Today I Found Out why is the letter w called 'double you' while all the other letter in the alphabet uses their description as its name?, being a single letter.
This video is spot on. Three houses up from my home in Pittsburgh, PA lived Edward Ferris, George's son. I knew him as an old man in the 1960s. I was one of the five-year olds he was constantly chasing off his beautifully kept front lawn. A few years later we realized Mr. Ferris wasn't really such a bad fellow, but he would bore us with constant boasts that his dad invented the Ferris Wheel. I was unimpressed as I only knew of the more modest amusement park versions, nothing like the enormous original one mentioned in this video. I did not understand that his father was a great man. However, later in life I read of George Ferris' achievement of out eifelling the Eiffel Tower and what a sensation the wheel at the Chicago World's fair had been. Simon W. does not mention that the wheel was built with Pittsburgh steel, nor the connection an old curmudgeon in that city would have with George Ferris, but I upvoted this video just the same.
I am proud to say that I and the rest of you guys who watched this video already are part of the small portion of the first subscribers to Today I found Out. I predict you guys will have over a million subscribers before the end of the year.
Yeah! I subbed when there were just 40k subscribers, A million by the end of the year would be difficult, but I predict a Million subs by next April! Mostly cuz they don't use click bait titles and thumbnails.
Excellent video. I didn't know anything about Ferris. One minor correction: the town in New Jersey you mentioned is _Asbury_ Park, not Ashbury Park (_i.e.,_ no 'h').
Hi Simon, I love your videos. I aspire to be a polymath, and your videos have certainly contributed to that goal. You are very articulate and, even though your videos are brief, the information they contain are extensive. Thumbs up and keep up the good work!
Has anyone else watching this video seen/ touched the Ferris wheel in Pripyat (Chernobyl) in person? Crazy sight to see. Still can't believe I got to go there this past may.
Quite interesting. This video explained both the english name of these rides, and the name we use here in Denmark: Pariserhjul (Paris wheel). Thanks for being such an interesting channel.
I already knew the history of the Ferris Wheel, I just watched to see if you were going to mention Pittsburgh. Love the channel by the way. Just subscribed earlier today.
Some additional Ferris Wheel info: One of the people to ride Ferris' wheel at the Chicago exposition was W.E. Sullivan, the owner of a bridge building company in my home town of Jacksonville, IL. He got the idea to mass produce smaller wheels that could be disassembled and moved from event to event. He set up a factory next to the railroad tracks in Roodhouse, IL so that disassembled wheels could be shipped all over the US. Most of the Ferris Wheels at US carnivals and fairs are made by Eli Bridge Company, still to this day. Eli Bridge also invented and produces another popular ride, The Scrambler.
Nice work! Just to correct the Greek part: the stress is in the first syllable and not the second -- so it is 'soni and not so'ni (we still use this word for "enough").
Growing up in Costa Rica my maternal grandmother called them 'Rueda de Chicago' or 'wheel of Chicago'. It wasn't til I moved to the United States that I learned they had a diffrent name.
It's been a crazy week. The RUclips algorithm gods have finally decided the channel might be OK. ;-) Only took about 500 videos and over a year and a half :-)
Production's all set. We now just have to put up some sort of store front. First have to catch up on some things from working double time the last few weeks on the special election videos. ;-)
Interesting that being an Illinois native, Ferris' most famous achievement was built in Chicago. At the time of construction he was lving in Pittsburgh,Pa, Then, the epicenter of bridge construction in the US. Ferris and Roebling being legends in Western Pennsylvania.
Holy f***, i subscribed yesterday when you guys had around 89.000 subs, and today you 101.201 subs! Congrats, you really deserve the subs! Really like the videos i have seen so far, keep on the good work ;)
Thanks! A week ago we only had about 50K subscribers after 500 videos in about a year and a half. :-) Apparently all those ritual sacrifices we did to the RUclips gods last week did the trick. ;-)
Chicago was home to the first ever Giant Ferris Wheel, or as Ferris also called it, an Observation wheel. The US now has thousands of Ferris Wheels that span the country of all sorts of different sizes. The two biggest are the Orlando Eye at 400 ft tall making it almost as big as the London Eye. And the US also has the current world's tallest Ferris Wheel/Observation Wheel in Las Vegas called the High Roller. Its 550 ft tall making it 107 ft taller than the London Eye and nearly toe to toe with the Washington Monument.
Prior to a few years ago, I had assumed that it was called a Ferris wheel because it was made of iron/steel... but then i guess it would have been spelled "Ferrous Wheel".
Can you guys try to make longer videos, on more complex topics, like Vsauce for instance. Either way, i love your videos guys, keep up the good work! 😘
We try to mix it up. With our daily videos though it does limit us somewhat there, even with the number of people we have working on these things. But with the recent traffic and subscriber spike, it should provide some more funds for stuff like that at some point. :-)
Since this channel got over 100,000 subscribers, you guys are getting a silver playbutton; what about a video related to bronze, silver, and gold medals?
Ferris is a tall rotating non structural building, and also the first man to invent one is George Washington Gale Ferris Jr (in honor its named after him)and wheel is because it looks and spins like a wheel
How about this: Lyman Ward and Cindy Pickett, better known as Mr. and Mrs. Bueller on Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, first met on the set of that film and subsequently got married in 1986. Like in the movie, they had two children, a boy and a girl; unfortunately, they did not name them Ferris and Jeanie, but rather Shane and Miranda.
hey Simon I'm a huge fan and I was jw how feasible is it for you guys to take back the independence of the United States for the next four to eight years?
"1 Million in 3 months." **cowers in corner**... ;-) But seriously that would be awesome. A lot of improvements Simon and I could afford to make to these videos with that kind of active user base. :-)
Is this really the question? He's the sole presenter of Toptenz and one of two on TIFO. So you're better off anyway. I think TiFO's strength is its content. Toptenz is Simon.

