Over 50 years in the game, and I've owed bikes with keihin, Bings, Amal, Mikuni, lectron, SmartCarb and a couple I can't even pronounce. The Keihin and SmartCarb are by far the best in my opinon. The Lectron ran fine but there was a noticeable lose in the bottom end, and the adjustment is really no quicker than changing jets. And yes the float bowl screws suck. It did adjust to altitude changes pretty well. The SmartCarb on the other hand, added a bit more hit to the bottom end over the Keihin on my 2019 Beta 300. Super fast and easy to adjust, clean running, great over rev and I'm getting 20 plus percent better gas mileage. Here in Montana I ride from 3,000 to 10,000 feet. Very cold riding part of the year, pretty hot in the summer. Got it setup to my liking and haven't touched it since. Downside spendy.
The Lectron\SC2 thought has crossed my mind from time to time... but my TE runs so good and snappy on its Keihin with a JD kit I'm hard pressed to believe spending $500-700 is going to get me anything better.... Plus here in southern New England we ride only between 0-2000' I never have to think about re-jetting.
Well we're big fans of the new 2024 300RR Race. Beta is onto something with that dual spark setup. The power delivery and extended overrev on the dyno is unreal and we expect other OEMs will be taking note.
They are interesting looking carbs. I run a Lectron and IMO it does make less power then a Mikuni with the JD Kit.. however I find the byproduct is that the bike becomes very smooth and linear.. It still has plenty of bite with a clutch flick or being aggressive on the gas, but over all it makes the bike easier to ride for me. Less energy sapping overall. Oh, and I don't find the choke being on the wrong side an issue.. If I need the choke then the engine is cold.. if the engine is cold then the pipe has been cold for a lot longer. Never need the choke when the pipe is hot.
Yeah, the choke thing isn't a huge deal, Just dumb for it to be over there. The Lectrons I have owned were fine but I like the stock carbs much better. I can tune the power delivery with the power valve spring and spend the $450 on tires and gas. But if someone just doesn't want to jet a bike then either the lectron or smart carb are great. Kinda like the argument about Rekluse. I personally don't want to spend the money but if that is what makes riding more fun then I am 100% behind it.
@@highlandcycles For sure. I do all my own work on my bike, from top ends to suspension servicing.. but jetting.. I hate it.. I just can't fix issues and I spend hours pulling parts on and off and I almost never can resolve the issues.. Even with a JD Kit.. I'm probably just a dumb ass, but I hate it with a passion. lol. For me the Lectron runs 90-95% great.. Thats good enough for me haha! If I could dial in a stock carb that would be my choice too.. Aftermarket carbs are way to expensive IMO.
The SC2 carbs sure are pretty from a machinist point of view. I think they are cool, will I ever own one? Probably not especially since I ride sea level to 3000 feet. I would be very curious to see a comparison from a properly tuned PWK to the smart carb though. I really can't see having much better performance than what the PWK can offer, but I may be wrong.
about how many clicks did you have to lean out before it ran good? i'm having trouble getting mine dialed in on a yz250. would you happen to remember which metering rod you're running? thanks and great video
Did you have to shave the air boot at all for the Power jet hole thingy those smart carbs have? I’ve been curious about a smart carb but have always ran lectrons. Leaning lectron with my 250x just cause I don’t want to cut up my boot.
Over 35 years in this game, and for the life of me , I cannot figure out this whole Lectron/Smart carb infatuation. They will never run as good as the PWK. There is some pretty good Dyno tests showing the lack of HP they make with these carbs vs stock.

Nice
You forgot to mention delorto in your old carb rant
😂 Every time you tell it to focus it does it on command! Hysterical!
hahhaha
Nice little rock garden behind the shop
Yep. It’s nice
Very helpful video thank you.
On the yz250 there is a tps sensor and another cable dose the smart carb not need the other cable?? 2023 yz250
Great Info...Thank You

No, it won’t. If anything they dumb them down a bit with the trade off being that you don’t have to jet it. I’d spend that money on tires and gas
Bike sounds sweet 👍
Yeah. It rips
Be interesting to try one on the new Beta 300
I’m not a big fan of

I agree
I know it’s been a year but do you remember how many clicks leaner you went before you felt it was correct?
I am not 100% sure but I feel like it was around 5

I don’t know the rod. This was a customer bike and he ordered the carb. It ended up being 4 or 5 clicks I think.

No, this one didn’t require that. Not sure if it’s because he ordered the one with the TPS.
Which is better the smart carb 2 or the new billetron from Lectron? Thanks
Smart carb
I wouldn't put electron on a wheelbarrow
trouble free - should buy a TPI - :-) Oh, I crack myself up.
Bwahahahaha
Another DNF for me today on my TPI EXC150.

Oh yeah. The deal is that people just don’t want to change jets. It’s silly if you ask me.
My 2012 300 used to run so nice and only needed a needle swap between winter/summer, thats like a 10min job.
Dont do the Reckluse
Hahaha. It’s not my bike
