Backyard Renovation Part 5: Final Preparations

- Sod day is almost here! But before laying the new grass, there are several key steps that needed to be completed. In this video, I walk you through those steps, which include adding stone planters around the fruit trees, planting an avocado tree, finalizing grading and rolling the dirt, and adding edging for the grass boundary. Looking good. One bit of advice, though? You may have wanted to tease out the roots on the tree before filling in the whole. Hopefully, it won't be too bad.

Looking great , with that tree you planted should of taken a small hand garden rake and broke open the bottom that would of helped your tree grow properly.

The dirt “bowl” to water the avocado tree is the best!! Deep watering every week or two is MUCH better for the tree than frequent shallow watering ... minus the doggy, of course ;)

I have loved watching you guys fix up your new house, and it is looking great! As a person with degrees in landscape architecture and horticulture though, I have a couple concerns and suggestions. With the evergreens by the sprinkler valves, did the trencher go through roots? I don't quite know what those trees are or what their root system is like (midwesterner here) but it seemed pretty close to the trees. I would keep an eye on them just in case. With the mulch around the fruit trees, I would just make sure to pull it back from the trunk a couple inches. Mulch will hold moisture up against the trunk inviting pests and disease into the tree which wouldn't be good, haha. Also having a perfectionistic personality I love a ll the hard work you are putting in to get the final grade as smooth as possible. Whenever you use a roller you should also be sure to aerate the lawn after it has established itself, so maybe next year to keep it healthy and looking good after all the work you've put in!

I was also concerned about rubber mulch being use near trees too. While rubber mulch is easy to install and last for years, (my dad has it at his house for the playgroud for the grand kids and it's great... just gets hot during the summer) it could inspiring

As the rubber breaks down over time, the rubber adds toxins into the soil which the tree and it's fruit may absorb. Be safe. Overall, great job on the home improvements. theres nothing about rubber mulch that sounds like a good idea esp under a tree that you plan on eating the fruit from.
playgrounds are where I see rubber mulch, not around things to be eaten

You should clear about a foot up each tree of the limbs
At the end he wanted to lay down in the cool mud but couldn't get enough water out. You should think about installing a small wade pond that is automatically fed when it gets to 6" deep it stops. I guarantee you have the knowledge and grit to complete that task.
Nice video. FYI If my research is accurate, avocado trees are recommended to be planted in pairs for flowering and pollination.
Yeah, you have a higher chance of a good crop with two. But it depends on the area. Some places are more ideal than others for self pollination. I'm not sure about California...
Yes that is true because there are A and B avo trees. Luckily, in my situation, there are a bunch of trees nearby. So I can assume it will be able to cross pollinate with a neighboring tree instead of having to get a second one