James Bone yeah
James Bone I second that

You're very welcome
In Austria, we call it "Riesenrad" (giant wheel)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiener_Riesenrad

I've never enjoyed Farris wheel rides, but respect it's architecture.
In Sweden, we call them "pariserhjul" (sing. and pl.), which in English would be translated as "Parisian's Wheel".
Growing up in Costa Rica my maternal grandmother called them 'Rueda de Chicago' or 'wheel of Chicago'. It wasn't til I moved to the United States that I learned they had a diffrent name.
In Swedish we call it "pariserhjul" which means Paris wheel.
Same in Norway.
and Denmark
Finland bucks the trend with "maailmanpyörä" ("world-wheel")
tylisirn you arent a part of the pariswheel club
in Iceland it's called parísarhjól. Paris wheel
That moment when you watch a video at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute that mentions a guy whom attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
This video made me look up who Ferris State University was named after.
Matthew Raneri Crockett 3ed floor!
Guys,
Your subscribers doubled in a week!!!
amazing, lets open a science channel
It's been a crazy week. The RUclips algorithm gods have finally decided the channel might be OK. ;-) Only took about 500 videos and over a year and a half :-)
Today I Found Out That's quite a lot of effort.
hi. I'm a new subscriber. thank you for your videos. please make a video explaining why sunlight (or UV) bleaches coloured fabrics and paper.
love this content!! SUBSCRIBED!!
Another great video. Now, any news on the hoodie?
Production's all set. We now just have to put up some sort of store front. First have to catch up on some things from working double time the last few weeks on the special election videos. ;-)
Sweet!
We are really creative in Brazil. Here it is called Roda Gigante (Gigantic Wheel).
Interesting that being an Illinois native, Ferris' most famous achievement was built in Chicago. At the time of construction he was lving in Pittsburgh,Pa, Then, the epicenter of bridge construction in the US. Ferris and Roebling being legends in Western Pennsylvania.

