It's a good starting point, but it would be interesting if they unbolted the complete IRS (since they designed the mounts to allow that) and weighed the final result.

It must be nice to be able to do anything to a truck with unlimited money unlimited tools unlimited help and unlimited intertanment love it pretty cool ranger
the rear diff and leaf springs you took out of the ranger are unsprung weight. because the irs components bolt directly to the frame, those components are sprung weight. that moves the center of gravity towards the rear of the truck.
Intersting. I know the late 90s cobra irs were plauged by wheel hop. Occasionally grenading the rear end gears due to shaking from the tires bouncing up and down on a hard launch. I personally witnessed this at Ennis, Tx. With a stock supercharged 98 cobra. Wheel hop and broke the gears. All in seconds.

@@youtubeisbroken241 I'm gonna have to agree. It's not that I'm a Chevy guy, but the Ford setups for alot of cars and trucks are damn near one offs and it's hard to find parts or aftermarket items from a company that deals in 1 to 1 1/2 year breaks. I prefer Chevy swaps because of the cost and nothing but the cost. Ford swaps are just too damn expensive and I actually like my family being able to eat. This setup is really gonna be shock dependent. If you miss the mark on shocks, this thing is gonna skate rather than track straight. I'm interested with what they are going to do with shocks away bars.
Guys, you missed a couple steps. A HUGE advantage of IRS vs solid axle is sprung weight. The weight of the axle has to rebound from bumps along with the wheels and tires, which the IRS avoids because the weight of the differential is suspended from the body having no affect on sprung weight. Also, threaded sway bar end links are only used to adjust “preload” for circle track. Anyone on a road course or autocross would use them to remove preload and make the sway bar neutral at ride height.
I have a solid mounted 7.5” diff and all delrin bushings in my track car, the gear noise from the diff comes right through the car. The delrin bushings on the suspension are great though.
I know a manual transmission is called a stick shift but every automotive publication in the world calls it a solid rear axle. motor trend, car and driver road and track etc. The car manufacturers themselves called a solid rear axle. My father worked for a few auto manufacturer. He used to build and race hot rods. I never once heard him or any of his friends refer to it as a stick rear axle.

You guys have / had full control to mount the cradle in any fashion you desired, but didn't mention if you added "Anti-Squat" angle into the mounting and welding... which would be about 2 to 3 degrees of what would look like caster.. plus, street driving will ride much better, on oddity's in the road ways... just saying... or maybe you guys did ,and just didn't mention it...??? either way, still fun brought back allot of memories.. more over, these IRS installed in my 85 Thunderbird turbo coupe...

Those stock 98 cobra irs rear ends are terrible at drag racing. The suffer from wheel hop and sometimes grenade the rear gears. However they work great modified in autocross.
no 96-98 mustang came with IRS, only the 99-04 cobras came with them. The one they have is the 03-04 terminator IRS that only suffers from wheel hop. They have the much stronger 31 spline LSD, the only thing they needed to correct wheel hop was the subframe/control arm bushings.

Anybody know how to lift mustang IRS? I’m looking to make my ranger a pro-4 style truck with full independent suspension and I want to know if swapping a mustang rear or expedition rear is worth it
Pro-2 and Pro-4 ... not to mention trophy trucks use solid rear axles with a very low anti-squat ratio on the suspension setup. On a ladder frame truck, stick with a solid axle. IRS suspensions from production vehicles lack the suspension travel and suspension geometry for the levels of performance you're looking for. If you want to go IRS, get a 9" IRS center chunk and fabricate the suspension as needed for your application, wheelbase and akerman angle. There is A LOT more to making a offroad worthy IRS suspension then just bolting stuff on.
Just adding my 2 cents. When GM or Ford do a prototype. Like the ZR1 powered camaro. They spend all that money and labor. Test it, then the entire car is crushed. Very few escape that fate.

the stock diff and springs gave the truck a high roll center in the rear. irs puts the roll center much lower by design.
