Even though I have been in the background silently cheering you on, marveled at what you both have physically accomplished yourselves, as well as, your restoration teams…this is by far my favorite episode! Eliane’s personal presence, recounting her family’s lives at Purnon, and her expressions as she went room-to-room have touched my heart. I remember her telling us that she lived on a farm for a time and that times were simpler- described perfectly by Elaina. It occurs to me that her narration and descriptions offer you an amazing and unique opportunity to document and restore the look and purpose of so many spaces at Purnon, especially her flat. The actual wallpaper and some furniture and artifacts still exists - astounding! With that video documentation of her journey through time, she has gifted you provenance which is invaluable in the realm of art, history and it’s associated value - monetary and historical.
I paid rapt attention to every tiny detail including her emotions as she recalled memories of each space or article encountered on your walkthrough. The existence of that family in residence at Purnon , ney Purnon itself, is 100% underpinned by the support of the staff that provided food, maintenance and the soul of a community to propel the estate forward through time to be laid at our hands today.
Tremendous thanks to you both for the effort, sacrifice and time devoted to rescuing this moment in time which makes the present a much richer time and place due to our ability to compare and reflect on how the present is made possible and supported by our past.

My story are that I love on a typical south Swedish farm from the 1850 and 100 years later a woman moved in with her husband. When we bought it in 2007 we met her and got to know and love her for 10 years before she passed at 98 years of age, she as your lady talked with love about their home and life eventhough it was hard work.

Wow. What an emotional video this week. I cried like a baby several times. How wonderful Eliane's story will live on here on the internet forever. Tim and Felicity you are good people who were born for this project. I can't help but think there is a great lesson to when she said you can't dream of what you don't know, so you are happy with what you have. In this internet world when we are all obsessed with what other folks have we can sometimes forget to be happy with what we do have. I couldn't help but notice that the lions on the stairs look pretty much exactly the same as 60 plus years ago! One day when she returns for a visit, you'll have to take a photo of her in the exact same spot as the photo with her as a young girl at the base of the stairs.

    •  2 месяца назад +1

What a wonderful message! Thank you... there was much wisdom in her happy memories of what must have been sometimes difficult times. Something for all of us. And, yes, the lions! We were secretly pleased to see they are not deteriorating that rapidly!!

The memories and photos of the people who lived at Purnon meld together with the physical restoration to bring it back to life. It's wonderful that you are infusing the chateau with the stories and the history as you go. She will surely stand proudly when the restoration is "complete" (I use quotation marks because I know you said it will probably not be completed in our lifetimes, but I think you will reach a tipping point, kind of like inflating a hot air balloon, when it begins to lift off... She will swell with pride to be in her glory again and Eiane's story will be part of that.)

Before learning of Eliane's profession, I was certain that her storytelling skills had been perfected in a pedagogical setting.

It was a real honor to listen to someone who experienced life at the Chateau while it was still a living enterprise. And must be very glad to see the place of her many childhood memories being brought back to life.

I have come to have such respect for your work in restoring this grand piece of French history. That would be enough, but you honor the fact that Purnon is really all about the people, starting with the most humble and essential souls who gave it life. Thank you for sharing with the rest of the world. (This from Texas).

I feel as if her memories are mine. Post war, similar age, lived in a Subdivision called Wesconett. Our Chateau was the large Naval base where most of our fathers worked. I recall our first washing machine and my father feeding wood to our heater in the small hallway. We were a family of 7. Times were hard but mostly I recall what we did have. Admitting that I wept while Watching this episode. Lovely history, many memories. Thank you.

It is so nice that this lady who lived there could share her story. It’s nice that you involve the local community, where there are bound to be a number of descendants of folks who worked or had some other connection to the chateau and its history.
When my family lived in the Netherlands during my childhood, we’d always drive down to France at least once a year to visit chateaux and their beautiful gardens. Those were happy family memories, although I also remember getting tired and complaining when tired, “oh no, not ANOTHER château!” Hahaha!

Have you thought about doing a historical journal? Stories (loves and lives) from the Chateau? I find the content captivating, not sure how it would look in print. All the material things (furniture) showed the evolution of time and technology (self closing door, beautiful pool table, etc.) The things we take for granted, I.e. hot water, washing machine - so grateful to have them.
