Sharing this video with our patrons started an interesting conversation about whether it's appropriate or not to use certain kinds of make-up. We learned that a lot of Viking inspired make-up designs actually come from other cultures such as Native American populations, Inuit and Maori. Some people find the use of this kinds of make-up offensive or disrespectful, if made by people outside of the original culture.
Our intent was clearly not to mock anyone nor to make something historically accurate, we just wanted to create an aesthetically impactful video.
Lots of love to everyone.
- Dave and Joe
Imo your intentions are pretty obvious, some people just want to find a reason to be offended so they can feel like they're a more moral person than you. What do you think the chances are that there was even one actual native American/Inuit or Maori was amongst those "offended"?
I've always found the discussion around "cultural appropriation" to be extremely pretentious.
culture is meant to be shared and remixed, why else do genre change covers haha
Please stop apologizing to the perpetually-offended garbage people that would actually complain about something like this. You're giving them power by even acknowledging their opinions as remotely valid.
😬
This song sounds as though the Emptiness Machine is another name for an unloaded trebuchet.
That’s pretty good mate, cheers.
Don't worry about the makeup. If anyone's watched any of your videos, the impression you give is always lighthearted, fun yet sincere.
It's clear you love music, community and culture... As far as this song goes I'm impressed with the speed with which you came out with it. Great job, and as always, thank you 😀
The fact they felt they had to put that intro, it's really sad.
I've read it thinking it was something serious. Usually when music video starts with a black screen and text, it's because someone died.
I love these folk covers.
Italian Viking Linkin Park … things you never knew you needed, am I right?
Vicking Park
Agreed:-). This concept should be adapted into a movie, like, yesterday.
That is a masterpiece!
keep on rockin, y'all!
Quite excellent! Having Michalina join with her Hurdy Gurdy would've made it even better!
fr man hurdy gurdy is like the most unlikely way to elevate a song every time, i love that buzzy banjo sound
The cover I was waiting for 🖤🖤🖤 a sublime and spectacular job as always 🔥🔥🔥 SKÅL! 🍻
I love these covers!! The percussion in folk inspired covers is deeper and it adds transcendence to the song
Also i love flutes
Much love!!
Epic is indeed the right adjective for this
It's amazing, guys!
It's awesome ❤❤❤
And added to my playlist 😊
The chord progressions sound so good in folk song, I wonder how great a bardcore remake would be 😮
I found it weird how many people fail to realize that culture is supposed to be shared among people and if a culture isn't exposed to new people, said culture will eventually die.
Well done bros 💕💕
Very good 😮
Okay now I want a linkin park epic-folk band that covers all the songs and tour all around Europe.
Thanks.
good stuff, goes hard, rock on
THIS IS SO COOL, great great great cover. Super epic and definitely another version that is welcome in my bangers playlist.

YOU'RE AMAZING!
Fantastici❤
Vikings were one of the greatest forces of cultural mixing in history. If you saw it in Norse culture, you'd probably also see it in cultures like the Inuit and Maori, because the Norse collected and shared traditions from those tribes. Humans share things and ideas. It's a simple fact of humanity. This is nothing but beautiful and fun.
Por fin un cover de calidad para esta grandiosa canción
I honestly prefere Greta's voi to Emily. Her tone has just a lot of character! good job Greta, grandissima!

A bunch of "anti-cultural appropriation" comments, so thought I'd give a hopefully nuanced opinion on the subject. Can the people shouting "cultural appropriation" be taking it too far, and be more interested in virtue signalling? Absolutely. If someone gets mad at a white person eating sushi, or something dumb like that, they probably need to reassess their priorities. But there are absolutely aspects of culture that aren't meant to be shared, and it would be offensive if you lazily adopted them for aesthetic reasons. It's hard to give an example of western culture being adopted in a "bad" way, but as an imperfect example, if someone who knew nothing about Christianity saw some images about Jesus getting executed and thought it looked cool, so used that aesthetic for a dance party video, you'd probably offend someone, and I'd say, deservingly so. Now you can always say, "who cares if people are offended?" And that's valid. But if your intention is to not offend, and you do something that's easily construed as offensive, then people are going to call you out.
The Jesus dying example isn't great, because Christianity has historically been an oppressor. Lazily adopting the aesthetic of sacred things from cultures that are historically oppressed is worse because colonizers explicitly decided those cultural traditions were completely worthless and stopped them, often using a gun. These cultural elements are still usually devalued, and it's not particularly hard to find people in power saying things like, "People who don't adopt my customs are going to be punished for eternity," and at best, the people in power probably think of the culture as a silly, historical novelty. So if other people, who know nothing about your culture and don't particularly care about it, come in and say, "That looks cool, I'm going to dress like that! Not going to do any research though to get it right," you'd probably be upset. Again, you can say, "who cares if people are upset?" But if you don't want to offend people, don't do offensive things. As an aside, this isn't necessarily an anti-western thing. As an example, if you're Chinese, you probably shouldn't lazily adopt the aesthetic of Tibetan ceremonies.
These thoughts aren't necessarily relevant to this video here - I don't know anything about the cultures these makeup styles were taken from. If these makeup traditions are completely mundane, and the people from these cultures are happy about others adopting them, then MelodickaBros did nothing wrong. On the other hand, if these makeup styles were explicitly reserved for important ceremonies, and it would be offensive within the culture to adopt them solely to be stylish, then yeah, this video would be offensive. Either way, I think it's clear MelodickaBros had good intentions, and the worst thing you can accuse them of is ignorance.
TL;DR: feel free to adopt the elements of culture that people within that culture want you to adopt. You probably shouldn't adopt things from cultures that are reserved for sacred occasions, especially if you don't care about the sacred occasion in the slightest and only like the aesthetic. Also be mindful of adopting cultural aspects if your ancestors traditionally banned those traditions and forced their own culture instead. It's a bad look. If you really want to appropriate, go ahead, but if you don't want to be offensive, then don't be offensive.
Just to add another thing to consider when criticizing the use of culture: genuine coincidence. The fact is there's a lot of similarities between base human abilities an experiences, so it's not hard or uncommon for people of different cultures to do similar things for unrelated reasons.
That's the first good take on this topic I saw on the internet THANK YOU
