they are often cheaper, but rather those in the West Bank easily supply their own goods (shops arent filled with 80%+ Israeli products, unlike in Jerusalem). Palestinians in the West Bank often utilise Palestinian banks, most of their taxes go to the the PA, etc. which leads to Israeli products being the "odd one out".
In short, it's all about the privilege of choice. It's not that Jerusalemite Palestinians don't care - on the contrary, they've experienced distress, intimidation, murder, but rather they aren't in the positon us in the UK are in. The comparison that comes to mind is for a UK shopper to swap out all their shopping for certified, organic animal cruelty-free and FairTrade products. Not everyone can afford that.

Whilst I implied it above, to clarify - the majority of Palestinians (both in Jerusalem and the West Bank) earn significantly less than their Israeli equivalent. That is why choice is often an illusion as opposed to a reality for many families.

Israeli dates are soggy. I don't like soggy dates. Arab dates are the best.
