I kept about 90% of my dslr bodies that I have acquired over the years. I use mirrorless mostly but I always go back to using my older dslr bodies, just for the experience that new photographers may not ever get to know.

For the real feeling, just shoot Film - it's some kind of magic! I must say, never stopped it, only into between, due to high cost. But when i click the shutter on one of my fave 35mm SLRs - nothing compares with digital, ever. Never. From the haptics, the feeling, the emotional component - the anticipation about the final negatives...nothing does beat film.

Exactly. I've sold my EOS R, and went back to my old 5d mk1 for pure joy of thinking & exposing slowly before clicking, after finding out I still used old camera more often, than new one. As long as I don't need exact AF or high ISO for commercial, I find it more fun the old way. I know 5dmk1 is far less superior camera than R but still, using new tools feels like playing game on cheat codes. You've got the result but fun goes away somehow.

Yes, have it since 2012. 40mm is my #2 spot focal length, after 35mm all the time since the late 80s. 50mm is too narrow, too much a limit, to shoot it all. With 35mm, one can do 90% of anything, and everything. Architecture, Landscape, Objects, Portraits, etc.

Thanks for your work, Leigh. I recently looked at some photographs taken with a 5D lll camera and commented on the "look" of the photos when compared to my OM1, it's hard to explain, but I'm really intrigued, I don't believe it's post processing though. You spoke about a "different look" from the camera you used so maybe it's that. I wont be changing systems, but I will follow it up.
By the way, you took a chance with your self confessed click bait title. The response to photographers changing the camera brand is just crazy! Happy photography.

There's definitely something about how the processor deals with the sensor image to produce the raw files in the older cameras that has been lost over technical purity these days. Is it better than the older cameras? I'm not entirely sure!

@@LeighWPhotos No, oh my god no! This all fails the blind test, there is no any magic there. These are all prejudices and illusions, like almost any talk about "color science". People see it when they want to see it, although 90% of all the color differences discussed on the Internet are in white balance and tone, the remaining 10% are a few points in the HSL tab in lightroom.
Damn, if you convinced someone to trade in a lightweight, comfortable, fun to use camera that always focuses accurately and has almost no dust problems for a piece of junk from 2005 - that's terrible! RP is a great tool to really take with you and take pictures, in this regard RP is many times superior to any 5D. Choosing 5d instead of rp is choosing cult over reason.
I understand that making content about "legendary" cameras is easy and convenient and this format plays on pleasant strings in the human soul, your desire to quickly shoot a video with a hyped title is starting to cause real harm. People are throwing away great cameras for 100 year old junk that if they're lucky will be able to focus at least on the center point in AF-S mode.

The M50 is a fine camera but a completely different experience to the 5D. If I was looking for something to get started in, I would consider something like the 5D MK2 or 80D for a crop sensor. The M50 is part of Canon's older mirror less system that never really got the attention or lenses it needed to compete with the rest of the market sadly.

Hi Leigh, what a refreshing video to see someone going back to basics with photography. Whilst i appreciate all cameras these days are mini computers in the hand , i think om systems and Panasonic are maybe pushing the limits of computational photography too far. That said, i won't be getting rid of my om 1 mk 1 any time soon, but don't think I'll be investigating in the system in the future. Definitely sticking with my original OM-1 as the update is more of a feature increment and like you say we may get some of the upgrades in a firmware update. I think the main reason for the new release was the need to freshen up the line, and also lose the Olympus moniker as the licencing would be an extra cost that OMDS could do without. For now though, I'm more than happy with the results I get from my OM-1 and certainly won't be changing any time soon - unless I get a freebee!!

From what I understand it doesn't actually matter what type of sensor is in the camera, it's more to do with the architecture within the camera and how it processes colour information, the earliest digital cameras were still trying to emulate film colours because at the time it was still considered superior. You can see this with the Olympus e-1 VS later bodies which still had ccd sensors but lacked the filmy-ness of the e-1 and had more modern colour interpretation.

