It’s cool to hear a racer that actually knows about his bike and setup. I have an older SmartCarb. As not a racer, it’s nice to know I can show up and my bike will run. No matter the temp or elevation.
I've always had good luck with the Keihin carbs. I just set the float level. Run the stock pilot. 158.main. NEDJ needle, machine a half mm off the rear bottom of the slide angle. Presto. Works great from 2800 ft up to over 10,000 ft.
100% recommend the Lectron. I run the stock cable with the Lectron as i don't like the cable Lectron supply. You do need to shorten the outer so it fits however on a 2017 KTM 250/300. Smooth power and alot more over rev, less gas used. Had to richen 1/4 turn on the metering rod then haven't touched for years winter or summer, high or low. No idea why anyone would bother with TPi when two strokes run so well with alot less tech and more custom tuning options. KTM lost a customer when they went to TPi, not interested so now switched brands after almost 25 years of Orange.
I bought a lectron from slavens it has been amazing out of the box. For my 2018 ktm 300. I think i paid a bit extra but it ran perfect with no mods which is nice
I took my Mukuni carb off my 2018 KTM 300XC and fitted it with the SmartCarb. Night and day difference. Only had one issue, but it ended up being trash inside my carb. "Technology Elevated" the company who make these carbs has outstanding customer service. Honestly, with fuel injected 2 stroke bikes having some growing pains I'm glad I went the route of SmartCarb. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Cody for your review. I have seen you race enough times to know what you are looking for in a carb. My dealer Dave Turner at Get Dirty Dirt Bikes sells the Smart Carb. He only sells what works. I personally don't mind the jetting the Keihin . If I had the money I would get the Smart Carb. BTW, you are more than well spoken. You're just a normal guy explaining how they work. Good job!!
Run on with a Lectron is due to over fueling (too rich) and needs to be leaned out. And this is where most people go wrong with them thinking it's running lean but find fattening the fuel up does nothing It's hard to get your head at first when your use to traditional carburettor tuning but with a Lectron the symptoms are opposite. Run on is over fueling and spluttering/hesitant throttle is lean condition. You tune the metering rod for a good idle and then tune the power jet for you mid to top. If you idle is good then back the power jet off 1/4 turns untill bikes no longer runs on after WOT or loaded hill climbs.
Sweet, thanks for making this comparison Cody! Been wondering how these carbs compare. One issue I wanted to point out so that people don’t get confused: to adjust the metering rod in the Lectron carb, you actually turn the rod without pushing it up. Then, if you need to rotate the rod to correctly position the flat side vs the round side, you can push the rod up and rotate it without affecting the up/down position of the rod.
finished the 2020 CWIRA ice racing season on my KX 500 with Lectron. Other than adjusting the initial float level I was good to go from -10 to +40 deg races and had crisp throttle response everywhere. For me, it has been a good choice. KX 500 Eric Gorr super moto porting and pump gas head. ( probably going to recut the head for VP C12 before next season)
I run Lectron brought life to my bike and my Lectron comes with Philips head screws that hold the slide and metering rod also never mess with the float bowl on a Lectron it does not need to be touched, I ride trails and single tracks with this carb love it going up hills gives 💯 % Awesome vid tho!🎉
03 cr250r equipped with first gen lectron and it’s been perfect winter summer pinned in motocross or putting in trails on a 24hr race the bike worked amazing and not only that had the power to clear 100ft jumps and lug for 24hrs all while saving me stupid amounts of fuel. I could run 1 hour and not even go through half a tank running 32:1 93 octane pump. Insane carb.
@@TheRossillini and pulls perfect too no abrupt surge or unpredictable kick just smooth linear power and because the power is all there it just makes it like a ultra light weight 4 stroke that sounds better smells better and looks better! Can’t beat it.
