Amazing work. Im surprised at the stone masons not wearing any form of respirators, here in Australia the PPE requirements have just been increased and some forms of work methods and types of stone completely banned, crystalline Silica is quite lethal and leads to silicosis and death its now treated like working with Asbestos as far as work cover is concerned.
As a fellow Australian, I wish to thank you both for the massive contribution to the restoration of this beautiful French chateau. It is a pleasure to see how your choice of French artisans is recovering the chateau in such loving detail. Thank you so much.

That corner now looks so cozy and iconic. I can imagine all the stories l, all the conversations that must have transpired at the front door of the Marquis. This is surely what restoration is all about. Like no other corner of any other home. You can just feel the history even on the other side of the camera lens and the subsequent computer screen.
Oh wow! the detail the craftsman undertakes is astonishing, watching this video I couldn't help but think the original artisans would be envious of today's tools. And that door that is so cool!

Through small details of use, the story of the private door tells all about social classes in France at the end of the XVIII° century (and probably still today). When some chosen people were allowed to enter inside the château by the great door, some others were facing a closed one, outside, waiting for someone "from the château" to let them in… We can so easily imagine this scene from the past.
It's such a fascinating detail - how architecture and design mimics social realities (of course!).
Sometimes, when I think about the enormity of what you two have taken on, I am in awe of your passion and courage! And that door is indeed a treasure. It's so great that you get such a kick out of the little gems that run throughout the larger one that is Purnon.

Every time I watch, I am brought to tears.
I lived in France during the early 60s. We didn't have the technology then that we have today. And it is plain to see the pride these craftsmen have in what they do. Thank you for your dedication.

How did the people build this castle hundreds of years ago without electricity, power tools, trucks and more, that's what I am wondering watching this restoration on the 21st century...

The usual approach to cleaning up the facade would, I'm sure, normally be to fake it with concrete and Hardiplank. And that's if they didn't just simplify the facade entirely. Very fine.
Truly, I've been struggling for context to really grasp what you're doing. Watching again today, it occurs to me! La Sagrada Familia basilica, in Barcelona, is the only other place I've seen similar attention to detail and tradition being carried out by living people. ...Yeah... Wow!
Once again I'm impressed by the skill of the artisans working on the chateau, watching the gentleman essentially freehand the shaping of the window surround with the grinder was gobsmacking. Each video also leads me down some interesting internet searches, I'm now off to look at historical door hinges. Thank you again and best wishes to your team.

Just want to say that I am becoming more and more in awe of the skills of Original team of artisans / from the architect to the stonemasons, carpenters, decorators and others/ who have designed and built this Gem of Architecture in the 18th Century, 250 years ago! Every detail of the construction had its own purpose and thought of! The new discovery of the probable purpose of the door from the office was great to know, with more understanding about the classes interactions! Thanks for your message. There is a temporary pipe attached to it that passes in front of the door. We disabled it to film the video.

Would you kindly show the tuffeau stone grafting process which you mention when explaining red marks versus blue marks? This, to me, is one of the most amazing parts of the chateau restoration, due to the fact that the craftsmanship and tools used for the stone shaping are seldom seen in the USA. I found it incredible that the quarter round shape on the bottom of the stone window sill would be hand carved in the field rather than precut into each stone in the shop. What an amazing vlog!!

Will the redesigned restored gutters stop deterioration of the exterior stonework in the future or is it inevitable? ❤️🙏
The new gutters sit out from the building rather than on top of the stone facades. Their fixtures attach to the roof rather than penetrating the stone (as the old ones did). The new ones are made of copper rather than zinc. All of these factors will ensure that the new gutters protect the stone facade instead of compromising it. Thanks for your message!

Great craftspersons. I'm glad such skilled persons continue to practice stonemasonry.
I am curious if they will remain when the house stone is done and move to the other stone such as the bridge to the door. I'm interested in the type of stone there and what care it needs to be cleaned and perhaps replaced such as the figures at the end which would appear to require carved replacements.
Thank you for your message. To answer your questions: yes, they will do the bridge as the chateau restoration concludes. The stone is predominantly tuffeau stone (a limestone from the Loire Valley). The stone is cleaned as well as restored. The statues at the end of the bridge (two lions) are not part of the current phase of works. They have been cleaned and protected but their restoration will be part of a future phase.

