  • I was curious what the Christmas night markets is like in Europe, so we decided to do a little weekend getaway to nearby Belgium and check it out! The Christmas night market was open in Bruges, while the one in Ghent wasn't yet, so we stayed a night in Bruges. Apparently local people don't pronounce the "g" so Bruges/Brugge is actually pronounced "bru-huh". Interesting right?
We started in Bruges and did some sight seeing during the day, checked out Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk), Viewpoint De Dijver, Rosary Quay (Rozenhoedkaai), Saint John’s Hospital (Museum Sint-Janshospitaal), Basilica of the Holy Blood (Basiliek van het Heilig Bloed), De Burg, Belfry of Bruges, and the famous Lovers' Bridge (Minnewaterbrug) at the Lake of Love (Minnewater). Night time we went to check out the Christmas night market, and there are two! The main one was at the Grote Markt right in front of the Belfry of Bruges, but it was really busy and crowded. The second one is located at Simon Stevinplein which was only 5 minutes away. Although it was smaller, but it was less crowded and much more cozy! The next day we went to Ghent and walked around, saw the Friday Market (Vrijdagmarkt) missing-in-action 🤣, Gravensteen, Grasbrug, Korenlei, Graslei, Saint Michael's Bridge (Sint-Michielsbrug), Korenmarkt, Saint Nicholas' Church (Sint-Niklaaskerk), Ghent City Hall (Stadhuis Gent) and Saint Bavo's Cathedral (St.-Baafskathedraal). We also tried a bunch of local food, such as vol-au-vent, moules-frites, stoofvlees, and of course the belgian waffle!