As someone else said, you have the tuning backwards on the rod. So if you were trying to richen it, the way you described it, you’d actually be making it more lean. Your theory is correct, but the execution is backwards. You need to rotate WITHOUT compressing that spring and the compress it and orient the metering rod to reset its position. So you were probably making it more lean which may explain the running idle issue and “hit” you describe. The Sherco I’m riding has the most impressive bottoms end and smooth transition into powerband than any other 300 I’ve ridden...with the lectron. I did have to play around with some settings compared to the base setting however. The engine dynamic/fueling isn’t the same as the ktm for instance. But it’s running sooooo good now. Really good bottom end. I’d give the lectron another try!
Cody Richelderfer yeah I just DM’d him on IG and that’s what he said. Just wanted to make sure it was a simple mixup for the video! But it DOES match what he explains with how the tuning was affected too. Idk! Just trying to eliminate any confusion and help make a fair comparison!
Really nice video, Cody! I'm using the SC2 on my KTM 300 2017 and I love this carb! very easy to adjust on the fly if you want a leaner or richer bottom end.
Two more things why I like Smartcarb. One is no vent to the outside area. No more worry about crossing the water. The other one is the mechanical fuel auto-stop when you drop down your bike. One more good thing is drainage the residual fuel in the cup after riding is extremely easy.
@@codyjoseph44 What Made you go with the smart carb over the lectron? Easier adjust-ability or more power. What did you find it helped most with down low power better or more top end or even better both???? What bike do you have it on a 125 or a 250? This is the next upgrade I want to get because 2 smokes seem to be making a come back and this seems like a top notch mod for more power without going with a 138 kit or something.
New Keihin can be had for 220 delivered. I just did it. Plugged it in with suggested JD jets and man does it get great mileage and work great. Better mileage then a friend's lectron gets and runs crisp......................................................The trick is,you have to know what jets do,and how to jet a 2 stroke.
I always get the Lectron needle flat side facing me and than adjust with the tool but I have used just my fingers in the past. It's easy to remember left to lean and right to richen. My Keihin on my 300rr was fine but it seized up on me and I put my Lectron to use. I ran the Lectron on my Wr300 but pulled it when I sold the bike. I would like to find some thumb screws for the Lectron throttle cap. Thanks for the video.
I tried the Lectron on my 2018 Husqvarna TE150 (Mikuni was stock). The Lectron first off was a terrible fit, super long and getting the Airbox boot on was a bitch, had to basically lift the subframe up and battle it onto the carb. The Lectron guys suggested that I buy a second boot and to cut the boot down to make it fit. I bought another boot and cut it as they suggested but that failed to resolve the subframe problem. The length of the Lectron made the subframe/boot length issue a major problem. After battling to get it installed and after fiddling with the their suggested adjustments I kind of ran into the same issues you did on the Sherco and took it back off and shelved it. I purchased a Kehin from JD Jetting and I love it, easy install, minor jetting and bam it really livened up the bike. The Lectron people were not very helpful and they seem to be ok with force fitting their products, and I do mean force fitting! Interestingly I had a similar issue with a Lectron I purchased from them on a 2015 Yamaha YZ250. Although the carb fit, the length of the card was to long. I highly suggest looking at options other than Lectron.
Jaden Mitchell I have one I’d would be interested in selling. It’s a 38mm HV from slavens purchased last year. Has the 4-2m rod installed and a spare 5-1. New condition. davescott1342@gmail.com.
Same as me, I have smart carb 38 and its dimension is too long to fit an airbox, I then get back to Keihin, maybe I will try STIC and compare to smart carb.
Yes it surely is. After installing NECJ needle in my Husky TE 250 2015 Keihin PWK 38 jetting has been easy. Very good throttle response from idle to full throttle. My other bikes Husky TC 250 2018 with Mikuni TMX 38 jetting was first very bad. Way too rich and ran like shit. With GJ mods (throttle slide notch mod, drain plug holes mod and plastic jet baffle holes mod) it is also now very good carb and throttle response is awesome. Much better low end, midrange and top end power than before. I don’t need Lectron or SmartCarb in my bikes. Both Keihin PWK short body and Mikuni TMX are great carbs when these easy and cheap things are done.
