I'm just back from a sketching trip so your video caught my eye. You bring quite the assortment of pencils. I make due with one mechanical HB in .05 and a stick eraser. I also bring two fountain pens and a micron in sepia. Yet, each artist is different and feels comfortable with a different set of tools. I always enjoy seeing what others pack to sketch and paint on the go. Good luck with your future art and happy painting.

Great video!👏👏👏👏👏 Genius Father, pure genius!😍 I had too, drop everything, run to the garage and make a copy of your Father's Travel Art case/tripod/table thing!!! Hope he doesn't mind. Made mine from scrap wood, laying around. I literally bought an old tripod, a few months ago for my little Canon Camera...used it Once. So I didn't have to buy a THING. everything needed was in the garage...thanks to my husband😘 I am SO, SO HAPPY, with the idea/results. We travel, quite a bit for different things. I have all my Art essentials in a canvas bag, just the right size. Now, with this... I'm unstoppable 😁 Thank you, thank you, thank you...to You and your Genius Father.👍👍👍👍👍 Oh...I attached a cup holder, with wing nuts. The cup and hold attach and disconnect easily. Then fit into my Art Bag.😉
She is so organized! It’s like she goes on a journey all prepared. When I go out to draw, I’m so flustered as to what to bring and I can’t do easels. I admire those people with set-ups like hers!
Hello 👋 Thank you for sharing. You're a wonderful artist. You have good arts supplies. Your drawings are so beautiful 😍. Enjoy watching your beautiful pieces. I'm the inside person after watching your wonderful video, I need to step outside 😁. God bless 🙌
I'm very introverted, I never leave my house, and as an artist or a person who wants to become a professional artist I don't think that's good😅. Thank you for sharing, I've been thinking about going outside more and practicing realism, nature is so beautiful. Very grateful for your tips! Will definitely take notes❤️
I always loved your urban sketches .. I rewatched all the sketchbook tours multiple times and I always look for your urban sketches and They are always motivational… I wish there would be more of these Urban sketching ♥️
Oh wow that’s a great setup for Plein Air painting. I love how your pencil case is organized & I both of your travel brush sets. Thanks for sharing this inspirational video to help me with figuring out my Plein Air setup.
Love this one! The one think I haven't tried - sketch on location. Interruption & lack of bravery have prevented me - but, you make me want to attempt it 👏 Thank you for sharing this!!!
I've tested the 2h pencil for my water color sketches and I've been really enjoying it! It doesn't smudge the paper or makes really dark marks, so is great when you have a heavy hand for drawing
This is SO GOOD! Loved it! You and you dad are both very creative and innovative. Love the easel table attachment that you both created. Thank you so much for sharing this.
I am determined to get out again and create on the go...I used to do paintings and murals outside with acrylics and the weather sometimes created havoc. This seems like a much more organized and approachable way to create. Thanks for sharing.
Hi. Thanks for a great tutorial. Also I’m wondering if I would be able to buy one of those 3-D things your dad made for you. It looks better than anything else I’ve seen in a long time and nice and simple.
I need to pack a little smaller. Something that I don't regret having carried around if I don't end up painting. I have a modified Cotman travel sketch bag that fits everything, a small palette in cigar tin, 1 travel brush and 2 water brushes, a Sakura gelly roll white pen, the same 0.3 Pigma micron that you have, a sepia Pitt artist pen size S Staedler Mars micro 0.5 mechanical pencil and a Staedler Mars technico 2mm lead pencil, a Kohi Noor pencil eraser, a small altoid tin that fits a kneadable eraser. a plastic eraser and a sharpener, a ruler, clamps, small scissors, extra mini ceramic palette, plastic hand cream box for water (it has a lid in case you are in a place where you can't get rid of the water where you paint), paper strips for color swatches, an ex sleeve from one of my kids that I use as a rag.
Amazing! Thanks! I saw the small altoid tin box and have to get that for little things to put in because I dont like searching for them when I am out painting or drawing. But thank you for your awesome comment!
I'm actually able to watch early for once. Such a fun and inspirational video. I try to do outside art, but find it hard to do as I don't like people watching me. But love your set up, thanks for giving us a peak!
That's exactly my problem, although I do occasionally go in a quiet or private spot or just on my balcony. I love being able ro paint outside innthe summer. This vacation I wasn't able to paint much because there were other people staying in the same location as we did, so it was hard to find some privacy. The ones who are not into art don't always understand the process, so if you are not a great artist to amaze them like Jess here, they tend to have a strange attitude. I prefer not to have to explain why my leaves are blue and so on.
Hi Jess, loved this video! I like to take a clear alcohol marker with me as well, because it creates nice gradients and subtle shading if you use it on top of biro. Works especially well with purple ink! Also love the Koh-i-Nor dual-ended red and blue coloured pencil for sketching and duo tone illustrations, a tiny Bic dip pen for really thin lines, some lovely slim scissors from Muji, and good old washi tape.
The fuumuui travel kit and collapsible shot glass are soooooo cute...🥰 Jess, please use these cute travel supplies of yours to fill your sketchbook completely and give us a sketchbook tour soon.😊 Waiting in anticipation 💙💜💙💜
Hey Jess, your sketchbook platform for tripod mount is totally awesome!!! The rest is pretty cool, too: magnets, collapsible shot glass doing double duty (brilliant!), multicolor ballpoint pen (another blast from the past - or should I say classic?), backpack and organization system. The compact brushes remind me of the lip brushes I used to carry in high school in the 80s. Fantastic video! Much love.
Fantastic comprehensive ideas of what essentials are required. It takes me the longest time to decide and pack and repack my stuff. Half of it I don't end up using. I think it pack it for comfort lol. Just in case I might need it. You're super organised. How cool and nifty is your dad btw. I'm enjoying your content so much. Thanks. Rachelle, Australia 🦘
Hullo Jess, I enjoyed watching this traveling art supplies video! I know some other traveling artists that like W&N compact watercolor palette, most every one switch out the cotman paints for their professional choice of paints! I was surprised that so many of them and others have changed to The Portable Palette, and they have just released even more options for pans! I hope you have a chance to check one out! I am also a fan of The Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils! I have even used them without water! I commend your choices and I have been enjoying watching your videos, yep new subscriber so I will say keep going! I believe that you are on the right track and your future looks bright!
I am thinking of starting to draw with a fountain pen, and after a long research, Lamy Safary turns out to be very popular among artists. My question is to you, what size of nib do you use? I am between Fine and Medium. And what kind of ink you use for your pen? Is it waterproof? If yes, can you name the brand?
Thanks for this, it was very informative. I've been thinking of purchasing a Winsor and Newton watercolour field box set and know that it comes with a few colours I wouldn't use. I would be really interested in knowing what 14 pigments you chose to put into the box set? I've just subscribed to your channel. Thanks again 🙂
Great supply list! The shot glass is a cool idea! And those easels are awesome! Did your dad upload the print plans for it? Looks very nice. Speaking of Muji pens you’d probably love their fountain pen. It’s my fav right now for urban sketching.

