  • When I was first decluttering, I wanted a list of exactly what I should have:
    ➡️ How many place settings?
    ➡️ How many mixing bowls?
    ➡️ Do I need 2 rubber scrapers?
➡️What about pots and pans? 2-quart, 5-quart? What’s the best?
Unfortunately, I can’t give you an exact list of what you should keep in your kitchen because my cooking habits will look completely different than yours. As it should!
Let's talk about how to figure out exactly what YOU need in your kitchen.
Crumpet Recipe I used (I doubled it):

Yay! Finally someone who is as excited about crumpets as I am. What a fantastic idea to use the "cookie cutters"! I used to hoard old tuna cans so I could use them as the rings. TFS your company by inviting us in and for sharing the recipe for those delicious looking crumpets - (you even got the "holes" to work out! Congratulations!!!

II have been decluttering like crazy. Last night I tried to stand on a chair to get into the cabinet over the frig. I fell and ended up in the ER because I thought I had broken some ribs. Turns out I am badly bruised. Just wanted to mention this because, in my zeal, I learned a hard lesson, to be more careful. Decluttering is gratifying, but it became painful for me. Please be careful everyone.

I have decluttered my kitchen to the point where only if something is worn out or broken, do I need to let it go now. It truly makes me so happy to cook in my kitchen, and the cabinets are not crowded. The one specialty appliance I will not declutter is my rice cooker, which I use several times a week... I am horrid at cooking it on my stove top 😊

Your kitchen recommendations are true in our kitchen as well. As you say, everyone can find the best process for their life style. Most of us don’t look forward dealing with the dirty dishes after eating. It is welcoming to enter our kitchen with it ready to prepare our food and not have a enormous stack of dirty items yelling at us. Always enjoy your elephant art over the door. It makes me smile!

    Rachel, really nice helpful talk.
There are two adults cooking here, so we need a different variety of knives, etc.
Washing dishes as you go is key for me. And I really enjoy doing dishes after every meal. We don't have an electric dishwasher. It works for us.
    Cheers

Me too! Our dishwasher stopped working right after we bought our house, about 30 years ago lol. I've never understood why people wash the dishes without soap, then put them in the dishwasher. Add a bit of soap to the sponge & done; there's no need to run a machine to wash them again. Simplify :)
I've been handwashing everything since, but it sure has been easier with decluttering, and Rachel's calm & logical approach is SO helpful.

We decluttered before we moved to an apartment in a senior living facility, but I need to do it again. One delicious restaurant meal per day is included in our rent. I thought I would want to cook occasionally, but I find myself only cooking Sunday breakfast and batches of meat for sandwiches! We didn't bring much but need even less. There are so many things I thought I would use that I haven't touched since we arrived. One tech suggestion: You have such a lovely, soft voice, but it's hard to hear. Could you boost the sound a bit, please? Those who don't need it could lower their volume, but my volume is at its max.

I really struggle with aspirational Hilary in this category. Technically, based on your questions in my life today I would probably keep 10% of what I have. I’m 1 person who rarely (ok, never) entertains anymore and admittedly don’t cook much (eating cereal for dinner as I watch this 😂). I have a fairly large house and kitchen and don’t even use all the storage but still have aspirational things that need to go. I’m close to retirement and if I still don’t use stuff when I have more time, it’s definitely going. P.S. The crumpets looked amazing - I enjoy baking but never do anymore because I don’t want to eat the stuff myself and don’t have people to take it too anymore.

All my pots, pans, fridge boxes, and suchlike now easily fit onto the large shelf under my sink! And I no longer have to pull out a load of things to get to the thing I need to use 😁
I utterly love crumpets! But it's so easy to get good ones in the supermarkets in England, that I have only ever made them once from scratch, about 30 years ago 😉

I rarely use my 9 x 13” pan and my 11 x 7” pan but when I have them, I’m very glad to have them. So I’m going to keep them
But it’s tempting to let one of them go.

We use a dishwasher so we need more dishes, glasses, coffee cups, and silverware. I now use Corelle plates because they are lightweight, take up less room, and chip much less than stoneware. I don't mind having more dishes because I love just placing them in the dishwasher as I go through the day. My landlord likes the dishwasher because it uses less water. I do pots and pans and baking dishes by hand, so I use the washer every 2 days.
Otherwise, I have a minimal amount of things in my kitchen because it is
so tiny. We all do what works for us.

Do people really not have an awareness of what they do and don't use in the kitchen? I can't imagine going through all the trouble of boxing everything up (even stuff I know that I use) or making an inventory list and tracking daily usage over the course of a month or whatever. Nothing against your ideas Rachel... if people are oblivious to their reality and need to try one of those options to see the hard facts, then I truly feel for them and how hard the decluttering process is going to be for them. I did very well with decluttering by using the onion method but I'm lucky to have no issues with a fantasy self that cooks elaborate meals or bakes. I think that method could work well for anyone though. The first layer that you might peel away are things that should really be trashed like broken, chipped, rusty, flaking items that could actually be dangerous to use. Next, you could look for items that you never use and things you dislike using and get them out. Then, you could get into the details about how many coffee mugs you actually need and that sort of thing. You made an excellent point about the importance of washing the dishes every day. If everything fits in the kitchen, decluttering isn't as urgent as establishing that good daily habit.