Awesome video! I just installed a SmartCarb on my Beta and it's amazing so far! Love not having to pull the choke to start it cold! So very similar to my 4 stroke FI bike in regards to ease!
@@recombi123 I have mine on a 2019 300RR Race Edition. The nice thing about the SC2 is you can use your oil injection with it. Very happy with my SC2 so far.

Good vid, but to adjust the metering rod on the lectron you use their tool, make sure the rod is seated all the way down, make your quarter adjustment with the tool, take the tool off, Push the rod up with your fingers and face the flat part the correct way and.. also make sure it’s not hung up.
Cody webb actually to adjust the rod on lectron you turn it in or out without pushing up on it then you push up and turn it to get the rod facing the correct way I'm sure you know that and just said it wrong anyway I'm a huge fan always pulling for you
@@codywebb2 I am running the lectron and I have had to do more adjusting on it then I ever did on the keihin I just cant seem to get it to run the way I like I am very dissapointed if I could do it over I definitly would have went with the smart carb
Hi Cody Webb I have your old race bike but the guy that sold it to me screwed me on the pink slip. Pro circuit crf250 just saw ur RUclips thought it was funny to tell you I still got it. I can’t sell it!! 😂
Thought with the Lectron to adjust the metering rod you turn it without pushing up. Once you get it where you want you push up on the rod and face the flat part of the metering rod back towards the front. Pushing up makes it not change settings. Possible why you were having trouble fine tuning it because you thought it was richening but the setting wasn’t changing?
Best solution is a Keihin carb with a JD jetting kit for your bike. Simple, reliable and easy to tune with great support. Also fits the bike properly, unlike the Smartcarb and Lectron
chris marshall I’ve followed several threads on KTMTalk about that. Seems it can be very tricky to set up. From my experience JD is the easiest to set up and gives great results. Had all three plus a Mikuni, so I have some experience
Robert Moore they are plug and play bud. The jetting seems to work world wide and at any altitude. Everyone runs the same jetting and needle on them. Power is crazy and so responsive.
Robert Moore Tokyo off-road has some good videos on his stic set up. Which is the same as I run. Check them out if your looking for something to watch.
I have the lectron on my KTM300XC and yes it vastly improved. Paid for itself in one season in fuel savings. I am going to try the smart carb when I can ride again. But the lectron has worked very well, starting and idle has improved, warms up better. Easy to adjust.
just to make it clear and Not to put anyone off , ive got a lectron on my ktm and its been great , it took about 30 mins of testing and making it abit richer to get it 100% . its been great on the hard enduro stuff very smoothe power , the smart carb is a more modern way of the lectron , if anyone is in the market for another carb dont let any of the problems you hear of put you off buying one , they should work right out of the box and be great , but if they arent its not a huge deal to work around any of the problems that cody has described , they will run in much more conditions than a keihin can and the gas milage is great , think if i was buying again i would buy a smart carb becasue they have fixed all the little kinks that the lectron has
i got mine from slavens racing and had heaps of trouble with it.found out they had put the wrong metering rod in it for me.Got the right one in there and its amazing
do the tipover valves easily reset, they must work ok if they got smart carbs on powered paragliders? looks like maybe smartcarb2 is the best if you operate at a lot of different altitudes?