It's only got a few focus points but they are still excellent by today's standards even tracking flying dragonflies (see the old video I uploaded 15 yrs ago some of those were with the classic 5D in servo mode others taken on the 1dmk3. I agree the shutter sound is nice and confident. My recent Canon R7 mech shutter sounds awful I use it in electronic shutter. Looking to move to Nikon Z8 I was tempted by the OM1 for wildlife but I have better Canon lenses and the reach factor of M43 is now bettered by the 32.5MP R7 (slightly higher pixel density) plus I can use the 300mmF2.8LIS it's a notch above the 300mmF4 for the OM even the super expensive OM 150-400mmF4.5 @£6700. And of course all the other "professional" photo friends of his also agreed that there must be something mentally wrong with the Coca-Cola execs because it is such a beautiful photo. Yongnuo? Not nearly good enough. I had the first three versions. Nice kit but the mirror slap and multiple lenses were a big downside.

I've bought my #1 5D into early 2008, some months, before the 5D II came to life. I prefer simplicity over 2546 Menues, with 23 sublevels each one. I also can't think (even i have that kind of gear, though) of replacing any OVF based (D)SLR with a EVF, because for my eyes, that pretty much sucks. Shooting since the early 80's, as kid. 10D to 50D, 5D(II) Not counting other brands. The title is clickbait, honestly.

      @LeighWPhotos  5 месяцев назад +1

Still a great shooting experience aren't they? Definitely keeping my 5D for as long as it's working/repairable!

@@LeighWPhotos You're out of luck - Canon isn't servicing the 5D original anymore, that's what i've received from official Canon repair store, many years ago. I was lucky, received the so called MirrorFix into 2012 for free, on two 5Ds.
Honestly, you're one out of 50586 YT'bers, praising the 5D. No hard feelings. 😎Thing is, i wouldn't buy the 5D anymore nowadays - 1) you can't, simply cannot read out the taken actuations (only Canon can, for real) and 2) without the Mirrorfix (Canon Service Advisory March 2009) and unknown shots being taken - it's all a hit & miss, i'd never buy a 5D again, from a private, trustful person - friends. Not off ebay, strangers, etc. because of that. 3) Original batteries after up to 19 years almost are simply crap,
one does need to buy a decent 3rd party BP-511A replacement, i'd recommand Patona Pro (green label) or Protect (yellow) as well as Baxxtar Pro series (red) as substitute only, since i do have experience for 18-20 years with these brands. Usually, very good, for 1/3 of the original battery price.
Second, i know the 5D since it's release, being grown up and being shooting since spring 84, when i was as kid, with film of course. And last, but not least - second hand prices of the 5D raised a lot, thanks to all these UberTubers here, as i am used to say, which continue for clicks all couple months and through all the time, to release new videos about the 5D.🙂
Into short - someone which is a absolute beginner, starter into photography - the 5D isn't the right choice, i'd say. You should learn from the pike up, which means, 35mm film SLR, 50 or 35mm focal length, and learn the basics of the exposure triangle - aperture, shutterspeed iso. Because into the end, this leads to much better compositions, simply as that.
The Gen-Z and others are usually just phone snappers, so not being used to real gear. And also beginners don't need, or want to buy (used) L-glass, to get the most out of that old 5D.
For instance, any 30D to 50D which comes way cheap nowadays (bought them all into their heyday - 10D to 50D, as well as other gear) with a matching 24/2.8 STM (36mm in FF terms) is a good, small combo, pancake-esque, which could being bought very cheap off the web. Its never the gear, talking about composition.
Into the end, whileas the colors are not true to life (the original 5D pushes a bit hard the reds, blues) i do like the outcome still, and into the end - that's why i shoot since ever with nowadays called "vintage" lenses - all glass and metal only, no AF, no micro motors, which would mostly fail over time..even after decades...character lenses are much better, if the image does have soul, instead of clinical sharpness.
Nowadays, current gear is 1) way expensive 2) less updated as into the 2010's for instance 3) virtual, it does look all the same...nowadays, because the IQ differs only from the internal processing/color science, and the matching system lenses - many brands use Sony Sensors, so if you compare your Pentax, Sony, Olympus, Nikon, etc....the difference is not too big, just like some 15-20 years ago...with digital gear.

Touting yongnuo lenses is a blemish on otherwise fine video. As cheap as real Canon fifties are available I don't understand why you would pick a new chynese knock off over a fine used real thing. I have two 5D's and use them both with genuine Canon lenses. BTW the pictures you showed shot w/ yongnuo don't look that good.