Interesting video and very well made. I miss the Bonus fact though.
You guys are blowing up Holy cow, I subbed at like 50 thousand and that was only like last week or something jesus

120.000th SUB!

somewhat disappointed that the Riesenrad from Vienna wasn't in there...
zumindest hab ich's oben verlinkt ;-)
Es ist ja eines der berühmtesten überhaupt.
Ooh my goodness! One of my ancestors invented the Ferris wheel! His last name was Ferris... Hence the name. I'm so proud!
Prior to a few years ago, I had assumed that it was called a Ferris wheel because it was made of iron/steel... but then i guess it would have been spelled "Ferrous Wheel".

i really like the daily videos. and some videos get quite long tbh.
Fun fact: Ferris was born in my hometown of Galesburg, Illinois. Ferris Street was named for him.
Since this channel got over 100,000 subscribers, you guys are getting a silver playbutton; what about a video related to bronze, silver, and gold medals?
In German it's called just "Riesenrad" which means gigantic/jumbo wheel :)
In dutch it is just, giant wheel (or radiant to be more precise)
quality content 👍👍👍👍
Topic suggestion
Subways when and where?
why didn't you include a Farris Buller bonus fact?
Ferris is a tall rotating non structural building, and also the first man to invent one is George Washington Gale Ferris Jr (in honor its named after him)and wheel is because it looks and spins like a wheel
One small correction. Asbury Park has no 'h'. It rhymes with raspberry.
i allways ride those at amusement parks :)
same provide a great lay of the land
When you realize that nothing wrong with his head, he just picked the wrong glasses!
The London Eye can only carry 800 people and it's almost twice as big.
Bueller... Bueller... Bueller...
Why not Zoidberg?
I thought they were named by Ferris Buller on his day off!
0:28 Cheech Marin?
Well something happened, 104k subscribers, nice jump. CONGRATS!
Silver play button down, gold and diamond to go.
It's been a weird week that's for sure. ;-)
am i the only one that calls sub sandwiches, hoagies, etc., grinders
"Genius steals"
Dear Today I Found Out channel,
Could you upload audio version of your videos somewhere? My PC is too slow to play vids.
Cheers,
Me.
YTD
So what if I build a jacuzzi into a Farris wheel? It would have the most generic name as Ferris jaccuzzi wheel.
do you take ideas/suggestions? I've always wondered why unidentified individuals are called John/Jane Doe.
Ferris wheels get their names from the name of the Inventor Alexander Graham Ferris right?
In Spanish they call it "noria" ... idk the reason
Is your glasses blue or green??
The sides of your glasses disappear a lot . . .
Here in India, we call them Giant Wheels.
why DO you call that a ferris wheel?
im Germany they are called "Riesenrad" (giant-wheel)
Nothing to do with Ferris Bueller's Day Off?
How about this: Lyman Ward and Cindy Pickett, better known as Mr. and Mrs. Bueller on Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, first met on the set of that film and subsequently got married in 1986. Like in the movie, they had two children, a boy and a girl; unfortunately, they did not name them Ferris and Jeanie, but rather Shane and Miranda.
How cool is that... ?
Hey there is another channel for you
The "How Cool Is That" Channel
I swear it looks like the reflective sides of your glasses are just parts of your head were cut off because of the green screen.
A Random Guy You just completely ruined it for me
Kaleb Bruwer
:P
Today I found out nothing
Am I the only idiot who only just realised that it isn't called a _ferrous_ wheel?
I remeber last week they had 60k
It's been a crazy week :-)
"Azzz-Bury Park" not "ash-bury"
100k!
:-)
*Istanbul, not Constantinople.
hey Simon I'm a huge fan and I was jw how feasible is it for you guys to take back the independence of the United States for the next four to eight years?
Bear in mind that no one calls them Ferris wheels outside of the USA.
Because they look like wheels.
What a silly question.
It's entirely too hard to press thumbs up on all your videos...How does it help you out?
subs: now it's getting eerie...
It's gone from ludicrous mode to plaid. ;-)
Prediction: 1 Million in 3 months. They already can produce both buttons.
To be honest, TIFO is much better than toptenz.
"1 Million in 3 months." **cowers in corner**... ;-) But seriously that would be awesome. A lot of improvements Simon and I could afford to make to these videos with that kind of active user base. :-)
And thanks for the compliment! I like TIFO better too, but am a bit biased obviously. ;-) The real question here is which does Simon like better? :-)
Is this really the question? He's the sole presenter of Toptenz and one of two on TIFO. So you're better off anyway. I think TiFO's strength is its content. Toptenz is Simon.
2.5 million ridden it? so only half as many as your mom
50 foot???????
But an up for the metrics later on in the vid!
50 retards are about 15 meters
early