Hi Cody. Thanx for your test. I wish you could do a more detailed one just on the lectron. I have a question to the part you made the mistake you mentioned on the Lectron . I am a little bit screwed at the moment. What i recognized / where i would like to comment 1. The tool is not part of delivery. a) It must be ordered and payed separately. (At least in Germany it is this way) b) You need the tool unless you want to damage the needle with a plier. 2. Could you please explain in Detail what you are doing around 09:00 in your video. im struggling at the moment to find the ideal setup for my GasGas250: What i think: a) Explaining how leaner and richer is setup in general is fine. Works the same as in a traditional carburetor. What i think: You have to use the tool and turn the needle in unpressed condition. So if you turn the needle clockwise for 360 degree the needle will lower and the bile will be a lot leaner. Manual says: that modification shall be done in 1/4 = 90 degree steps. So if you turn it leaner or fatter for this angle the needle is NOT Showing as it should be (flat side to the engine). This is why you have to press it to unlock and than turn it to the right direction. After releasing the needle goes down an the 90 degree change is done. I do not know: a) if my description is valid. The Manual is really poor and your video is one of the best explanations b) you can ask someone to confirm this c) can he explain on how to count the rotates mentioned in the turns in the manual. For a 250cc base setup is 3-5 4 rotations. Q) Starting from completly closed (Lowering from full rich to lean) or starting from ultra lean Making it 4 Rotations fatter d) can you explain the power jet in detail. Greetings from Germany. Hope to see you soon on the bike. My problem: GasGas has 2 Ignition curves. Running single trails an being 50+ years i usually used the rain setup. Bikes runs smooth with the Keihin. Switching to Sun Mode gives this aggressive MX curve of a 250 engine, starting with no power and giving you the BANG on opening the exhaust valve. 1. After replacing the Keihin with the Lectron the bike is really running great on the summer setting. Simmilar to the original Rain Setting Very smooth and more powerfull overall. Switching to rain the bike is running poor. Seems to be much to fat in this mode. 2. I have to use the Choke on Cold engine start for some seconds even if temp is 15+ Celcius. Choke Design is trash. Position is not on original place. You can no handle the choke with gloves. I bought the addon choke cable. This works fine for me. BTW: If any of the readers or any Lectron PRO as an idea, please comment on this one. I will contact you by mail.
Hey I'm not an expert on any of these but I have a lectron and I couldn't get it to work right. I moved the metering rod a bunch. I was pushing up and turning the rod...as it turns out the doesn't change the rods position. You need to turn the rod while it's down (reason for the tool) and then push it up and put it back with the flat side towards the engine. Not sure if that was part of the issue for you but wanted to share! All amazing carbs and thank you for the review 👍
Would recommend if ur gonna submerge the carb in ultrasonic that u remove the TPS wouldn’t want any fluid intrusion into the sensor thru shaft bearing of old wire sheathing
The Mikuni block jet gasket is always pinched from the factory. Install a JD gasket, cut the slide to a 7.0 and run the JD needle, 32.5 pilot and appropriate MJ.
So after you have ran all 3, I've got a beta 300rr and I'm looking for off idle throttle response for low speed obstacles and trying to get it to behave like a trials bike. I've got my keihin setup fine now but does the lextron or smart carb offer any better very low rpm off idle performance over the keihin once they are tuned?
From experience the lectron does not! I went to keihin and has a much better low end response! You can look into the stic metering block never tried myself! I also have a rk tech head that gave me more and smoothed out the power! I have plenty of power now
Do you ever use a Air Fuel Ratio gauge to tune a keihin? Just wondering because i was going to put an fcr39 on my bike and am going to have an 02 sensor bung installed on the header pipe for tuning.
But you still have to think about it and mess with it. Beauty of a lectron or smart carb is you can put it on, maybe do some initial tuning, then forget about it. I’ve had perfect jetting on my rm250 with the Kehin and I don’t think I could have gotten better performance from anything else on that day in those conditions. But now I live in Colorado and ride track at 6k feet then trails sometimes the next day at 10-13k and it’s nice not messing with the carb.
@@johnnyellis5324 Maybe it's just me, but I can't imagine forking out $800 so I can be lazy and not spend maybe a couple of hours on my new bike to jet it right. I guess there are those people. 👍
@@Danger_mouse yeah I wouldn’t fork out $800 either, however the Lectron is $475, will almost always run better than you jetting it and I’d rather be riding than tinkering every time I want to ride high elevation
@@johnnyellis5324 That's still $650 Aussie dollars and still needs to be freighted. I'm sure both of them work well, but for me the cost isn't worth the gains. If i was to spend that much money, I'd spend a bit more and convert my bike efi 🙂
I ran the stic keihin combo. I could never make the bottom end run good . It ran like i had a rag in the air box. The manufacturer kept reccomendin larger jets and the problem got worse and worse. Good mid range and top end . If your into sand drags or hill climbing it might work but for off road or trails its a complete waste of money.