I also have some cheaper Schneider Easy Fountain Pens (which I love and they’re only NZD $5 ea!) filled with the same ink so I wouldn’t even care much if they got ruined, they’re super cheap to replace... or buy some Platinum Preppies! Just use them, it’s fine! 😋 Also you can refill your “disposable” micron/fineliner pens when they’re dry with Indian Ink which is waterproof and pretty darn cheap as well (just use pliers to pull the nib and use a blunt needle to refill, easy peasy!) ....and if they did ever clog up it’s no biggie because you were just going to throw them away anyway ... but now you can get heaps of use out of the same pens and not waste money buying new ones. Basically.... I did lots of research for months because I was scared too and I read ALLL the blogs about how you shouldn’t do this and that with your fountain pens .... but in the end I just decided to go for it as I saw just as many urban sketchers did too (like Liz Steel, Teoh, etc) a nd it’s worked out perfectly fine... it’s just the FP purists way of scaring you... but then again I wouldn’t do it in a pen worth 100’s or 1000’s.....but then Again, I would never buy a pen worth that much either haha! Don’t be scared ... the only waste of art tools are the ones you don’t use! 🤗🤗🤗
I use carbon ink! Haven’t had an issue. How often do you use the pen? Usually Get clogged when dry and running under water carefully sometimes helps- and Thanks :)
I used sketch ink and it clogged right away. Im using Waterman ink right now and it flows beautifully but it's not waterproof. Thanks for the info though I'll look into it! 🤘🎨🤘

It is actually pretty fun using only one medium cause It doesn't stress me to do anything good.
Erasers can be used to add highlights when shading.
