Could you use the old poly tunnel cover as ground sheet for pathways saw you have used tarps in the old plot so though it would be an idea or use some of the old pallets and make a big cold frame to cover over one of your beds so you can still grow in the winter

There are wood pallets on your plot that you could take apart and use for raised beds. And as others have said, cardboard over the cleared ground... using cardboard as biodegradable sheet mulch would be so much better than that nasty plastic. So glad you are lifting that plastic up ❤❤❤

You might struggle getting decent wood for raised beds like that. You could try and source some old pallets and buy a break down tool. I did this and made a couple of 1.2m squared raised beds, a netted box cover and even a Hedgehog house. All with old pallet wood. Was pretty hard work though.
In the end I decided it was better just to buy the wood. So I ordered a load of 2.4m decking and some 2 by 2 wood for corner bits and have started making raised beds from that. I just cut one of the 2.4m bits in half so 3 pieces of decking for a 2.4m by 1.2m raised bed. I got the decking from Wickes who almost always seem to have a deal on. I paid 6 quid a board so it works out around 20 quid per raised bed when accounting for the corner bits and screws too.
If you start a patron, or enable super thanks on RUclips (or you could even consider doing a crowd fundraiser) I think you could quickly raise enough to get a few raised beds pretty quickly.

We can see the progress, Emma. We'll done! Just a tip: why don't you use some of the ground sheet from the new plot on that patch of grass on the edge of your original plot (you know, by the fence). Cover that grassy area with the sheets and wood chips (if you have some), so you don't have to keep cutting it back. 🥰

And I covered mine last year and then was attacked in the garden this march and thus I now grow indoors bar some spuds. It's not safe. But I spent a lot of money doing my garden up last summer and currently it looks like a jungle and like there's no ground sheets down. I will have this battle next year but I've got Cotswold stones over a big part of it. I could cry. It's one of the reasons I love your vids, living vicariously until I'm confident enough to be in my garden again. Lots growing indoors though thankfully!

10 metres by 12.5 metres would be 125 square metres
10 metres by 14 meters would be a little over at 140 square metres but looking at your plot I think either they have made a mistake on the size of your new plot or part of your new plot actually belongs to your old plot .measure both add the totals together of both plots and see if they come to the total you have been billed for

Some people cover the whole area with weed membrane the put raised beds on top then cut through the weed membrane where the raised beds are. But given you had membrane lined raised beds on top on the ground membrane that's probably not what they planned. Unless they were planning on cutting through but wanted to wait a year to kill the weeds but also wanted to grow something for the first year. Of course there could have been multiple plot holder and the last one just didn't know what they were doing.

Great to watch your progress. Weather will change quickly soon, hope you get the new beds built before winter ready for spring before maybe even tackling the back of the new plot. If it gets too out of hand quickly you could always tackle the back part in the new year, it would be easier to keep on top of half the new plot than100% of it all together! Enjoy your videos

  • @susiea1419
    @susiea1419 11 месяцев назад

You are working so hard to return that plot to something good. Get rid of that plastic Emma as UV light breaks it down to micro plastics as time goes on. Put cardboard down and look at using wood chipping especially in the bottom of your raised beds and on top as well. Back to Eden is fascinating - on RUclips. We are using it this year as it not only surprises weeds but turns to soil. If using in the bottom of beds poke holes in or the water will pool.
Another thing burn your weeds and grasses as they will just knacker your compost heap and regrow 😱😱

Whatever the reason they have done all in groundsheet they never thought about someone taking it over after several years of abundance, did they? 😅 There is no point of figuring out the reason - there are a lot of different gardening methods... They had their own reason that obviously is far from any of your gardening reasoning... You just have your own space and time to rebuild the whole plot up to your likes. But well done, that is a massive job and you are so determined. You're making good progress 👍🏻

I have the same thing at the front of my plot. The ground sheet is a good 20cm deep in some places. I think that they piled woodchip on top year after year so it decomposted down and gave the grass and weeds something to grow on. Only a bramble or two have actually gone through the ground sheet. So in the later years (the plot was owned by previous people for 7 years) they just let it grow/forgot

Speaking of the size of the plot. If no one has pointed out the boundary of yours, then I'd assume just use your common sense and have a guess - where it looks like a boundary there it is going to be now, no matter where did they measure it when making up paperwork. Even if it is slightly off the original line - sometimes it is a bit approximate. I don't think that my actual plot is the same as measuring on the paper - as long as you keep it done, it is yours till that point/line.

Do you have ticks and Lyme disease in your area? We have it here and your long grass and weeds make me nervous. My dog had a tick the other day from my garden. Ugh!

All those weeds on the groundsheet - that's really crazy. The weeds remind me at the time when I got my plot.

I want to say to that person over on Instagram (my NY accent coming through) “Excuse me but I’m gardening over here” lol. You are doing such an amazing job. I love watching you & listening to you talking yourself through stuff. Love your spirit keep doing YOU and tell the haters to “kiss your 💎 jewels” 💋

Amazing work Emma - can see light at the end of the tunnel! Maybe the previous owners gave up on the plot when they saw weeds growing through the plastic?

are you aloud fires on your plot? If so burn all the weeds, swigs and unusable wood then when it’s all cold you can spread the ash over your soil :).

Just want to say thank you for making those videos. I just got my allotment not long ago ago and have been preparing bed on it atm. Watching your video is like being on the same journey as you and it is encouraging 😊

Emma, I love your videos, the honesty is so refreshing, but please don't use language like 'they haven't bothered'.
I know two people who have had allotments but; one died and the other son was ASD and therefore couldn't have free time as an unpaid carer xxx

Thanks, Emma, I love seeing your progress with the new plot!
How about an end of season tour of your home garden? That could be filmed on a day that you're just not up for a visit to the allotment(s).

Why don't you buy your fruits and vegetables in a shop and enjoy your life in your own garden? So much efforts for cleaning another one his property? Take care!

What an insensitive comment! Emma is working so hard and is doing an amazing job. She is inspiring us all and has made loads of progress! If it’s not interesting to you, why watch? Very odd comment 🤷🏼‍♀️

Apologies if my comment caused you upset. However, a month has passed and progress has reached a standstill. I suspect it’s all about standards. Much that I find some of Emma’s video fun, this is tempered by the slow speed with which she is tackling this project. Having the luxury of spending most of the week, potentially 6-8 hours a day on the allotment, the rejuvenation of the plot today doesn’t reflect that. Maybe I should have put myself forward ?

@@markrollings1762ah sorry! I wasn’t aware that you know Emma personally and know what her weekly schedule and other commitments look like 👍🏻 either way, I always think it’s really kind to comment on people’s posts with a view to bring them down. Only the nicest people do that 👍🏻 congratulations 😊 Glad to hear you are such a hard worker and clearly a lovely supportive person as well 👏🏻

I don’t plan on taking my membrane up either. I’ve used 350 sq m of it. Covered most of the plot and then cut out the membrane where I settled on placing the beds. No different really to how your original plot is… membrane under paths but not the beds.
Wonder if that was their plan before they abandoned it.
My plot is 446 sq m in total. 4800 sq ft. 🥹