I am on my 3rd plug in 20 hours with my bike. This weekend I'm installing the Suzuki needle to see of that helps. I'm hoping it does, as theres no way I can drop that much money for a whole new system. I'm kind of assuming it's the bike screwing up at that point.
@@codywebb2 that's what I'm hoping and it's not something stupid like a loose coil or map or whatever the 19s were having issues with. Leaned out the pilot jet already and dropped a notch on stock needle. Hopefully this Suzuki needle cleans it up.
Webb you didn't mention what you end up with on the stock carb. Can you tell me pilot, nedle and main that you like the best. Having some trouble with spark plugs. 3 already with maybe 30 hrs. Thanks man Im in Texas
Based on what you said, and the fact that the SC was actually ON your bike during the video, would it be safe to say that this is the one you have chosen to run for now? Obviously the simplicity of the SC tuning was something that you thought was an advantage over the others (at least during the testing phase). I also noticed that you compared the performance between the Keihin and Lectron (a little bit) but you did not mention the pros and cons of the SC performance. Based on your comments it sounds like you may have felt the SC power characteristics were more linear than the Lectron. Can you please elaborate a bit more on your thoughts on how each one performed?
Cody, please don't take this the wrong way, but it would be good to have some kind of a script in mind prior to a review of this type. I know you are a racer first and RUclips guy second, but the chopping and changing delivery detracts from the details you are trying to deliver. Great to see you on the Sherco 👍
For one yamaha dt 125 with big bore kit in 168cc by Athena. what are you thinking about? Lectron or smart carburettor? Because i dont have the money to play with carburettors . Im thinking 34 mm lectron!. I have foul racing handmade exhaust ,v- force 4 reed and racind foul setting cdi . And now i have one oko 38mm carburettor with out filter . And running good but in the middle of rpm i have less power than originally carburettor 28 Mikuni. I appreciate if you help me. Thanks 😊
Sherco 300s come with a 36mm Keihin stock and the engine characteristics developed at the factory favor the 36mm size. For that reason we recommend the 36mm SmartCarb SC2 for best performance regardless of elevation factors. Unless you're boosting (turbo), there's no workaround fueling-wise for power losses at elevation. You can, however, opt for a higher compression head to offset some of those losses, but that tends to require a step richer metering rod in the SC2. Rarely do we recommend the 38mm for that application unless it's purpose has been radically changed (supermoto, snowbiking, etc).
On the lectron you could try the 5-1 rod at 2.025 inches (measured from tip of rod to the brass circle on slide, without compressing the rod spring). That seems to be best for me. For reference I'm on a 2017 300 xc KTM
Iam sure the Chinese have coped the electron carburetor its called smart high velocity XTNG the one i seen abit ago on the net its £319.87 + post £16.03
I've had two buddies on 300s do back to backs between Keihin and Lectron. They both independently said that the Keihin had better bottom end. I think the Keihin might be harder to adjust and has more variables, but when you get it dialed it is the best overall. Can you comment on how the bike ran with the Keihin? Also do the Shercos come with a 36 or 38?
I don’t remember what jetting I was running. But it varied depending on where I was. I believe we leaned out pilot. I had a 35-38 pilot and a 165-168 main I believe for primarily extreme. Which could be a little lean for more mx style riding. 2nd-3rd clip on needle
@@codywebb2 hmm...I feel that i do not have linear transfer from bottom to top (too agresive for me) on my 250ser, would bigger main jet help with that?
We haven't seen Cody respond to this video for awhile, but then he is a busy guy. Hopefully he won't mind us chiming in, but his SmartCarb use over the last few years has been exclusively with the 36mm size in his Sherco 300s. Unless you've turned your 300 SE into a supermoto/snowbike - and we have had a few do just that - our recommendation is the 36mm.
you don't push up on the needle to adjust the Lectron you rotate it with the tool then when you need to have the flat side facing the engine you push up and rotate it around and it doesn't set any further it just allows you to properly orient the needle
Being it a smart carb, shouldnt it adjust automatically? Like u use some kind of odb2 tool and set engine type and size and than the sensors should adjust realtime on enviroment settings and cold or hot engine?
