    thank you so much for your work. I was interested in learning and got back into chess. The main difference was that i can't read kanji and its hard to read shogi related articles and know who can actually give good advice. Seeing and getting the reasoning behind some things.
    Im very happy i stumbled onto your channel. Hopefully will be able to learn more about it and enjoy it more.
    Also im curious. after you learn more and the rules (me). Do you think we should study more end game moves?Or maybe more middle game. As shogi can be rather long if the players don't make any progress and are too persistent... Opening is brief but it can be quite the long game at times.
    I'll keep watching your videos and maybe in 4 months will have better questions

    • @ShogiHarbour
      @ShogiHarbour  Год назад +2

      Thanks you so much for your kind words!At first.. Practically speaking you will need little of everything. You cannot lose immediately in the opening, nor blunder in the middlegame. If you manage to survive to endgame, understanding how to win the game, how to checkmate will be most crucial as it will directly influence game outcome. So in later stages of learning endgame should be your focus.

    after years and years of cheating to get thru shogi in the Yakuza series, I actually tried to play for real and now it's got its hooks in me. But it's still so frustrating. it's so easy to get into a stalemate.
    attempting to figure it out myself with no instruction is really fun (it's a lot like solving a puzzle) like I figured out the defense you showcase here on my own. but i quickly get to a point where i'm like "wtf do I do now?", anyway I got to the 6th kyu ai and it seems I've hit a wall.

      @ShogiHarbour what really strikes me is that in chess, the bishops are always on their respective diagonals and never change them until the end of the game. But here, the fact that a bishop can be captured and then placed back to white squares, although the opponent has already one in the white squares, is just so unusual. The promotion system to the third before last rank in the opponent's territory, the generals that act almost like the king and the pieces that can be put back at any place. All those elements genuinely make shogi 100 times harder than chess, and I am scared of imagining the amount of calculations needed at a pro level

    • @ShogiHarbour
      @ShogiHarbour  Год назад +1

      Let me add that promoted bishop can change diagonals too.... haha and pawn forward capture is confusing for chess players!

    • @genekisayan6564
      @genekisayan6564 Год назад

      @@ShogiHarbour As a grandmaster said once, pawns are the soul of chess. The fact that they capture diogonaly allows them to support each other, and either force the players to be in closed positions or open up everything. Which completely changes the dynamics of shogi as I feel that everything is much more linear with front pawn captures and the lances.

    • @ShogiHarbour
      @ShogiHarbour  Год назад

      @genekisayan6564 yeah and you have new tactics like sacrificing a pawn and dropping behind... no positional play I'd say

    At 1:42 why does Sente have to take Gote's rook pawn? Can't they do exactly what you said and drop a pawn to attack the bishop immediately? Then they would be faster right?

    • @ShogiHarbour
      @ShogiHarbour  Год назад

      They don't have a pawn in hand at that point? They can of course go back and defend bishop's head instead.
