    Seeing your grass overgrown makes me not feel as bad as when we just got back from a 3 week trip and we had a jungle in the back yard, gfs dad cut the front St. Augustine but skipped the backyard. I actually just bought a house in Tarpon Spings and found your channel looking for Florida yard maintenance for St. Augustine after moving from Mobile Alabama(grass just grows lol). Keep up the good work and awesome videos, love how you break it down for us.

    I love Zoysia also !! As a commercial mowing company. I have experienced a ton of what looks like fungus issues. (But I believe it is more like rotting turf) this year because of all the rain and the turf growing too high. The turf is so dense it does not allow light penetration and rots quickly. I found it seems to be better to bag clipping for the summer with Zoysia. This has been working nicely .

    Love this series man. I’m in the same situation with my bermuda. I didn’t let it get 8”, but cutting every 6-7 days wasn’t enough and it’s leggy.

    I live in southern Japan and have zoysia I guess. Here they call it... grass... the only turf you can get in squares. In any case I actually pretty well never water my lawn nor fertilize it with anything more than coffee grounds. It takes until June to fully green up so maybe I should be giving it more love in spring. After rainy season I just don't water it. I keep it as short as I can since I'm gone for a month in the peak of summer and expect to come back to maybe 4" or 5" since it gets mowed some. We get enough rain that it stays green with no weak areas. (I'd go ballistic if my lawn got as long as yours while I was away. I use a reel mower and would have to go first with a weed whacker to get it down to something I could actually mow).
    I'd try harder but Japan is just not a land where homeowners have big lawns. No joke the next nearest home with a proper lawn that I've found is 3km away and it's half the size of my lawn. Here it's more go to a home centre to find products that kill the weeds in the dirt around your home than lawn care. I'll keep an eye on your channel to see how Florida lawns winter.

      @wendyon4517 5 лет назад

      @@tomsherman2350 Do you have a title for that video? I'm not seeing anything that suggests reel mower modification.
      As the sole house with a lawn in my area I have no Jones' (or Tanaka's) to keep up with. My lawn is short and green and used pretty well every day for play. Lawn Care products at the garden center are pretty well non-existent. I'll never have anything near your grass. I'm a see a weed pull a weed person, though. I have to be because I've open field 5 meters across the road with weeds taller than any living human :)

    I would like to see more updates on this. I sodded some sections with zoysia a couple years back and was forced to cut high because the some of the sod sat high in areas was got scalped badly during the first mow....so after I say that first patch get scalped I kicked the the mower up to the highest setting then and it has looked great. Last year during the spring I stepped it down a notch on the mower and it just has not seemed to recover and be as full as it once was. I have been applying next detach to try and keep the thatch down but it just does not seem as happy as at the higher setting. I fear that if I cut it down another notch at the moment that I will take all the green off and it will die.

    Allyn, you should make a video for us West Coasters who have mostly Alkaline (high PH) soil. How to lower PH (which is much harder than raising it in acidic soils of the East coast), luckily high PH pinches off just a bit on nutrients, unlike low PH can completely starve the plants of nutrients.

    Allyn, you can and should just take it down all at once, on the same day, to the lowest setting on the Toro, and then mow at the second to lowest setting every time after that. You can scalp zoysia to the dirt and it will come back. This is Greendoc's advice for getting overgrown Empire under control: "Working Zoysia down slowly prolongs the time it will be unattractive. Scalp it as low as you can go."

    Hi Allyn, I too I’m growing Zoysia here in sunny Jacksonville,FL. I have several question about how you care for it. This year I hired a lawn service to handle the fertilizing of the lawn and its looking better. But getting advice from these folks is tough. For one they only understand St Augustine grass. I would love to know if you have maybe put out a Zoysia guide. You seem to have a good handle on the grass (Zoysia Whisperer) My main question right now is the ideal height. I have heard 2” and the lawn care folks are saying 3. 5. What do you suggest? Thanks and I’m really enjoying you videos.

  • @rey3472
    @rey3472 5 лет назад

    It is not a takedown unless i see dirt. Maintenance height on Zoysia is between 0.5-0.6 for the Zaponica selections. Maintaining it at a higher HOC is miserable because of the thatch and then diseases.

    Not sure mixing Greene Effect with Greene Punch is best choice. I would think the citric acid would react with potassium hydroxide in the Greene Punch (KOH used to keep the humic acid soluble, right?) causing the humic to precipitate out and settle on the top layer of soil. Also the citric would get consumed mostly by that process and not make it to the soil to lower the pH temporarily. Absent of this reaction the citric acid would lower the pH slightly and then the plant would take up a bunch of iron to catalyze chlorophyll production making the plant double dark green. If you needed more nitrogen for a burst, might have been better to add some ammonium sulfate or plain urea to the 7-0-0 Greene Effect. I just think combining Punch and Effect may have cancelled out some their respective efficacy.

    Hey Allyn two thoughts if you wait 2 days in between cutting won't the grass grow a bit so if you're lowering the deck in them 2 days aren't you essentially taking off more then in a previous cut also bought the 7-0-0 and the 0-0-2 for drought relief and Halloween domination in the bio stim pack it says to use 8oz/1000 square foot but you recommend 6oz what's your thoughts thanks for your time

      Yes it does but being too tall leads to thatch in Zoysia Soni had to get it under control.