It's not that it adjusts automatically, it just uses air density and velocity more efficiently using a metering rod and at-manifold density/pressure communication into the float bowl, driving fuel flow proportionally for a wider range of air densities due to elevation/temperature and even artificial factors like blow-thru boost. What you're touching on is certainly worth considering, and we are, but to suggest that a requirement for making this carb "smart" would be real-time adjustments would miss the fact that it doesn't really need to. We always recommend assessing performance with a hot engine/pipe and while riding. No easier carb to adjust trail-side than the SmartCarb. It's all external and takes seconds, without tools.
Cody have you tested a Kehin PWK-AS modified by DICKS Racing ? DICK Taper Bores the carb to work in slow technical and fast WFO settings. DICK adds an Intel-a-jet system with a similar Power Jet Needle as Lectron. The Intel-a-jet also has an Air Impact adjuster to fine tune the Power Jet mixture for altitudes changes. Dude, this Carb Pulls each gear to infinity & beyond !! It comes set up / jetted ready for installation..... The air impact - Lean - rich adjuster knob (rarely used) is mounted to left side of the steering head next to the gas tank
Im looking into lectron for my 250 chinese duel sport I live at 90 to 200 feet above sea level but a ride 3 hours north puts me at 2000feet on average to as high as 4000 feet I am looking for cost effiecent but my bike runs really crappy at higher elevations which is understandable because my bikes all tuned up for where I live not where I like to go
I have a Lectron on my YZ250 and cannot get it working properly. Some days it’s fine. Some days it’s trash. My friend has a Lectron on his DRZ400. Some days it starts and runs fine. Other days it doesnt. I had a YZ250 with a stock carb and never once had an issue. Kicked first or second try every time.
Lectron being the common denominator here. FWIW we have solid tuning baselines for both the YZ250 and the DR-Z400 if you or your friend are ever interested in trying modern metering rod carburetion. Reach out if interested.
These are old old things, billet FCR kind of carbs.. would be much cheaper to make nowadays.. if you’re racing might as well then everything is just that much more precise

Awesome vid by the way.Maybe a vid on your 4 stroke bike please. its a 300 right?
Once again..the more adjustments a carburetor has the better it will run IF A SKILLED TUNER is doing the work. People that say a lectron or smart carb are the best have no flipping idea how to make a bike run good compared to a Keihin or Mikuni
Not true. For one, Cody and his mechanic are certainly capable of properly tuning a Keihin or Mikuni. More adjustments doesn't equate to better results. The fact is conventional carburetor development stalled out decades ago. More modern metering rod style carburetors, especially with the SmartCarb, with no conventional jets overlapping and signing on and off through the range are better able to accommodate engine demand and make better use of air density to do it. The SmartCarb in particular is better than Keihin or Mikuni for a number of reasons including making more power, staying consistently in tune regardless of elevation or temperature changes - even minor ones that impact conventional jetting, external adjustability to tweak for different riding conditions or terrain, no fuel spillage, the ability to meet emissions standards, linearity of power delivery, and way better fuel economy. Until you personally give one a try, I'd say that you are the one with no flipping idea.
@@nathandyess5310 you really are ignorant and shows your lack experience with carburetors. There is nothing new about the jet less carburetors from smart carb or lectron. The design has been around for 40 years or more. What you have to grasp is carburetors the more tuning circuits you have the better you can make your carb and bike run. While a smart carb has 2 tuning circuits a Mikuni or Keihin has 5 or 6.
