Hi adam. You have no idea how much you have helped me ,so far. So we can use both whereas and but between " He likes pizza" and "she likes hamburger". When using "whereas" we are considering differences between two people ,but when using "but" we are comparing their likes. However , I think I have got it wrong because in this case they can always be replaced with each other.
Hello professor Adams : Thank you for teaching me . You are wonderful teacher , you should be , in Holywood movies . I am a voice expert , and your voice is very charismatic . Thank you very much .
Hi Adam, Thanks for this amazing staff. Can we use "whereas" as a conjunction between two different views each of them is represented in a different paragraph? In other words, to use it in a manner like "On the other hand" at the beginning of a new paragraph? Sincerely, Ahmad,
Hi Adam, With the coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) I have been taught that they link two or more independent clauses using a comma before the conjunctive. For example, Paul works too much every day to make extra money, but he does not save enough. Here, it is mentioned that we may use a semicolon before the conjunctive. For instance, Paul works too much to make extra money; but, he does not save enough. Here, the semicolon and comma are used in the same manner as we use them with linking words, like however, nevertheless, and still. So, could the coordinating conjunctions be treated in the same way like linking words? Thanks in advance,
Thanks very much for the clip. I have a question. I see the word "still" used often with these contrasting words to add more emphasis, such as here: "The building was put up by a respected developer, though/but/yet the government watchdog still condemned it shortly after it was put into exploitation". Is still relevant here? Or should I take it out? Thanks once more
I have a confusion. I have noticed mostly people don't use commas while using Although/though/whereas when subordinate clause follows Main Clause..Grace is an excellent athlete although/ though she injured her leg recently.(example from Cambridge Dit)...Is this possible?? Similarly, In oxford dictionary........ although / even though / though You can use these words to show contrast between two clauses or two sentences. Though is used more in spoken than in written English. You can use although, even though and though at the beginning of a sentence or clause that has a verb. Notice where the comma goes: Although/Even though/Though everyone played well, we lost the game. We lost the game although/even though/though everyone played well.
Hello, Sir. Can you please explain to me why you separated a subordinate clause with comma: " Capitalism favours free market, although it does recognize that......" ?
We should not start a sentence with and or but, either.... I get this cos I had to advice my students on logical thinking, too. Even though already expresses the cause. But is wrong in this context. Etc. Thanks!!!!
hi my favorite teacher. I hope you are doing well. to understand what you are teaching us better, please use simple examples. Although I spent a lot of time focusing on your lessens about contrast function, I do have difficulty to grasp them. in other words, despite a great deal of effort, there is still an ambiguity in the contrast lessen. it is needless to say that It is my weakness and you have been a super powerful teacher in the writing skills.
well, I need to score big however I have some problems in integrated essay as well as I live in U.S I talk with my American friends all the, we understand each other all the time, however when I take toefl listening practice test, I can't answer the questions. I understand the whole lecture or conversationI just can't take notes. please help me with this part of toefl test.
Amanullah Zamani hi. i got the same thing. I can talk like a native American speaker however, when it comes down to write, it doesn't work the way i expect. it sucks. 😈
You're wowwwwwwwwww. I have a question. For the TOEFL exam, if I say: While/Although some people prefer to live in the countryside, I prefer living in the city. Should I use it while/whereas or although? Thanks!!
Hi Adam, I would like to ask you if you could explain “Readers response” what exactly means that?, and what I have to do?I’m taking ENGL101. My teacher gave me a reading Black Men and Public Space _Brent Staples and ask me to do readers respond, so I’m lost because I never done this before. I’ll appreciate if you can explain me this. Thanks
It is easy to find out others videos explaining the same topic. However, after spending a considerable amount of time watching them, I drew the conclusion that Adam provides us with the most insightful explanations. However, I must say: he should better organize the way the texts are shown in his "slides". Most of them are quite confusing.
Even though some contrasting techniques are not easy to handle, they are represented in this video in a very easy-to-understand manner. While the video helps a lot to learn how to use contrast conjunctions, the intensive extra self-practice is still necessary; yet, after watching this video writing contrasting essays appears to be more interesting to master. Whereas comments simply thanking the author are welcome, it is deemed that more words from the presented material should be practiced. Although that thanking comment show listeners' understanding of the learned material still it could use more words from this video.
Mr. Skype was quite efficient at this. It is good to analyse what is expected. I can manage more than my situation seems like. I wish the op. Thanks. I was an A-student. This has more to do with logical n conclusive thinking skills . Grammar no less.
Hi Adam, how are you? In other video of yours, you mentioned a dictionary online, like app, that is good because you can listing how to pronounce and something else. I move to Canada, and I want to improve my english. May you indicate an online dictionary for me, please? Thank you for your videos, I really like it.
This is pretty good .I will be back💭✅🍀... your explanation should be more concise in that i do get muddled up. Going back n forth.Leaving out some helps.
Hi. Thanks for ur great teaching. As u mentioned,"Whereas is just to contrast 2 different things." How about this sentence : "We usually consider it healthy to eat lots of fruit, whereas too much can produce an excess of acid in the stomach." * I think in this sentence we are contrasting 2aspects of a single thing, so we have to use although or but* Could u please answer me ?
I have a comment on the example sentence: "The test results proved negative, even though the doctors prescribed an intensive diet regimen for Jim". I assume the desired meaning of this sentence is that Jim had had some health issues because of which the doctors prescribed him a diet, and that diet didn't help. But the results of the test, in this case, should be positive, not negative, i.e. the cholesterol is still above some level, etc. Otherwise, if we want to use "even though", the sentence should be something like " The test results proved negative, even though Jim didn't follow the diet the doctors prescribed him". Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Hi Adam, another useful lesson. I have a question about last sentence, it would be correct if we put EVEN THOUGH where but is? (sales went up, even though we did not move any more product than usual.)
Oh my God! This is really advanced for me but I will insist on re watching the video again and again so as to try to comprehend how to use these words in my everyday communications. I like how your English sounds. It's geat!
Hi Adam This is an absolutely great lesson. Can you please let me know the source for this information? Which grammar book can I refer to to read and learn more about this topic? Thank you very much!
in the minute 20:29, in the last sentence, I noticed that you used a comma before " but not the experience" I have understood that you are not supposed to do that unless there is an independent clause after but. Can you please clarify?
Hi, Adam! I don't know which conjunction to use in the sentence below: "It is fair to conclude that benefits of private schools overcome their disadvantages; although/whereas/while ? the private schools address to rich population due to their costs and their high fees do not always promise certified teachers, private institutions offer an individual tailored system and better professional opportunities in the future thanks to their international connection network."

What a great lesson by Adam. Those 32 people disliked it are the real stupid. No offense!
Hi. Could you please explain if I need to use comma after although and whereas? Sometimes it's there, sometimes it isn't. Confusing. Thank you.
One of the best lessons in contrasting I ever watched on RUclips ! how come I always use although for showing contrast between two different things !
Thanks very much for the clip. I have a question. I see the word "still" used often with these contrasting words to add more emphasis, such as here: "The building was put up by a respected developer, though/but/yet the government watchdog still condemned it shortly after it was put into exploitation". informative
why do we use comma for the first sentence even the sentence begins without although
Sir if we use although in middle then comma will be used before although
Thank you so much Adam, however the sound is very quiet.

Hi, Adam! I don't know which conjunction to use in the sentence below:
"It is fair to conclude that benefits of private schools overcome their disadvantages; although/whereas/while ? the private schools address to rich population due to their costs and their high fees do not always promise certified teachers, private institutions offer an individual tailored system and better professional opportunities in the future thanks to their international connection network."