I have a question what are you guys doing with the old stones you were replacing.
Are you going to be building a family mausoleum with them? If not, I cannot recall ever seeing a video of someone building a newer family mausoleum at their estate or Château.
Or are you repurposing them other places on the château?
They cannot be re-purposed. the soft tuffeau stone wears very poorly. Obviously, the stones being removed are already in pretty poor condition. They shatter very easily and sometimes they even break up in our hands (as the stone is very porous). The best we can do is use some of it to level certain sections of our property where building waste fill is required. To answer your other question about a family mausoleum, the families of former owners of the chateau have been buried in family plots in the village cemetery. There is no mausoleum on the chateau grounds and we aren't planning to build one.

Are there plans in sealing the stones?
Lots of restoration work, lots of labor, lots of natural resources, ... lots of money and time spent. Well, at least, this is a great economic pickup to the local labor force of tradesman and craft workers... and other long distance demand and supply of natural resources and their transportation to the Chateau.

The gutter downspout by the door… could that be the cause of all the stone damage?
No, that copper down pipe is new. There is a temporary pipe there that we took out to film the video... otherwise the door would have a massive plastic pipe in front to it.

A friend of our recently visited Europe with her mother but cannot fly due to a medical condition. They drove from West Coast to NY then took cruise over to drive around in central Europe for a couple of weeks then came back same way. Definitely more expensive in terms of money and time but it was her dream to go and she loved it.

I was a commercial door installer for 15 years and found this vlog so interesting to learn about the counterweights on a man door.
I've worked on a lot of counterweight commercial overhead doors before but never a Man/Pass door, That's Super Cool, Thanks!
A building or structure is beautiful and serves a purpose. Purnon is such a treasure, but not just for the building we see. It is the time and effort spent on design, construction and decorating from the 1700s to today. It isn’t so much to me about the actual building but each individual artist or caretaker who has cared enough to do their very best for it. That is what makes it special. It forces people to take a deep breath and participate in history.
Love watching your channel. Ever consider talking to the camera instead of each other when explaining details at the end? More like talking to the viewers rather than telling each other things you each probably know. Just a thought. Amazing what you’re doing there. Such a huge undertaking, I’m so impressed.
The key of the entire project will be the roof restoration of the “communs” buildings. Without those the whole property would not be the same … but it’s another gigantic project…

I was just thinking that if the marquis opened the interior door maybe with the original mechanism it would automatically open the outside door to allow air flow into the room that would be and is a stunning revelation that they built it to close automatically.

As we mention in the video, it is a linseed oil paint. It lasts a very long time, rarely requires the same prepping and is environmentally-friendly.

Question: Can u explain why the copper downspout ends midway down by the corner of the Marquis’ office door? Wouldn’t rainwater running like a hose, begin to cause damage to the door and stone again? Why does the downspout not go to the ground and away from the chateau?
It will. That part of the restoration is ongoing. At the moment, a temporary pipe runs in front of the door and away from the chateau. We disconnected it in order to make the video because it interrupted the view of the door.

The bust above that door. Who is that?
Well spotted - a great question. We don't know. The chateau archives don't tell us. There are two busts facing each other on the northern facade inside these circular niches. One is a figure from the 16th century (based on his apparel) and the other is a neo-classical figure. Their identities remain a mystery to us.
Perhaps an the orginal owner or family members of prominence?

Thank you! It's really both - the chateau is not going to start collapsing on account of a badly degraded stone block on the facade. So both aesthetic and integrity issues are considered.

Watching the stone mason shape the stone under the window sill was amazing. My question is, why use such soft stone to build with? Won't it just get worn away and build up all the dirt over time again?
If rain water from the roof is well-managed, the stone will last a fairly long time. So, well constructed guttering and roofing (which we are installing) will prolong the life of the stone. Why this stone? Well, this tuffeau limestone is the local stone of the Loire Valley. One of the biggest challenges in any construction project is transporting the heavy raw materials over long distances (particularly in the 18th Century when the chateau was built). Therefore, it was normal to use the materials that were readily at hand - stone, oak, even the sand for the render - local products were typically used.
The patience, artistry, and love each stone mason has put into every stone to insure it measures exactly as it should, is beyond reproach. My hat is off to each of them! I know they receive a paycheck for their work, but you can see how each one of them is determined to insure the final outcome will be almost or exactly as it was done all of those years ago when the Château was built. To everyone involved in this project, thank you for restoring this magnificent structure. I live in the U.S.A, but being able to watch this restoration gives me an idea of how it was put together oh so many years ago!
