Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Trail

  • Five years after the devastation cause by Storm Desmond to the 3 mile (5km) Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Trail, the improved route was reopened with a £7.9M funding package in December 2020. This also saw the reopening of the Bobbin Mill tunnel, allowing you to walk under the A66. We parked at the Keswick Leisure Centre, which is the beginning of the walk and walked along the old railway line, which used to run all the way to Penrith. The line has now been replaced by a nice flat, tarmacked path all the way to Threlkeld, which is perfect for families, wheelchairs, people on bikes and joggers. Once at Threlkeld, you have the option of tea and cake at the café or a pint and a meal at the local pub, before deciding to either walk back the same way or take the hourly bus back to Keswick.

I love railway walks. There was a line from Winchester to Alton in Hampshire. Part of it has been turned into a trail from Kingsworthy to New Alresford.. and the rest has been preserved and turned into a heritage steam railway for tourists called the Watercress Line. It was so named as it mainly used to carry watercress to the busy London hotels. This Keswick trail is full of surprises.. love the tunnel !! Imagine the amout of work that went into building that original line ! Cheers Alan bro !
I hope Mrs. Metalman's eye gets well soon !

Great to see this fabulous path that appeals to such a wide variety of walkers , also nice and flat so ideal for anyone with wheels ... personally it's great to see any path that accomodates wheel chairs but also good for pushchairs & cyclists and this I believe is the route for the local parkrun. You have shown it's benefits perfectly with great views of the river, a choice of coffee shop or pub at the end plus bonus of bus back if desired. Brilliant video to show the lake district isn't just about the high fells but something for everyone. Well done, another fab watch 😊

I’ve always been a bit sceptical about “manicured” trails in the Lake District, but this looks wonderful. And I really don’t see how even the most die-hard fell walker could really complain about it!
You suggested it to me when we met on Little Mel, as something my Mrs with her arthritic knee might cope with, and I think you’re right! Really useful video, and really well done, as ever.
We were up there again this weekend, but shopping for property north of the National Park. With a bit of luck we’ll be living 20 minutes from Keswick by the end of the year!

I'm back again Alan and I really liked the look of this. We love old railway line walks and this must have been so beautiful to get the train along here at that time. Gorgeous place, and that bobbin mill tunnel was lovely that they reopened in 2020 . Its great that they have benches and information boards along the path too. The little waterfall was lovely and those wooden wigwams were in a stunning spot, would definitely like to stay there and the village where the coffee shop was looked so pretty Hope Mrs Ms eye is better now, that was beautiful :) ~ Anna

Love this section Alan. We have walked a large part of it dozens of times as a route to get from Bed and Breakfasts at the top of the hill down into Keswick centre. Its nice to see it is now fully repaired as a large section was destroyed in the floods a few years back. The signage looks greatly improved too. Its our preferred route when doing a nice gentle circular of Latrigg. Park for free by the Spar Garage on the road going into Keswick, pick up the railway line behind the Garage and walking towards Threkeld and climbing the Eastern Slope of Latrigg, drop down the Western slope to the Railway Station, Leisure Centre where you parked and then back to the car. Hope Mrs Metalmans eye infection is ok now, the rain didn’t dampen your spirits, how was the coffee shop, we have never visited that?