@@codywebb2 thanks for the reply😀 I have the A-Q11, also at 78 clicks. Bottom and mid is excellent but it doesn't seem to like high speed 1/8 to 1/4 throttle for prolonged duration? The smart carb needs to get a working version for the EFI KLRs. And lower their price. Like cut it in half. That'll probably be their best entry into the 4 stroke market. Also, it would be nice if they could make a parallel twin 4 stroke run off a single carb. It's stupid to have 2 carbs on a parallel twin. That would be a good selling point. I predict many problems into the future as all this electronic nonsense starts failing on 20 year old motorcycles. It works good when it works, but people are going to face big problems when it stops working good, and they're going to need carbs.
It’s cool to hear a racer that actually knows about his bike and setup. I have an older SmartCarb. As not a racer, it’s nice to know I can show up and my bike will run. No matter the temp or elevation.

100% recommend the Lectron. I run the stock cable with the Lectron as i don't like the cable Lectron supply. You do need to shorten the outer so it fits however on a 2017 KTM 250/300.
I fixed in the description. You are correct. Thats what happens when you wing a video. I confused it with the SmartCarb mentality
Lol, understandable. Thanks for the comparison!

We were adjusting it properly and spoke to Electron while doing it. That was a couple months ago so he probably forgot the details
Yeah we got it fixed. I described it backwards because I was winging it and used the same mentality as adjusting the SmartCarb
Cody Richelderfer yeah I just DM’d him on IG and that’s what he said. Just wanted to make sure it was a simple mixup for the video! But it DOES match what he explains with how the tuning was affected too. Idk! Just trying to eliminate any confusion and help make a fair comparison!

@@codyjoseph44 What Made you go with the smart carb over the lectron? Easier adjust-ability or more power.

Suzuki NECJ needle is the ticket for the Keihin carb
Yes it surely is. After installing NECJ needle in my Husky TE 250 2015 Keihin PWK 38 jetting has been easy. Very good throttle response from idle to full throttle. My other bikes Husky TC 250 2018 with Mikuni TMX 38 jetting was first very bad. Way too rich and ran like shit.
Absolutely correct!
Best solution is a Keihin carb with a JD jetting kit for your bike. Simple, reliable and easy to tune with great support. Also fits the bike properly, unlike the Smartcarb and Lectron
Robert Moore forget jd. Get the stic metering block. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
chris marshall I’ve followed several threads on KTMTalk about that.
Check them out if your looking for something to watch.
chris marshall I follow Mark's channel. But for me the sweet spot was my Keihin JD setup on my 2014 - 2017 bikes.
Did you notice any fuel economy gains or quicker starting? Could you talk about that?
I have the lectron on my KTM300XC and yes it vastly improved. Paid for itself in one season in fuel savings. I am going to try the smart carb when I can ride again. But the lectron has worked very well, starting and idle has improved, warms up better. Easy to adjust.
just to make it clear and Not to put anyone off , ive got a lectron on my ktm and its been great , it took about 30 mins of testing and making it abit richer to get it 100% . its been great on the hard enduro stuff very smoothe power , the smart carb is a more modern way of the lectron , if anyone is in the market for another carb dont let any of the problems you hear of put you off buying one , they should work right out of the box and be great , but if they arent its not a huge deal to work around any of the problems that cody has described , they will run in much more conditions than a keihin can and the gas milage is great , think if i was buying again i would buy a smart carb becasue they have fixed all the little kinks that the lectron has

do the tipover valves easily reset, they must work ok if they got smart carbs on powered paragliders? looks like maybe smartcarb2 is the best if you operate at a lot of different altitudes?
Hi Cody.
Thanx for your test.
I wish you could do a more detailed one just on the lectron.
I have a question to the part you made the mistake you mentioned on the Lectron . I am a little bit screwed at the moment.
What i recognized / where i would like to comment
1. The tool is not part of delivery.
a) It must be ordered and payed separately. (At least in Germany it is this way)
b) You need the tool unless you want to damage the needle with a plier.
2. Could you please explain in Detail what you are doing around 09:00 in your video.
im struggling at the moment to find the ideal setup for my GasGas250:
What i think:
a) Explaining how leaner and richer is setup in general is fine.
I do not know:
a) if my description is valid. The Manual is really poor and your video is one of the best explanations
b) you can ask someone to confirm this
c) can he explain on how to count the rotates mentioned in the turns in the manual. For a 250cc base setup is 3-5 4 rotations.
Q) Starting from completly closed (Lowering from full rich to lean) or starting from ultra lean Making it 4 Rotations fatter
d) can you explain the power jet in detail.
Greetings from Germany.
Hope to see you soon on the bike.
My problem:
GasGas has 2 Ignition curves.
Cody got it wrong. Turn rod in the down position to richen or lean. Push up only to get rod back to correct position after making a change.

Yeah, this is key about rod adjustment.
Would recommend if ur gonna submerge the carb in ultrasonic that u remove the TPS wouldn’t want any fluid intrusion into the sensor thru shaft bearing of old wire sheathing

I have plenty of power now
Thank you so much!
Do you ever use a Air Fuel Ratio gauge to tune a keihin? Just wondering because i was going to put an fcr39 on my bike and am going to have an 02 sensor bung installed on the header pipe for tuning.
I like the SU carberator myself.
As good as the results can be, $500 - $800 buys an awful lot of jets and needles, even labour for a tuner to sort out the original jetting.

Based on what you said, and the fact that the SC was actually ON your bike during the video, would it be safe to say that this is the one you have chosen to run for now? Sir can a lextron float bowl use at keihin carb
For a 300, would you choose a 38 or 36 bigger or. Smaller for your colorado riding. Let's say 10k feet.
Your riding is on point. I know you are always on the technical side of terrain, have you ever tried out the YZ250X?

On the lectron you could try the 5-1 rod at 2.025 inches (measured from tip of rod to the brass circle on slide, without compressing the rod spring). That seems to be best for me. For reference I'm on a 2017 300 xc KTM

Want to run a couple of those smart carbs on my DUCATI 500
Lectron being the common denominator here. FWIW we have solid tuning baselines for both the YZ250 and the DR-Z400 if you or your friend are ever interested in trying modern metering rod carburetion. Reach out if interested.
These are old old things, billet FCR kind of carbs.. would be much cheaper to make nowadays.. if you’re racing might as well then everything is just that much more precise
can you make a vid on your bike showing what you have done so far, not much out there on shercos and your opion is huge. who does your suspension and your ways you like it set up for hard enduro.I know you want to win so your way is best you can find. Awesome vid by the way.Maybe a vid on your 4 stroke bike please. its a 300 right?
I only have the two stroke
Get yourself some standard allens!
I thought lectron was self tuning and that was their selling point
It is
I love the sc2 on my 2020 300 factory👍👍 I would really like to know what settings you are running Cody🤔
Tim Jackson been using the Q07 metering rod at 78 clicks out currently. Do you know what you have in there?
@@codywebb2 thanks for the reply😀 I have the A-Q11, also at 78 clicks. Bottom and mid is excellent but it doesn't seem to like high speed 1/8 to 1/4 throttle for prolonged duration? I've had it just die out on me whilst riding a couple times now, any suggestions, maybe a click or two leaner? So pleased to see you on the Sherco this year, hopefully you will get to race once this zombie apocalypse is over, I'll be watching✊
you. ever said which one you like the best ?????
He's using the SC2 so I think that's the answer :)
Nir Hason even you made the point in your reply to me....
you said "i think" this is the one he likes
The smart carb needs to get a working version for the EFI KLRs. And lower their price. Like cut it in half. That'll probably be their best entry into the 4 stroke market. Also, it would be nice if they could make a parallel twin 4 stroke run off a single carb. It's stupid to have 2 carbs on a parallel twin. That would be a good selling point. I predict many problems into the future as all this electronic nonsense starts failing on 20 year old motorcycles. It works good when it works, but people are going to face big problems when it stops working good, and they're going to need carbs.
Cody let us know the one guy is that gave the thumbs down so we can go to his house and have a chat
Jay Hansen he is free to his own opinion haha
